Presidents Report Another year of ups and downs, but one we can remember as being outstanding from our representative teams and the successful completion of our wonderful new building at the Illawarra Credit Union Hockey Stadium.

I’ve heard various options for names being tossed around, but the building informally known as the “Bullpen” is a fantastic addition to our list of achievements. I don’t believe there is a better view in Hockey in NSW (other than the Olympic Stadium, of course), and the building has been finished-off with high quality workmanship – it will be important that we all work hard to look after it and keep it in such good condition. Congratulations to all those people who have put in long hours to make this a reality. It is sure to have a huge impact for anyone wishing to encourage a more social atmosphere during and after games and training at Unanderra.

Congratulations to our representative teams this year - multiple winners in Veterans, as well as a stunning victory by our Open team in Newcastle. Add these to our continued success in Indoor tournaments and we could probably lay claim to being the strongest Association in the state. Our Veterans continue to provide a solid foundation for the Association, and my thanks go out to all those involved with organising Vets – the results we achieved are a direct result of this work. Our Open team was a young side this year and were simply outstanding, and it is hoped that this group of players can stick together for many years. Our juniors did not enjoy as much success as we have been used to this year (for a number of reasons), and if we wish to maintain our standing in NSW, we recognise that more work is needed to encourage and develop our future stars.

Our grade competitions ran well this year despite some different draw cycles. The introduction of technical officials for first and second grade games has continued to lead to an improvement in the conduct of our matches. We need to extend this formally to all grades and age groups. The standard of umpiring continues to lag behind the standard of play however, and this has often led to some frustration not just amongst players, but also those people who umpire when they don’t want to – a situation that is not in anyone’s best interests. Umpiring can be a rewarding and valuable experience, and we have to find ways to make the job more attractive to people – suggestions welcome!!!

I believe our Grand Final day this year was one of the best we’ve had for some time – close, exciting and very high standard games played and umpired in a great spirit by everyone involved – a great advertisement for our sport.

Thanks to all those people who have subscribed to “iHockeyTV” and given me some valuable feedback. I have been pleasantly surprised with the number of “views” some of the episodes get. You can find iHockeyTV either on YouTUBE, or as a free podcast found in the iTunes store.

A big thank you once again also to all those who work hard for Hockey – our Board members, club executives, coaches, managers, umpires and any other official or volunteer. Hockey is as much about you as anybody else – and I hope that you are able to get as much out of the sport, in terms of friendships and memories, as you put in. Special thanks to John Pemberton, year in and year out, for his fantastic work

organising much of what we all take for granted.

Thank you also to our sponsors, without whom Hockey as we know it would most likely be out of the reach of most people!

I do not intend to nominate again for the President’s position in 2012. It is a position that I have been honoured to fill for the past five years, and I thank those members for their support in this time – but I think five years is enough for anyone, and we now need someone with more enthusiasm and energy than I have displayed this year. I still plan to be involved with Hockey in a number of ways, but I wish the incoming President, Board and Association all the best for 2012 and into the future.

Craig Nealon President

Administration Report As usual it is a pleasure to work with the Illawarra Hockey fraternity. There are a large number of committed people who work closely together to achieve the best they can for Hockey both locally and at higher levels.

Look through this report and note the large number of Australian and NSW representative players and also read about the dominance of the Illawarra Veterans and Indoor teams in their state championships. In addition Illawarra took out the Open Mens title. Clearly Illawarra are the best performed Hockey association in NSW. All players and officials should be justifiably proud of these achievements. We must be doing lots of things very well.

The first grade competition is of a high standard as the recent Final Series highlighted. But there are concerns about the competitiveness of some of the teams and there appears to be a widening gap between the haves and have nots. The Board have spoken to the struggling clubs about their future plans and requirements and will establish a competition format committee to plan for the future. It is vital that the first grade competition remains strong and competitive.

Overall the IMHI competitions continued to run smoothly and without too much drama – obviously the main aim of the competitions.

Congratulations to Garry Bull and his hard working Building Committee (including Roger Franklin, Phil Brown, Warren Gale, John Thirlwell and Duane Adlington) on the construction of the building between the fields at the Illawarra Credit Union complex. The “Bullpen” as it is affectionately known provides excellent facilities close to the fields. With the imminent resurfacing of both fields at the complex, IMHI has facilities to again host international Hockey matches. Local Hockey should lobby strongly for the opportunity to showcase the region on the bigger scene.

Many thanks to ALL of the Board members for their efforts over the Hockey season. Their hard work and experience are invaluable for the successful functioning of the IMHI.

Special mention to outgoing President Craig Nealon who has decided to channel his

considerable strengths elsewhere on the IMHI Board. Craig should be very proud of his achievements during his 5 years tenue as president. The Presidency is a most demanding role – one in which everyone underestimates the time and dedication needed to fulfil the position. Craig has been involved in all local Hockey matters – making decisions, arbitrating disputes, listening to all comments & arguments - and always well organised and enthusiastic. Thanks, Craig.

Welcome to the new director Ian Counsell who has taken on the Development portfolio from Ray Tolhurst who continues to assist the Board with HNSW matters. Also welcome back to Terry Ashby who did not seek re-election at last years AGM but soon found he had a contribution to make to local Hockey and returned to the vice presidency early in the year.

My thanks also go out to those hard working club officials who made my job easier with their support. They are the backbone of the Club’s administration and I urge all other players to get in and have a go to support these club officials. In particular I thank Deanne Ross from Albion Park seniors and Jan Massie from Albion Park juniors; Kellie Thorpe and Janet Cowan from Cavaliers; Warren Gale & Brad Boon from Dapto; Dave Sharpe and Andrew Stevenson from Fairy Meadow; Dave Brookfield from Kiama; Brendon Cohen from Oak Flats Seniors; Marcus Reed from University seniors and Wendy Condon from University Juniors and Craig Arthur and Jonathan Castle from Wests. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to Jason Collett for all aspects of Croom Rd organisation, Wayne Billett as Judiciary Chairman and Allan Went for his continued role as Public Officer. Sarah Pickering did a fine job as Minkey co-ordinator. Thanks also to the new Southern Highlands HA administrator Kate Van Eimeren for her assistance with all matters relating to SHHA.

