3 WelcomeWelcome to the to November the September Edition of Thrussington of Thrussington Life Life So I would like to remind you all that the next edition, which will be in December, also includes January, so if you have any events that you want to advertise for the earlier part of the New Year, the December / January edition is the important one to use. The deadline for any submissions is the 22nd of November. I always have mixed feelings about November, it is an interesting month, not just because its is my birthday but of cause it has Remembrance Day and is also the start of the build up for Christmas. I see for Remembrance Day we are planning to Floodlight the Church in Red, something that with modern technology is relatively easy to do, we also have the original version of the film “All Quiet on the Western Front” being shown at the Village Hall on the 99 anniversary since the ending of the First World War. Many congratulations to Laura for raising over £2250 for a very worthwhile charity, I know I couldn't run a half marathon!!! Ed the Editor

Thank you From Laura

I would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone for supporting me on the run up to the Great Birmingham Half Marathon. The total for Birmingham Children's Hospital is currently at £2,258.00, smashing the original target by over 260%! I completed the race in 2 hours 10 minutes and the money raised really did spur me on during the last few miles which weren't easy. A fantastic achievement and it's wonderful to be able to give something back to the hospital that we will be forever grateful to.

9 SCHOOL NEWS

Dear Villagers, A belated welcome to the new academic year. I would like to begin by thanking those of you who have borne the brunt of the building works relating to the school since January. I am sure that you will be delighted with the restoration of peace and quiet. To have achieved a new building and a complete reconfiguration of the Victorian building in the space of seven months has been an incredible achievement. Keys were handed to me on the final Tuesday of the summer holiday, which meant that shelves, furniture, books equipment – everything that had had to be removed on the final day of the summer term to allow the demolition team to begin their work on the first Monday of the summer holiday - could be moved back in to the new building and preparation made for the occupation of some classrooms. The “moving in” process continues but the packed boxes are diminishing and the school is fully functioning. The biggest hits with the children have been a corridor (a feature completely unheard of hitherto), the toilets and the hand driers! It is anticipated that there will be a formal opening towards the end of this term and I hope that as many of those who were most affected by the building works will be able to visit. In time, the numbers on roll will increase, thereby helping to secure the place of Thrussington C. of E. Primary School within the community. Despite all the inconvenience caused by the building works of the past months, the school has continued to deliver a very good education for its children. Please check the school’s web-site for information on statutory test results. In addition, the school continues to integrate external assessment of its standards and the quality of the curriculum, particularly in English, Maths, Science, Music and Religious Education. This year, the school has been awarded its fourth consecutive Quality Mark for English and Maths. And it’s second consecutive Gold Primary Science Quality Mark. As a result of the school’s collaboration with “Thermo-Fisher Technical”, an international firm with a factory in , it has been awarded three sophisticated microscopes and auxiliary components. The children were given a conducted tour of the factory, as part of the presentation. The School continues to play its part in raising the awareness of charities and of making valuable contributions to the community. Staff members, Miss Berry, Miss Oatey and Mrs. Coles took part in the “Bubble Rush” fund raising event for Rainbows Hospice and raised over £700 for the charity. Contributions made to the recent Harvest Festival, held in Holy Trinity Church, have been made to a local charity for the homeless and there will be fundraising actions for a series of charitable events before the end of term. It is a necessary part of the curriculum that the School strengthens an awareness of the plight of others and seeks ways of making a contribution to their relief. A recent visit to places of worship in provided an insight into the needs of groups within our immediate community and how they are being served. The School remains very grateful to the number of volunteers who have supported and who continue to support its work. Mrs. Gill Freestone has “retired” after having served generations of pupils (and staff) by her commitment to listening to and guiding children’s reading; Mrs. Janet Heath and Mrs. Diana Clarke, who have served the School so well as Governors, have stepped down and Mrs. Tarlton-Weatherall, who has supported the Forest School, has also moved on. Rural schools, in particular, owe a great deal to the time given by volunteers to support and enrich the curriculum provided to its children.

10 Thrussington School has a building of which it can be proud. The work of the Parents, Teachers, Friends Association (P.T.F.A.), and the funds that the community has raised, is helping to furnish and resource the “new” school for the benefit of generations of children. Just this term, funding has been secured for the provision of technological hardware throughout the school; the provision of furnishings and fittings of the new reception classroom and the furnishing of a new school library. This represents several thousands of pounds and does not include the many thousands already raised for other furnishings, fittings, subsidies of visits etc. that the P.T.F.A. has raised over time. Thank you for your continued support of the work of the P.T.F.A. Thrussington is a much enriched school as a result of your generosity.

