-ortfu'5 fIft$ PARLIAMENT Blacks should sit with Kannemeyer, says Hendrickse Parliamentary Staff THE State President should consider the appointment of two assessors from the "African community" to sit with Mr Justice Donald Kannemeyer in his inquiry into the shootings. This was suggested by the Rev Allan Hendrickse, Labour Party leader and chairman of the Ministers' Council, in the House of Representatives yesterday. Welcoming the appointment of-the one-man commission, he said he believed assessors from the African community would help the commission to understand the cultural background and suffering of the people. Expressed sympathy Mr Hendrickse said that while respecting the Bench, his party believed that in order to get through to' people's feelings it was necessary to speak and understand their language. There was no effect without a cause and in this case he hoped the causes would receive greater attention than simply the effects of a situation. In his address, Mr Hendrickse expressed sympathy on behalf of the House with the families who had been bereaved in Uitenhage and the in the past few Weeks. Referring to events at Uitenhage, he said. "We are aware of the fact of aspirations, denial of opportunity, the whole question of unemployment, inadequate facilities, inadequate educa, tional institutions, discrepancies, and the whole emphasis on the result of a 'rocess of separation. "Because of this, we believe there The Rev Allan Hendrickse ought to be a special effort made for communication between those who are in authority and have power, and those who are not in authority." "We condemn the use of violence by either the police or the people. In this instance we believe that if there were provocation, the police did have an alternative in terms of which they could have answered the situation." Mr Hendrickse said it was with sadness that he had to announce that five youngsters who had attended an athletics meeting in at the weekend were attacked on their way back to Uitenhage by a group of Africans. One youngster, a Muslim named Abdul Pandy, was allegedly hacked to death with an axe. Another youth, Ludwig Salie, died on Monday night The other three are in hospital.