Thanks also to the players for supporting the annual Call to Arms – Mens Cancer Awareness day. Players made a gold coin donation when they took the field for the last competition round. Thanks to the organisers at each field – Dave Brookfield at Croom rd; Craig Arthur, Brad Boon and Brenden Mullaney at Lindsay Maynes and Craig Johnston at Uni Field for their collections. Together with the kind donation of the Uni Recreation and Aquatic Centre (URAC) of field hire fees for the day, we were able to again donate $1000 to the Illawarra Prostate Cancer Support Group. Well done to all.

Thank you to all officials of the Illawarra Women’s Hockey Association and the band of helpers in the canteen at Lindsay Maynes. Their hard work is greatly appreciated.

If I have missed someone who I should not have – Thanks for your help.

Sponsorship The IMHI is very appreciative of the continuing support of its sponsors - the ILLAWARRA CREDIT UNION as MAJOR SPONSOR (past 13 years for the IMHI and more recently the Major sponsor of ALL Illawarra Hockey competitions (Men’s & Women’s Field & Indoor) as well as the Illawarra Hockey Stadium); ILLAWARRA MASTER BUILDERS CLUB as Junior Hockey Sponsor (past 12 years); BETTA MAID CAKES & PIES as the Foods Sponsor (past 7 years), SMART EYES

OPTICAL as Umpires Sponsor over the past 4 seasons and FHE (formally Adrenaline Rush in their 6th year as Equipment Sponsor and Rob Davis has also been of great assistance supplying clothing to the representative teams and Hockey fraternity in general via the FHE Shop at the Illawarra Credit Union Hockey Complex).

It is very important that the IMHI, affiliated clubs and all players support ALL sponsors. Remember that the IMHI sponsorship monies lower the cost for all players playing in the IMHI competitions.

Media The Illawarra Mercury includes weekly results on Mondays with stories from the first grade matches on Wednesday. My thanks to Mike Driscoll and Michael Cox (and after Michael moved on to Tim Keeble and his helpers) for including the Hockey stories and results in the paper and to Terry Ashby who supplied match information for Michael/Tim’s stories.

Michael also ran the sports section of ABC Saturday morning radio and Craig Nealon and Terry Ashby were often interviewed for Hockey stories on the segment.

WIN TV did provide regular Hockey coverage during the season for 1.30 pm matches at ICU and University Fields. Unfortunately the local Rugby League and Soccer matches gain WIN TV priority for later Sunday afternoon filming.

Tony De Souza once again wrote a weekly column in the Wollongong Advertiser – Tony has been doing so for the past 10 years. Tony’s stories were always informative and accurate and were very much appreciated by the Hockey fraternity.

First grade results could also be heard on Wave FM Radio as well as media associated with Southern Highlands News, Prime TV and Southern Cross Broadcasting. Thanks to the contacts at these sources for promoting Hockey.

Overall the media coverage for the season past improved from the previous season.

Craig Nealon produced many episodes of local Field and Indoor Hockey on “iHockeyTV”, which you can visit either on YouTUBE, or as a free podcast found in the iTunes Store. It’s early days for this type of media initiative, but there is huge potential here to get the Hockey message out to a wide audience.

Web Site IMHI moved this season to incorporate all competition data on the Hockey Australia Hockey Net site. Wes Johnston organised for all clubs to register their players on Hockey Net (clubs could register their players or players could self register on line) and he also included all competition draws on the site. Many thanks to Wes - his expertise and organisation are very much appreciated.

John Pemberton continued to collect hard copy results sheets and manually enter all match data into the system and transfer the results to the ihockey site. The data entry on Hockey Net is most time consuming and initially hard copy lists of lots of extra data such as Best Player points, judiciary points, gradings etc had to be kept

for all competitions. However the software is evolving all of the time and by seasons end the former two data entries had been included electronically. So although currently the Hockey Net system is more time consuming that the former Diskray database it will over time be more time efficient as IMHI moves towards electronic capture of all competition data.

Contact details and links to all local Hockey clubs as well as sponsors links and all competition results can be found at www.ihockey.com.au. Many thanks to Craig Nealon who updates and maintains the ihockey site.

The IMHI Resource Library was kept on the sportslive web site until that site ceased operation in August. . The IMHI Resource Library (which includes all IMHI forms, Calendar and Board minutes) now needs a new home.

IMHI Golf Day 70 golfers enjoyed the excellent course and facilities at Port Kembla Golf Club on Thursday 25 August for the 12th IMHI Golf Day. The event was a 4 person Ambrose with a shotgun start. Cost was $60 each for which the players received the round of golf, drinks on the course, lunch during the round and dinner after the game during the presentation. The clubs were required to gain a number of sponsors ($400 per hole) or a group of four golfers. Companies very generously donated over 100 prizes for the various events as well as the raffle. The IMHI raised over $2000 from the Golf Day from the sponsorship and raffle proceeds. In addition, clubs that gained a hole sponsor were reimbursed for their efforts ($1500 in total). Many thanks to the Clubs that supported this very important IMHI Fundraiser.

Nett winners were the Wollongong Window World team. Runners up were Petstock Albion Park followed by the Dapto Leagues Club team. Gross winners were the Diskray team followed by the FHE Hockey Supplies and Uni Rec Centre teams. Nearest the Pins were won by Ken Kermode and Paul Van Eimeren. Drive and Pitch winner was Warwick Dillon and the longest Drive was that of Jeff Abraham.

Hole Sponsors (in order of their hole) were: Illawarra Credit Union, University Recreation and Aquatic Centre, FHE Hockey Supplies, Jones & Associates Dentists, Dapto Leagues Club, Specialised Automotive Services, Petstock Albion Park, Albion Park RSL, JSS Fabrications, PM Woods & Associates Solicitors, Diskray Pty Ltd Samson Controls Pty Ltd, Illawarra Master Builders Club, Wollongong Window World, Entertainment Distributors Company, Dolphin Screens and Blooms the Chemist. Many thanks for your support.