Mrs. E. Moore. Headteacher.

29 Wreake Drive, Rearsby, Leicester, LE7 4YZ 22 Thrussington Golf at Stapleford Park

Once again the Friday afternoon weather was kind to us as 14 players plotted their way round the hallowed course at Stapleford. With the B676 from Melton closed, everybody managed the tortuous alternative route with its single -track roads and passing bays as we made our way to the edges of Melton Borough. I was convinced that touring blazers should have been the order of the day.

A simple, yet challenging course, fast, undulating greens, well maintained fairways with tough fescue waiting to capture any wayward shots. Not one of the most picturesque courses we have played on, but worth a visit.

Divided into four teams, we set off a little later than planned, up the first fairway, to what appeared to be a reasonably friendly first hole. Not a bit of it, and we all soon learned that standing on the tee and belting the ball as far as we could, would not work here. This was a thinking course. Carefully plotting your way around was needed.

This event was one of our “no frills” simply golf events, with only coffee, cobs, and golf, with no formal presentations at the close. However a Kitty of £2.00 per head added motivation

Whilst the challenge of the course resulted in an overall lowering of our scores, there were several good results recorded. Our overall winner was PHILLIP GEE with a creditable score of 32 points. Identifying our runner-up was a little more complicated. Three players tied on 28 points, but after a triple count back, DAVID GAMBLE was adjudged to be 2nd, with KARL DONAGHEY 3rd and JIM LUDHAM 4th. Well done to them all.

Can I also again thank all those who supported this event.

As a result of the delayed start, several players had to depart quickly to meet evening commitments, however a few made it back to the Star to dissect the course and re-live all those 180 yard approach shots and tap-ins.

Although now, as the evenings draw in, and the weather becomes more unpredictable, I will try and arrange another event towards the end of November, followed by our traditional Christmas-New Year get together

24 Christmas Tree lights switch-on set for 8th December

Make a note in your diary – the official lights switch-on for Thrussington’s annual Christmas tree will take place on Friday 8th December. There will be activities on the village green from 6.30pm followed the official illumination of the tree at 7.00pm. A range of entertainments and attractions are planned, including: Music from a six-piece brass band playing carols and festive favourites A visit from Santa together with gifts for children who’ve been good. And probably the others as well. Free mince pies for all, kindly provided by The Star Mulled wine and other beverages It promises to be a superb festive evening for the village to get everyone in the Christmas mood. Simon Wells, of the Thrussington Christmas Tree Fund committee, said: “This is the first year that the ‘new’ committee has been in charge of the tree so we’ve been working hard to make sure that everything goes as well as possible. “Lots of people have been very helpful to us, so we’d like say how much we appreciate their support, especially David Gamble, who has been instrumental in handing over the reins.” The Thrussington Christmas tree will be arriving in the village on 28th November and is being provided by Welford Christmas Tree Farm. A team of volunteers will be on hand to place it in its customary position on the village green.

Simon said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who gets involved in erecting and lighting the tree. It is quite a job and requires time and expertise.” Following the Grand National Race Night fundraising event and the purchase of the tree, there remains around £1,500 in the Christmas tree kitty, and Isabel said that the committee had received several suggestions about how it could be spent. “There does seem to be a general feeling that more lighting could be added to the village green but this would be quite a large project requiring the co-operation of everyone who lives and works there, as well as the appropriate authorities. “Instead, for this year, we will be spending some money on updating the electrics of the tree and some new strings of lights will probably be needed but we have put any bigger plans on hold until 2018.”

