Soctob X Treme sports November X-TREME Vol.3, No. 1 Lafayette Elementary School, Washington DC, 20015 BIG Changes for Miami Heat by Caleb Murphy, 5B and Quinn Wright, 5J The Miami Heat changed a lot over the summer with the addition of LeBron ‘King James’ James, Chris Bosh, and Mike Miller. These are the Heats’ new key players. They also picked up Zydrunas Ilgauskus who used to play on the Cavs with James. LeBron James, Bosh, and Dwyane Wade are supposedly the great amigos, but some disagree. They say that it’s D-Wade’s town so James and Bosh should leave. Though in all of NBA, they’re not the only Big 3. Boston has Pierce, Allen, and K-G, and now New teammates Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, they have Shaq. Also Kobe Bryant in L.A is and LeBron James (from left to right) saying that he’s going to win it all this year. The Heats first game this year was a very disappointing loss to the Boston Celtics. Tryouts were held in the gym. Coaches Robert Johnson and Lauren Shapiro watched the players do drills and run laps before announcing the boys and girls teams. The names of players are on blue and gold banners in the Great Hall. I interviewed Coach Shapiro about Lafayette’s basketball program. I asked her what qualities they were looking for in a player. She said that she and Coach Johnson want a player who listens, takes direction, hustles, shows good sportsmanship and leadership. Ms. Shapiro and Mr. Johnson have been coaching basketball here for seven years which is as long as Coach Shapiro Lafayette has had a team, so they know what they’re looking. Basketball practices are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Girls’ games are on Tuesdays and boys’ games are on Thursdays. I hope you can see our games. Coach Johnson Go Bears! • New York Giants 2012 Season Recap 2012 New York Giants
NEW YORK GIANTS 2012 SEASON RECAP The 2012 Giants finished 9-7 and in second place in the NFC East. It was the eighth consecutive season in which the Giants finished .500 or better, their longest such streak since they played 10 seasons in a row without a losing record from 1954-63. The Giants finished with a winning record for the third consecutive season, the first time they had done that since 1988-90 (when they were 10-6, 12-4, 13-3). Despite extending those streaks, they did not earn a postseason berth. The Giants lost control of their playoff destiny with back-to-back late-season defeats in Atlanta and Baltimore. They routed Philadelphia in their finale, but soon learned they were eliminated when Chicago beat Detroit. The Giants compiled numerous impressive statistics in 2012. They scored 429 points, the second-highest total in franchise history; the 1963 Giants scored 448. The 2012 season was the fifth in the 88-year history of the franchise in which the Giants scored more than 400 points. The Giants scored a franchise- record 278 points at home, shattering the old mark of 248, set in 2007. In their last three home games – victories over Green Bay, New Orleans and Philadelphia – the Giants scored 38, 52 and 42 points. The 2012 team allowed an NFL-low 20 sacks. The Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35, four more than they had in 2011) and turnover differential (plus-14, a significant improvement over 2011’s plus-7). The plus-14 was the Giants’ best turnover differential since they were plus-25 in 1997.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

By Joe Kaiser ESPN Smith had a great 2011 -12, but he is an unrestricted free agent after this season. It took Danny Ferry exactly seven days in his new role as the Atlanta Hawks' president of basketball operations and general manager to completely change the face of the franchise. His ability to swiftly orchestrate separate deals to part with high-priced veterans Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams signaled a commitment to rebuilding and shed as much as $77 million still owed to the two veterans beyond next season. Fast-forward two-and-a-half months to today, and Ferry's rebuilt roster has only a handful of contracts that go beyond the 2012-13 season: • Al Horford : Signed through 2015-16. • Lou Williams : Signed through 2013-14. • John Jenkins : 2012 first-round pick. • Mike Scott : 2012 second-round pick. • Jeff Teague : Due to become a restricted free agent at season's end, barring an extension. Notice one big name we didn't mention: Josh Smith . The tantalizingly talented, yet often frustrating, forward is among the many Hawks entering the final year of their deals, and he represents arguably the biggest challenge for Ferry to date: what to do with Smith. If handled correctly, this could be the next step toward eventually turning the Hawks into a perennial playoff contender. Mishandled, and this could undo everything good that came out of the trades of Johnson and Williams. So the question is, what's the smarter move for Ferry and the Hawks? a) Negotiate an extension that will keep Smith in Atlanta for the long term.