The IMHI is very appreciative of the following companies who have generously donated items as prizes for the golf competitions and for the raffle – CAF Computers, Crown West Cellars, Diskray Pty Ltd, Entertainment Distribution Company, FHE Hockey Supplies, Illawarra Credit Union, Illawarra Golf Range, Illawarra Master Builder Club, Jones & Associates Dentists, Mudcat Café, Petstock Albion Park, Russell Vale Golf Course, Samson Controls & University Recreation and Aquatic Centre. Presentations The Illawarra Junior Hockey Presentations were held at Illawarra Credit Union Fields after the Junior Grand Finals on Saturday 10 September. Major Premiers were

awarded their perpetual and individual trophies in each of the U11, U13 & U15 competitions; Wests Illawarra won the Club Championship trophy. The Under 17 presentations were made after their grand final on Wednesday 22 June.

121 people attended the Presentation Night at the Master Builders Club on Friday 23 September. The Illawarra Womens Association had a separate presentation function to co-incide with their 80 year celebrations (after their grand final).

Special guests included HNSW President Jeff McEwan, International Umpire David Gentles, IMHI & IWHA Life Members, sponsors and various Friends of Illawarra Hockey including the ICU Building Committee. Ticket price of $33 provided a 3 course dinner and 2 drinks tickets. Many thanks to Sheridan Brettle from the Builders for her assistance. The meal was excellent receiving favourable comments from many attendees. Craig Nealon did a fine job as always as MC and produced an excellent slide show of the award winners and also from his ihockeyTV clips as well as footage from all of the grand finals. Highlight of the evening was the official awarding of Life Membership to Wes Johnston.

Awards were also made to team and individual award winners as well as various Australian & NSW representatives. Daryl Elliott was the winner of the Administration Appreciation Award for his contribution to Illawarra Hockey over many seasons. A Special plaque was awarded to David Gentles for his 150th international umpiring appointment.

The presentations finished earlier than normal which allowed all present to chat about our favourite winter (and now for many summer) past time.

Life Membership for Wesley Johnston Wesley Johnston has awarded life membership of Illawarra Mens Hockey at the 2010 AGM. Below are the words of Life Members secretary Wayne Billett nominating Wes for life membership.

“Approximately 12 months ago all the current life members of Illawarra Men's Hockey Incorporated decided that we needed to form a life members group to assist in any facets of local hockey where possible. It was agreed that part of our group’s charter would be to nominate people for life membership to those who, in our opinion have contributed many years of dedicated service in making the game of hockey what it is in our local area.

The life members determined that the contribution made by Wes Johnston to our Association over many years is worthy of receiving a nomination for life membership.

Wes Johnston's contribution to our local hockey Association at all levels is without peer and deserves to be recognised as a life member of IMHI.

Attached is a brief summary of Wes's achievements.

Competition Report As Competition Director I have to say that 2011 has been a fairly successful year, though a challenging one no doubt, as it is always difficult to produce a draw that satisfies all clubs.

Most have been very supportive, however, obviously some clubs continue to struggle with certain aspects of the draw and every effort is made to be fair to all clubs. Clearly it’s not possible to please all of the people all of the time, however, I should say that any major grievances are considered early in the season, so those clubs that spend time evaluating the draw before it is published get due consideration where required.

In 2011 there were 38 senior men’s teams, as there were in the previous year. A significant change in the structure of the competition resulted from the withdrawal of Dapto from the 2nd grade competition. This resulted in a 6 team draw cycle meaning that 2nd grade teams didn’t always get to play with the rest of their club in consecutive timeslots and unfortunately not all clubs were similarly affected.

Albion Park and University did feel the effects of this with Uni fielding two teams in 2nd grade and Albion Park fielding two in thirds. The dilemma is in giving all teams the opportunity to support and back up for their other teams, but clubs who field one team in each grade possibly do also notice the impact when they are regularly are forced to play away from the rest of the club or out of logical sequence.

The junior competition featured 38 teams, one less than the previous year, comprising 7 teams in U17’s. There were ten teams in U15’s. There were ten teams in U13’s and ten in U11’s. It is somewhat difficult to produce a draw where clubs play together regularly, especially during the second round of games where the two divisions are split. This is also a result of clubs only fielding teams in certain age groups, however in most cases clubs with younger players doubling up in older age groups were not significantly disadvantaged.

Both senior and junior competitions ran free of major crises, and personally it has been a year for progressively improving my understanding of the job and developing appreciation for the finer aspects of the Competition Directors responsibilities in producing a satisfactory draw for all. Thanks go particularly to the IMHI Board of Directors for their support and assistance, particularly Wesley Johnston and John Pemberton.

Congratulations go to all club’s and players for their efforts and successes on the field playing in our IMHI competitions.

David Brookfield Competition Director

Minkey Hockey 2011 All went well for the Minkey Hockey season, with no major problems presenting themselves throughout the season.

The competition consisted of five Under 7’s teams(Albion Park Green and White,

Flames 1 and 2, Wests) and eight Under 9’s teams(Albion Park, Dapto, Flames, Fairy Meadow, Wests Blue & Red, University Blue & Red).

Minkey numbers are growing with 2 more teams than last year initially entered at the beginning of the season for the Under 7’s. Unfortunately Flames had to amalgamate their two teams half way through the season as they were unable to sustain their numbers.

Playing numbers are shown in the Table below. Team Total Players Total Players 2010 Notes 2011 Wests 27 31 Uni 19 13 2010 U9’s only 2011 U9’s only Gerringong 0 9 2011 no team entered Flames 21 18 Fairy 7 10 2011 Under 9’s only Meadow Dapto 10 12 2011 Under 9’s only Albion Park 24 17

We stayed with the same format of two x 15min games for the Under 7’s and two x 25min games for the Under 9’s. This seems to work well with the younger sides sustaining their interest.

The indoor games proved popular with the children and the parents, with lots of positive feedback from all. Keeping this as an option when we don’t have outdoor fields available is definitely worthwhile.

Both carnivals went well, with all the kids having a great day. The Under 9’s being the larger of the two carnivals was a great morning, with games and decisions going down to the wire. Lots of fun was had by all.