Our 1 to 1 Befriending Service has been successful in receiving a second round of Lottery Funding

In our first 3 years of Lottery Funding we trained 100 volunteers and made 118 matches. The impact of the scheme is best described by quotes from people in the scheme. “He makes me feel less isolated, I feel better now I know someone is coming “ “If not careful I could find myself drifting aimlessly now that I am retired, but Befriending for Vista has given me a sense of achievement “ “A good Befriender can open up doors “ “This past year of befriending has enriched both our lives but in separate ways “ “It`s the best thing since sliced bread, just being able to talk and go out “ Could you be the best thing since sliced bread? Could you open up doors? There are many ways you can make a difference to a person with sight loss

 You could share a leisure interest  Go for a walk  Sit in and chat together

We are looking for Befrienders to visit a person with sight loss in your local area. Could you spare an hour a week? 30 WI REPORT

The October meeting was our Annual Meeting, which followed the usual format of reports on the Institute's financial position, from the Treasurer, and on the Institute's activities over the year, from the Secretary, followed by the President's address. With no major fund raising activity to boost funds, and receipts for the year of £920.30 and expenses of £954.14, a small loss of £33.84 was recorded. However, when the money on deposit was taken into account, the carry forward to the next financial year would be £827.89. The past year had been a busy one, with speakers at our meetings who entertained and enlightened us on a variety of subjects. We hosted the Group Meeting in March which went very well - thanks to the Committee's superb organisation and the help from all Members. We had an enjoyable outing to the and Community Heritage Centre in July. We played five Darts' matches, winning three and losing two, but were knocked out by WI in the first round of the Skittles competition. The President and Committee were willing to stand again and were voted in unopposed, namely: Sue Bradshaw (President), Janet Wheeler (Secretary), Stephanie Morgan and Veronica Summerfield.

An interesting panel of speakers has been arranged for next year, and Annual Subs, due in January, will be £41, half of which will be retained by the Institute.

Forthcoming Events:

The Group Carol Service is at Rearsby this year, at 7 pm on Monday, 4 December.

The Centenary Annual Council Meeting of the Leicestershire & Rutland Federation of WIs is to be held on Saturday, 10 March 2018, in a venue large enough to accommodate as many members as possible. Tickets £14. Please let Sue know if you would like to attend. So far she and Janet Heath have signed up.

There is a change of speaker(s) in November, from that listed in the Programme, see below.

Next Meeting: 9 November 2017, 7.30 pm, Village Hall Speaker: Anne & Eddie Guest - “Antarctica” Hostesses: Margaret Hill & Margaret Anderson

31 CHURCH WARDEN’S NOTES

As I write …the clocks go back next weekend (29th) and the year moves towards it’s close. We have celebrated “ Harvest”, and following the talk about the need for the Rothley Food Bank, I am glad to say that several donations of food etc. have been received, but we need to keep this “need” in mind….it doesn’t go away! so please keep your gifts coming. We now approach the end of the church’s year, but first there is our annual Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 12th Nov: – 9.30 am in church and on the Green at 10.45 ready to tune into the National Service at 11 o’clock. This year the flood-lighting of the church exterior should become ‘Red’ for the period (thanks to Patrick for enabling this to be done). This is a national trend on churches and public buildings in recent years and is an additional reminder that “we shall remember them” On Thursday 2nd Nov, in Rearsby Church (All Souls Day) at 7.00pm there is a short traditional Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for people who were close to us and have died in the last few years. Then Advent Sunday on the 3rd December sees the start of a new church year. As someone once said, “it is like the train has reached the end of this track”, and we move on to the next stage of our journey, perhaps by a new means of transport, visiting many of the old places, but experiencing some new ones as well. Our first event will be the Christmas Market on December 2nd at 10.00. (and hopefully , the usual donations for the tombola, gift-stall, cakes and raffle prizes will be forthcoming?) Our journey will take us to the traditional Christmas Services, Christmas Day on MONDAY (25th) and the Carol Service on Sunday 17th December. We then look forward to the New year, when I am sure that we will be visiting some new places? The Fosse Team are still waiting to appoint a new Team Rector and we hope and pray that the right person will soon be found to lead the Team in the new year. There seems to be two aspects of our church life (perhaps interwoven) - our responsibility for maintaining the church building and it’s associated costs and we thank all those who support this at our fund raising events, by the weekly collections and especially to everyone who gives regularly by monthly (or regular) St. Orders – this helps the monthly cash-flow! – We do not say it often enough but, “Thank You very, very much” The other aspect of church life is the worshipping of God and His Son Jesus Christ. If anyone would like to know more, the beginning of the new church year - Advent and the Christmas services - are perhaps a good place to start. You will be most welcome at any or all of these forthcoming events and services – I hope to see you.

God Bless Reg Morgan - Churchwarden 9,BackLane (0166424540)
