DEEK FOREST PARK HANDICAP WAS THE DECIDER It was not warm and sunny that Sunday at Stromlo Forest, it was “b…” hot! If you wanted to win a medal or a trophy for the year, or if you just wanted to finish the course before sunset, you were going to have to really sweat for it! Of course the weather was perfect for the spit roast lunch that was to follow. Vets came in good numbers (218) to celebrate the end of the monthly handicap year and talk was lively about who was going to win the yearly trophies. The pointscores in all three events were very close and there was great suspense. The course was tough and hilly for all three events and the winners really deserved their prizes. The Waddell Walking Series Walkers came in big numbers this month (27 against 22 last month). Maybe some of the runners decided it was too hot to run and settled for a walk. Dave Mackenzie got the gold medal, David Hall the silver (a consolation making up for his disqualification last month) and Peter Waddell, the creator of the event, received the bronze. Like last month the fastest walkers were John Stenhouse for the men in 25:13 and Monika Short for the women in 31:01. As regards the annual pointscore, things did not change after this walk with Dave Mackenzie consolidating his position with his win and won the trophy with 288 points. Andrina Norden managed to remain in second place with 279 points and John Stenhouse who was very close behind her also maintained his placing in third position with 266 points. Congratulations to all three. The Frylink Running Series 64 people took part in the run, which is 10 more than last month. (Continued from previous page) even hear too many complaints about that (apart from my own moans and groans). Anyway, the unwary starters were 127. The gold medallist was Judi Edwards in 52:10, a great time, especially after running in the Goulburn Fun Run the day before. Judi had won the gold before, in 1998, but was particularly pleased with this win, as she has had a lot of problems last winter due to viruses and sickness. She never really lost form though as she is a keen exerciser, at the gym three times a week and running up to 60km a week. She was glad though that she did not have to sprint at the end, as the gap behind her was enough to secure victory. Second was Tony Cavuoto in 42:53 and third Susan Archer in 50:35. Susan is in splendid form at the moment, second fastest woman in this handicap after Chris Pauling who ran in 48:05. The fastest man was Steve Bradford in 40:57. The final pointscore that was announced on the day was in fact wrong and had to be modified later giving Steve Bradford the top points from Christine Pauling and Steve Appleby. Although this was Annie Van Herck’s final handicap report, filling in for Jim O’Donnell over the last three months, hopefully she could be persuaded to continue particularly if there are heaps of accolades for her great efforts.

The men who got the medals in the Thomas Series included Garry Hand, Kevin O’Keeffe, Kent Williams, Peter Kallio, Steve Bradford, Mike Freer, Geoff Hawke and Bob Chapman. In the Waddell Series, Tanya Colyer, John Stenhouse, Kerry Boden, Dave Mackenzie, Carmen Carlon and Chris Mahe took the honours for consistency. Cathy Montalto and Geoff Moore picked up the coveted T-shirt, Cathy for 50 runs and Geoff has chalked up a hundred.