As for any changes for next season the main feedback I was getting was from Under 7’s parents and coaches that the season ran a bit long for them.

2011 proved to be a great season and a definite learning curve for myself never having organised or ran anything like this before. I thoroughly enjoyed the year watching the children improve so much throughout the season. A special thank you to Richard Hayman - his hand over of the roll and support throughout the year proved invaluable. Also thank you to Wes Johnson for his direction throughout the year and help with the Carnivals.

Sarah Pickering Minkey Hockey Co-coordinator

Development The main focus from the Development portfolio this year has been to consolidate the role of the Technical Officials (TO) in the Illawarra Men’s Hockey Incorporated competitions. The role of the TO was introduced in 2010 through the work of Ray Tolhurst into all 1st Grade matches. This year we were able to extend this role into 2nd Grade with the home team providing the people to fill this role. This was also the case for Under 17 matches. Slowly, the TO role is being recognised as part of the officiating team with the appointed umpires. Strong Match Day by-laws, along with their application, will see the TO role take on more and more importance in making the games run smoothly for the players, the teams, the clubs and the Association. I would like to thank all clubs for their assistance. It was great to see a number of former players and umpires coming forward to fill these roles. I would also like to thank all those who helped fill these rolls. We particular welcomed back former umpire and IMHI Life Member, Gerry Kelly to an officiating role. We now need to consider if we are able to extend the appointment of TO’s through all grades in future season. This will place a challenge before all clubs, although in most cases there are supporters on the side lines who would be able to more than capably fill these roles. I would like to consider that formal qualification for TO’s is also on the agenda for 2012. We will be looking to work with Hockey NSW to run accreditation sessions in our area and encourage our TO’s become qualified under the accreditation program. This will allow people to become involved as a TO outside our competition structure, if they wish and perhaps move into representative matches. Importantly, locally, it will improve the level of support we can provide to our umpires and players. The other development during the closing stages of this season has been the review of the match results sheets. The Board has given the go ahead to develop a revised match result sheet, removing the need for all players to sign on before they take the field. This will result in a much more legible record for the association. Proposed changes to the by-laws will support this move. Again, thanks to all clubs for their participation and co-operation through the 2011 season. Ian Counsell Development Director

Indoor Hockey Report 2010 Local Competitions Finals winners U13's A - Wests Blue U13's B - Uni Red U15's - Uni Red C division - Wests B Division 1 - Grumpies B Division 2 - Tubesteaks Black A Division - Uni

The 2010 Indoor season has once again been successful with a number of our best players returning to play in the local competition. I feel that the grading system for the teams that nominate is good as the top players all play in the same division and by the way the finals went not all the top teams won. The number of teams that nominated has grown again this year that is why we had to divide U13's & B division into two separate divisions.

It is good to see the number of junior teams growing as this means that Illawarra indoor hockey will continue to thrive. This has once again been shown at state level by all Illawarra being in finals & the only team that lost were the U13's in a very close final. Another plus is the number of junior umpires that are being developed by Craig Klaus.

State Championships Illawarra again won Open men, Masters, U17's & U15's. The Open Men's & U17's championships were both held at the ICU stadium as were the National Titles for open men's & women's. It was disappointing to see NSW hockey play the Nationals for U15's at Uni & the U21's girls & boys at Berkley stadium.

I would like to thank all the coaches , manages & umpires that gave up their time to help the Illawarra teams as well as the amount of time that Donna Rieck gives to filling out paperwork so all can play.

IMHI Planning and Illawarra Hockey Inc Report In summary, the past year for IHI has once again been hectic. The Board of IHI has continued to manage, develop and direct the organization in the areas of operations; maintenance; major capital works; sponsorship & grants; procedures & policy; and strategy. The greatest efforts having been in the areas of major capital works and operations.

With regards major capital works, IHI has continued this past year to align decisions with the updated Long Term Capital Plan originally prepared in 2008. The major item being the tendering and construction of the Viewing/Amenities Building between the outdoor synthetic turf fields. This project overseen by the Board has been progressed through the Centre Building Committee originally comprising Garry Bull as Chairman, with John Thirlwell, Roger Franklin and Warren Gale. Terry Ashby was an early member and Phil Brown joined the committee for project management support. Specific mention must be made of the contributions of time including significant in-kind professional assistance by Roger Franklin and RKF Engineering Services. Without this, the project would still be a plan, rather than reality.

The successful building tender for $426,939 by Adlington Homes led to an exceptional working relationship and delivery of scope by Duane Adlington and his staff and contractors. Additionally, various design & approval costs ($30,591); site preparation & earthworks carried out by RKF Engineering Services ($13,404) with in- kind design support valued at >$60,000; concrete supply by Cleary Bros ($22,915); plumbing and sewerage services by Dapto Plumbing ($71,588) and glass & railings by Johnsen’s Glass ($50,000). The total cost including all design and approval work, plus all variations ($27,634) was $643,071 incl GST.

This was funded from the following sources: IHI ($334,000) supported by ICU Sponsorship; Communities Sport & Recreation Facilities Grant ($110,000); Wollongong City Council (WCC) Sports Facilities Reference Group (SFRG), Sports Planning Process ($75,625); NSW Community Building Partnerships Program (CBPP) 2009 ($33,000) together with IMHI ($66,000) and IWHA ($20,000).

Also, $200,000 from WCC SFRG Sports Planning Process has been approved towards the George Kolsky field renewal. Along with new LED scoreboards at a cost of $18,600 (50% funding from NSW CBPP 2010) purchased and installed for the start of the 2011 outdoor hockey season.

However, many other items where achieved or are still outstanding including: 9 Playability issues with Ross Robinson field will be resolved with replacement by Sports Technology International (STI) under warranty in late 2011. 9 Continuing partnership with Twilight Tournaments community youth social inclusion program for Hockey. 9 New potential long term customers for stadium in Floorball NSW with competition to start in 2012. 9 Cleaning of GK field by Veolia (a donation) very successful. 9 Damage to Stadium roofing ($2,300) during 120kmh winds plus lighting tower and fittings on Ross Robinson field ($11,900 including fittings) repaired under insurance. 8 Maintenance and general cleaning still being covered by volunteers. 8 Training nets redesign and installation at a cost of $10,000 (est.) still not completed.

A list of key goals that have been achieved and those to be initiated in the upcoming year follow. Some of these are carryovers from last year, as they are either long term, or still outstanding:

9 Completion of a shelter viewing facility between the hockey fields to improve the amenity for both players and spectators alike – ACHIEVED !! 9 An improved formal relationship with Wollongong City Council that delivers benefits reflecting the current no cost, volunteer supported position for hockey in the Illawarra – ACHIEVED !! 9 Effective communication to local Govt. members at all levels to assist with successful grant submissions that support the prioritised facility upgrades including the turf replacement and field shelter building – ACHIEVED !! 9 Replacement of the synthetic turf on George Kolsky field – UNDERWAY !!

1. A maintenance plan that recognises annual and long term requirements and delivers lower cost repairs to IHI for the future. 2. Creation of a Strategic Plan for Illawarra Hockey Inc for the next 5 years.

3. Creation of effective sub-committees that lesson the load on the few, increase the revenue base and also provide increased innovation and initiative in delivering on the goals of IHI. 4. To move towards a paid Operations Manager, who can release our volunteer board from day to day issues and increase the focus on governance, policy and strategy required for the effective administration and development of the center. 5. Finalise fit out of Centre Building Viewing Room facility and its usage policy and procedures. 6. Continuation of major sponsorship with the Illawarra Credit Union.

A major item for IMHI planning included progression on discussions for an amalgamation between IMHI and IWHA. There is much more to be addressed here, however agreement this year to formally work together in the areas of umpiring, junior development and representative coaching are a positive step forward in this journey.

I look forward to once again working with the IMHI Board in whatever capacity, in our endeavours to deliver world class hockey facilities and services to the Illawarra hockey community.

Garry Bull, Director Planning and Chairman Illawarra Hockey Incorporated

Representative Teams Reports Well the season is over and we had some ups and downs. The Open Mens had a good win. We had two under 17's teams the Division 1 team were unfortunately beaten in the Final by Newcastle. The second side played well but just didn't quite get there. Under 15's were narrowly beaten in most games or came away with a draw. With the omission of Blake from the team with higher level commitments the team struggled but are still holding their position in Division 1. The second side made it to the Final only to be beaten by Orange. The Under 13's had a few hurdles to overcome with both teams being in Division 1 and the Developments side had a really young team and had some rather unfortunate defeats. Our under 11's look like they will be an up and coming side in the future.

Congratulations to all the players that were selected in State squads and teams.

Looking forward to next year with a renewed outlook and the way the selections will be handled and hoping we can come back up to the top of the pools again.

Janet Cowan Director of Representative Teams

Senior State Championships – Newcastle – 13 to 15 May

Team: Simon Beaton (c/c), Nathan Ackroyd, Josh Anderson, Matt Burke, Jack Hayes, Mitch Hurry, Alex Mackay, Shane McLeish, Dean Nealon, Flynn Ogilvie, Heath Ogilvie, Olly Walker, Josh Walters, Chris Whitehall. manager Scott McGlin.

Results: Friday – def Macarthur 6 – 0, def Sydney 5 – 2. Saturday – def Goulburn 4 – 2, semi def Newcastle 4 – 2. Sunday Final Illawarra 1 def Grafton 0

Coaching Side: All players played to the plan/s that were put in place. My main focus was on our thought process. Everyone was a talented player but it was the ability of the players to put into actions the right outcome at the right time. I wanted our defenders to defend, playmakers to be playmakers and goal scorers to be goal scorers. That was our first job and only after your first job is done can you help out a mate in their job.

We had some injuries which hindered us. Heath had shin soreness in the round games which we were able to rest when in the lead. Chris Whitehall was hit in the ankle and sat out the remainder of that game. I was hit in the knee first game and rested when in the lead. Josh Walters was crunched in the last round game and had sore ribs when breathing before the semi. Flynn rolled his ankle in the semi final which blew up after the game.

Despite this Scottie managed them well, had strapping and ice everywhere. Josh spoke to me before the semi and thought he would be out for the game. I left it up to him and said it was his call. He didn’t suit up before the game but to my surprise he came on towards the end of the first half when our remaining strikers were doing it tough. He played through this and also the final which was good to see Josh step up to his own personal challenges.

Flynn’s ankle kept him out of the final. He was on one leg but when I called on him when Newcastle got within 1 goal of us he was straight on. He came on and made some important traps and played his role in the final goal.

I was impressed with the calmness of the guys in the final. We defended for 59 out of the 60 minutes but they never had one good clear chance. I don't even think they had a corner.

I wouldn’t have a drama picking the same team again next year. I spoke with Steve Mayo and Wes about the team before I chose them. We agreed on all bar Matt Burke. They believed I should take some of the younger guys. Matt was one of our better performers and his experience showed through in critical moments - even compared to some of our NSW representatives. Although I am happy with the youth policy I do believe we need at least 3 experienced guys to help the young guys.

It was good to see 2 players selected in the NSW country team - Chris Whitehall and Alex Mackay.

Management side of things: I took on the organising role before the championships and Scottie was there for the games.

Several people withdrew at the last moment. Maybe a system where people who pull out during the final week before the championships without a valid reason should be suspended for the amount of games they would have played at the champs. This has been mentioned as a fix for the Sydney team also. I believe the reasons given

by these players were poor and would be subsequently suspended under my proposal.

Accommodation – There were problems with the booking of the accommodation as only Friday and Saturday nights were booked, although it originally was requested for the Thursday night as well. Fortunately we able to book us in at another motel for the Thursday night.

Uniforms - The 2 original sets of uniforms I was given were all size Large bar about 4 shirts. I got the under 17s shirts and was able to make a complete set of small or medium size for the guys. Given the majority of them are small guys the large shirts would have been ridiculous. During the games even the medium ones were too big. My suggestion would be to use the Under 15s or maybe 13s next time.

The days of baggy sports shirts are long gone. These may be comfortable for the veterans sides but given our senior representative side should be fit and generally athletic the association could look at new shirts of a smaller make.

I don’t believe we need anything in terms of training equipment. There may be a need to have a hit as a group once before we go away but until the team is spread around more clubs I don't see this is necessary with the amount of hockey most of the guys are playing in Sydney and Wollongong comp.

The U17s travelled to Bathurst for the state championships and had a great carnival only to be beaten in the final by Newcastle 3.2. The behavior of all the boys on and off the field was excellent. The accomadition was also very good. I would like to thank Tony and Margaret Boothroyd for prepairing lunches and cooking BBQ teas for both sides.

However on a down side i thought the Illawarra board could have named the coach a lot earlier than they did as the delay only hindered our chances of being state champions. I did report last year about the lack of training gear for all rep sides and this still has not changed.

Results Beat Lithgow 5-0 (scorers Blake Govers 2, Steve Boothroyd, Jack Hayes, Michael Dun) Beat Grafton 5-1 (scorers Blake Govers 3, Jack Hayes, Michael Dun) Drew Sydney 5-5 (scorers Steve Boothroyd 2, Jack Hayes ,Blake Govers ,Michael Dun) Semi - Beat Tamworth 6-4 (scorers Blake Govers 4, Jack Hayes, Brock McCracken) Final - Lost Newcastle 3-2 (scorers Blake Govers ,Steve Boothroyd)

Luke and myself would like to congratulate the boys on such a gutsy display of hockey all weekend.

Illawarra U15 no. 1 team participated in the NSW U15 outdoor championships held at Narellan in June. Illawarra had two state representatives unable to play, however, the team worked hard and improved with every game eventually defeating Dubbo in the play off for relegation into Division 2.

Results: Draw with Lithgow 2-2 Defeated by Grafton 3-0 Defeated by Tamworth 1-0 Defeated by Gouburn 2-0

Illawarra number 1 team finished last in their pool and played off for relegation and defeated Dubbo 6-0.

Two players, Daniel Olsen and Max Hughes, were selected to attend the NSW Hockey U15 High Performance Camp.

The carnival at Moorebank had great participation had by all. Started off a little slow but by the last game the team started to gel together and played as a team, pushing the ball around, communication improved also.

Arriving at the state championships at Macarthur, the first game picked up where they left off, they won both games on Saturday and they played really strong.

Sunday first games was really hard with an unfortunately loss, however the team played really hard and followed on to the next game also against a hard team and come away with the win.

Monday won the last round match to come on top of the pool ladder, this meant that the boys would be playing Newcastle in the final and had a hard fought draw but because of the finishing position in the pool we were in the final against Orange.

The final was a great game but just couldn’t find the back of the net and lost 2-0.

The side preformed outstanding all weekend.

I would like to thank coaches – Matt Davis, Jonathon Castle, and myself Wayne Jolliffe as Manger. All parents and all players for there efforts and for having a great weekend.

Under 13 Boys State Championships – Goulburn – 2 to 4 July

No. 1 team in A Division: Callum Mackay (c ), Thomas Condon & Daine Richards (vc), Harrison Cobbin, Patrick Everett, Callum Grimmer, Tayne Jolliffe, Zac Nyrhinen, Will Orth, Adam Tarrant, Josh Towle, Hayden Welsh, Luke Westblade. Coach: Chris Richards, Manager: Wendy Condon

Carnivals: 1. Goulburn: Team undefeated, winning all games convincingly. Teams faced : Tumut; Sydney; Macarthur; ACT; Southern Highlands and Goulburn. For = 19 goals, Against = 3. Matches 20 min duration.

2. Moorebank: Results : 2 losses (Sydney 1; Central Coast); one draw (Lithgow).

State Championships: A most unfortunate draw! Probably the four best teams (Sydney 1; Central Coast; Far North Coast and Illawarra 1) were all in same pool. As a result, teams that Illawarra convincingly beat in carnivals progressed in other pools to semi-finals / or playing off for higher positions.

Results : 2 losses (C. Coast and Sydney) both games 3-1; one draw against FNC (2 all); win against Parkes (6-1).

Games against C. Coast and Sydney were very close. Illawarra was the first team to ‘rattle’ Sydney and break-down their structure. Illawarra should have won game against FNC, but the team did not capitalise on chances. Game against Parkes – Illawarra totally dominated all aspects of game. This strong performance, being a great way to finish the tournament, also highlights the difference in standards between the pools (especially since the Parkes coach said the Parkes team played their best hockey against Illawarra).

Three players were selected in the State Squad : Callum Mackay; Daine Richards and Zac Nyrhinen. Callum and Daine gained further selection into the State Team.

Coach: Chris Richards was an exemplary coach. His dedication to unite the boys and have them playing to the best of their ability was outstanding. Chris constantly introduced the boys to new skills; extended their capacity to play a variety of positions and strategies; introduced fitness drills; gave thorough feed-back to players and led by example in terms of being committed to Illawarra Hockey. The boys learnt a great deal about their own hockey skills and being part of a team. The players could not have been prepared any better.

Accommodation: Wonderful accommodation! Would recommend Best Western, Trappers Inn. It should be noted that the manager and guests at the motel

complemented the team on their wonderful behaviour.

Bus: Parents were told, from the beginning, that there would be no bus organised to transport players to/from Goulburn. Therefore, parents considered that it was an absolutely unnecessary expense to have a bus travel from Nowra, when all but one team member had family staying at Goulburn. There was ample transport available to ‘ferry’ boys between venues without the expense of a bus.

Organisation: Thanks to Janet Cowan who answered my many emails, helping me with all my questions and concerns. It was a steep learning curve, not having done the role before. It should not be assumed people automatically know what to do to fulfil the role of team manager for carnivals and the State Championships.

There are a few areas that I feel need to be improved : 1. Carnivals: Payment was not made by IMH for the Goulburn Carnival. I was most embarrassed when I was asked by officials to pay $250. I offered to pay on my credit card so the team could play. They didn’t have the facilities to accept this form of payment. I reassured the organisers IMH would pay immediately. This lack of organisation does not reflect well on IMH.

Organisation for the Moorebank carnival was not any better. IMH indicated we would supply umpires. This was not organised and only became apparent when I was checking that payment for this carnival had been made, a few days prior to the carnival. It was left up to me to try to find an umpire at very short notice and, when this couldn’t be done, I had to contact the Moorebank committee and apologise. Once again, IMH did not present a very good image to other hockey associations.

2. Permission Notes: I was given only one permission note for the team (which covered ‘code of conduct’ for the first carnival only). I designed my own medical information sheet and emergency contact details, which I asked parents to complete. I felt this was essential since I was responsible for the boys for three days / two nights at Goulburn. Details required included known illnesses / allergies; medication requirements; medicare number etc. IMH needs to have a standard form which can be used by all team managers, for all carnivals / championships.

3. The ‘checklist’ and ‘role description’ developed by NSW Hockey proved invaluable. IMH needs to develop similar documents to fully support Team Managers, especially when they have not undertaken the role in the past.

Conclusion : The selection of the team began at the end of March, which allowed 3 months for full preparation. This time frame is essential if Illawarra wants to compete effectively.

It should be noted that the team’s preparation was interrupted by four members of the team being asked to play in the U15 Development Team. This was a great development opportunity but it became a problem due to clashes with training times, even though the U13 team’s training was booked well in advance. This oversight caused tension and confusion for all concerned. If the U15 training was better

planned, the situation would have been avoided.

It was a very rewarding experience to be associated with such great boys and an inspiring coach who included me in all aspects of preparing the players for the State Championships. At all times, the players displayed excellent sportsmanship and respect for their coach, fellow players and manager. I was proud to be their manager and proud of the type of player Illawarra Hockey produces.

Wendy Condon. Manager

Development team in B Division: Mackenzie Cole, Rhys Coombes, Tom David, Joshua Davies, James Gibson, Ben Hayman, Lachlan Jones, Dean McPherson, Kyle Michels, Sam Mulhearn, Luke Pearce, Jake Shepherd, Michael Smith, Mat Tyler, Bradley Thompson, Joel Weston

Moorebank U13 Carnival – Sunday 19 June The U13 Illawarra Development side competed in Division 2 of the Moorebank U13 Carnival and finished with 1 win against Nepean (1-0), 1 draw against Nepean (0-0) and 3 losses (Newcastle 2 defeated our team 5-0, Macarthur 2 defeated us 3-0 and Central Coast Girls defeated 2-1). All games were played on a sand-based turf field.

U13 Illawarra Development fielded 2 goal keepers for this carnival. The keepers shared goal tending responsibilities for the carnival. Due to the 25min one way format of the games the keeper that was not goal tending played on the field. The Coach and Manager believe that this format was successful and should be encouraged.

Of interest is the fact that Macarthur 2, Newcastle 2 and Nepean teams were all placed in Division 3A and 3B pools at Goulburn U13 State Championships. Surely after the Moorebank Carnival someone looked at the results and wondered why Illawarra 2 was in Division 1 for Goulburn.

Goulburn U13 Boys State Championships – 2nd – 4th July The U13 Illawarra Development side were poorly mismatched at Goulburn, being soundly beaten in all matches. All games were played on a mix of sand and water based turf.

Pool Matches Newcastle (1) defeated Illawarra Dev 17-0 Parkes defeated Illawarra Dev 7-1 (goal scored by Joel Weston) Macarthur (1) defeated Illawarra Dev 19-0

Play-offs (4th Pool 3 vs 4th Pool 4) Far North Coast defeated Illawarra Dev 8-0

COMMENTS Coach - Marty was wonderful with the boys and taught them great skills, as well as imparting good sportsmanship standards and values in all members of the team. It was an absolute delight to work alongside him.

Information - My position as Manager was at times very difficult, the lack of information being given to our team families was appalling, and I should say still is. It is now 2+ weeks after the event, and families still do not have any idea what expense they are going to be hit with.

Knowing that this is NOT the 1st time the Illawarra Men‟s Hockey Association has ever sent a team away to Championships, I am astounded that there is no standard information sheet handed out to all families on Selection Day. It obviously will never be an exact science at that early stage, but you can pretext it with “based on last year … cost of training on turf 1 hour per week …” etc. I do, however, believe that by the time the teams get to the Championship, the families should already have been invoiced for costs. The small amount of information I was able to find out, was generally by accident or by asking, no-one was forthcoming to help.

Uniform - At no time, until mentioned 10 days before Goulburn by Wendy Condon (Manager – Illawarra 1) was anyone in our Team told that it was an expectation that the Team wear Illawarra Polo Shirts or Fleeces when travelling or at meals as a Team. This issue was then exacerbated for those families who could afford the additional expense by the FHE not having any stock. This is information that should be given from the beginning on a standard Information Sheet as mentioned above.

Accommodation - The Development team was booked into the Astor Hotel/Motel. This was a 2 storey motel wrapped around a “Pub”. Not at all a suitable venue to accommodate young children. There were over 30 rooms in this Hotel, and rather than bunch all of our rooms close together for ease of looking after the boys, we found ourselves spread across the 30+ rooms and upstairs and downstairs.

The quality of the rooms ranged from extremely high to extremely poor. At least 1 of the rooms had loose wires hanging out of walls. There was also the matter of the Hotel having “semi-permanent residents” living in rooms beside our boys. These “semi-permanent residents” were not the sort of people you would like to have live near you.

Transport - The bus driver, Roger, was very efficient and understanding of our needs. It was however extremely clear, that this was an expense we could have done without. There were more than enough parents staying in Goulburn for the weekend, or travelling up and back each day, to sufficiently transport the Team to and from games, motel and meals.

Goulburn Carnival Organizers - I cannot speak highly enough of the Goulburn Hockey Association and their running of the U13 State Carnival. There was always someone there with a smile on their face and a helping hand.

Jeff McEwan – Hockey NSW - After complaints were made in a public forum by 1 or 2 of the parents about how poorly our Illawarra Development Team was being treated by having been placed in Division 1, Jeff McEwen took the time to come and speak with the boys just before the beginning of their final match. Jeff got down on the grass with the boys and told them how proud he was of how well they were going, and that it had been unfortunate that the Pools had fallen they way they had.

Jeff gave each of the boys a small gift, and the boys responded really well to his acknowledgment of their courage and abilities as a team.

Injuries - Our Team sustained numerous injuries during the Carnival, thankfully none of them were serious. These injuries were however a direct result of being in the wrong Division.

True Grit - I have never been more proud than during the Dev Teams last game. These young kids took the field knowing they had nothing to lose and everything to gain. They played up another level to what they had all weekend, and not once did anything give up. On several occasions during the match, I (as Manager) had to go out on the field and carry off one of the boys. They were truly inspirational and have all touched my heart. Illawarra Men‟s Hockey has a wonderful future with these boys coming up through the ranks!

Development Team Parent Complaints - I know that Craig Nealon was bombarded with parent complaint emails, when the Team returned from Goulburn. Please let me make myself clear, both as Manager and as a Parent, I do not condone the manner in which some of these complaints were written. The facts are justifiable, but requesting compensation/gifts to make the boys that were in the team feel better I do not believe is necessary.

Each and every boy in the Team had a great weekend. They made new friends and I doubt very much, that anyone of them came away feeling bad. I have spoken to at least ½ of the boys in the last week and all of them are hoping they can make the team again next year, so we can all have fun together again. There are no issues from the boys, these are parent-issues.

I honestly believe that „compensating‟ these young boys will make them wonder what they did wrong. A Certificate of Acknowledgement for representing the Illawarra would be more than satisfactory, and should be an automatic for all teams.

Let‟s keep this positive „team-building‟ experience, positive!

Nerida Smith Manager U13 Boys Illawarra Development

Illawarra Under 11’s The U11’s this year attended three carnivals and performed well at each of them.

First carnival was held at Moorebank, we managed to make the Semis and lost to ACT which was a good result.

Second carnival was at Sutherland, we struggled when playing on the grass but performed well on the turf, we missed the semis on goal difference.

Third Carnival was at Macarthur, played well and again, very close games but again just missed out on making the semis.

The kids had a great time and it was clearly visible that they developed progressively

at each carnival and it looks good for the future with a good group of kids willing to participate in whatever could be arranged.

I enjoyed working with them and look forward to watching them in the coming years.

The team consisted of the following players - Jack McMullan, Jonah Campbell, Connor Tuddenham, Dean McPherson, Jake Rieck, Joel Westblade, Jake Sheppard, Liam Frost, Callum Joyce, Daniel Mayo, Caelan CJ Smith, Matt Tyler, Bailey Frost GK, Tom David GK

David Rieck Coach Umpire’s Report Senior Umpires Club allocated appointments continued to be used this season for 2nd to 5th Grade. This met with some success with most clubs completing their allocations. As the same as the previous season 1st Grade umpires were allocated, where possible as neutral umpires. All 1st Grade umpires have been helpful with advising their availability throughout the season.

There were problems this year with umpires not turning up through all Grades. Towards the completion of the season, with the approval of the Board, clubs were being fined for umpires not showing up.

There was a complaint from one club that they were getting too many weekly allocations for their club to cover their umpiring appointments. A review of the allocations showed that club allocations matched the number of club teams in the various grades.

The Final Series completed this year were very competitive with some grade semi finals. Finals and grand fines extending into double extra time. The 1st grade grand final was umpired by David Gentles and Tyson Street. Other Grand Final umpires included 2nd grade Craig Nealon and Wes Johnston, 3rd grade Justin and Marcus Reed, 4th grade Craig Klaus & Ken Walker and 5th grade Dave Brookfield and Danny Shipp.

This year Clubs agreed at the SGM to pay umpires per game after they umpired. This approach appears to not be as successful as payment of juniors umpires.

Junior Umpires The junior season started well with club allocated umpires for the U17s competition during the round games. The allocation of umpires for the U17s final series was successful with Senior umpires covering these games. The U17 Grand Final being umpired by David Gentles and Tyson Street.

U11’s, U13’s and U15’s had three umpire coaches and a new Junior Umpire Convenor Vicki Cowan. There were a few new umpires starting this year. The junior games were allocated appointments for each age group, using junior umpires who either played or were independent umpires and sometimes clubs were allocated games.

The final appointments were based on the umpire coaches’ recommendations on using junior umpires and umpires who represented Illawarra at state championships and carnivals. The final series were successful and standard of umpire was high in each game.

Our most improved junior umpires were Jack Adams and Megan Kras, after returning a successful Under 13’s State Championships, were Jack was reserve umpire for the Division 1 final and Megan umpiring the Division 3 final.

Recommendation: A program needs to be set up to maintain and coach all interested umpires at both Senior and Junior levels. All umpires will need to be accredited through the HockeyEd system. Payments for umpires at local games should be reviewed.

Umpire Directors: In recent discussions with the Illawarra Women’s Association on amalgamation of both associations, it was agreed that both umpire directors can work together to start improvement of umpires. This process has begun with indoor hockey appointments. Further recommendations will come with completion of the indoor season.

HockeyEd Course: Both IMHI and IWHA Umpire Directors ran a Community theory badge course on 17th September 2011 with 14 people participants - with one person from the South Coast Association. Beginner accreditation and theory was offered on the day to those we thought were at that standard.

There are now four accredited hockeyed umpire coaches which cover both associations with the number of accredited umpires slowly growing.

A Division: In their first match on Friday, Illawarra easily accounted for Central Coast

9-2 and in a closely fought encounter, defeated Sutherland 2-1. On Saturday, in a not so impressive match, Illawarra drew with Tamworth 1-1. With teams for the semi finals already determined, the last match against Parkes was to see who would top the pool. Unfortunately, Illawarra lost to Parkes 3-1.

Sunday`s semi final saw Illawarra pitted against Sydney. Improving as a team with every match, Illawarra secured a finals berth with a 2-1 victory. The final was a rematch against Parkes who easily accounted for Newcastle 4-1 in the other semi. Illawarra gained the upper hand early in the match with a great goal from Warren Adams. The weekend of hockey was taking its toll on all the players and the match was played at a slower pace. With a lot of guts and determination, Illawarra held on to the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the match to be declared NSW 040 Champions for 2011.
