Bringing together theories of racial identity, hybridity, and postcolonialism, this project demonstrates how twentieth century and contemporary ethnic American SFF authors are currently utilizing tropes of SFF to blur racial distinctions and challenge white/other or colonizer/colonized binaries. Ethnic American SFF authors are able to employ SFF landscapes that address narratives of victimization or colonization while still imagining worlds where alternate representations of racial and ethnic identity are possible. My multicultural approach pairs authors of different ethnicities in order to examine common themes that occur in ethnic American SFF texts. The first chapter examines SFF post- apocalyptic depictions of racial and ethnic identity in Samuel Delany’s Dhalgren and Gerald Vizenor’s Bearheart: The Heirship Chronicles. Chapter two explores depictions of ethnic undead figures in Octavia Butler’s Fledgling and Daniel José Older’s “Phantom Overload.” Chapter three addresses themes of indigenous and migrant colonization in Celu Amberstone’s “Refugees” and Rosura Sánchez and Beatrice Pita’s Lunar Braceros: 2125-2148. ii CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION: ETHNIC FUTURITY Perhaps the greatest challenge or potential of contemporary science fiction is to imagine political/social futures in which race does not simply wither away but is transformed, changing into something different and perhaps unexpected. This would require paying attention to an actual history of race (and racism) in which what constitutes the Other and the Self is always under revision. This means noting not only where traditional definitions of race and racism are broken but also how they are reformed in new guises…I will, therefore, hazard a prediction. The future of sf and sf studies will be informed by race as a significant component of our social/political lives and any historically conceived future. —De Witt Douglas Kilgore Without an image of tomorrow, one is trapped by blind history, economics, and politics beyond our control. One is tied up in a web, in a net, with no way to struggle free. Only by having clear and vital images of the many alternatives, good and bad, of where one can go, will we have any control over the way we may actually get there in a reality tomorrow will bring all too quickly. The goal is to contrast the challenges, mission choices, and emerging prospects for propulsion and power, to identify which prospects might be more advantageous and under what circumstances, and to identify which technology details might have greater impacts. Unlike prior studies, the infrastructure expenses and prospects for breakthrough advances are included. This first year's focus is on determining the key questions to enable the analysis. Accordingly, a work breakdown structure to organize the information and associated list of variables is offered. A flow diagram of the basic analysis is presented, as well as more detailed methods to convert the performance measures of disparate propulsion methods into common measures of energy, mass, time, and power. Other methods for equitable comparisons include evaluating the prospects under the same assumptions of payload, mission trajectory, and available energy. Missions are divided into three eras of readiness (precursors, era of infrastructure, and era of breakthroughs) as a first step before proceeding to include comparisons of technology advancement rates. Final evaluation "figures of merit" are offered. Preliminary lists of mission architectures and propulsion prospects are provided.

A starship (Enterprise) arrives at a star system in a short period of time to a star system that is tens, hundreds and thousands of light years away from the Earth. This method of making a starship reach a distant star system is skillfully expressed in the movie using images. Unfortunately, however, there is no concrete explanation from the physical point of view of the propulsion method of the starship and the principle of warp navigation, that is, the space propulsion theory and the space navigation theory. This paper is an attempt to explain Star Trek's space navigation by applying the hyper-space navigation theory to the field propulsion theory that the author has published in international conferences and peer-reviewed journals since 1993 [1]. Since this paper mainly describes the concept of the principle, most of the mathematical expressions are reduced. See the references for theoretical formulas [1- 6]. From this, I argue that whereas Ainu identity-making of those who grew up and live in Japan is rooted in Japanese Ainu experience, American Ainu identity-making is largely informed by and rooted in Western Indigenous experience.

    Prototype of Sunken Place: Reading Jordan Peele’s Get Out through Octavia Butler’s Kindred as Black Science Fiction and Speculative Fiction Narratives BRITNEY HENRY Science fiction and speculative fiction have imagined new worlds, species, and technologies that have influenced individuals and societies. These genres have a significant space within American popular culture as “popular culture is woven deeply and intimately into the fabric of our everyday lives. While it may be tempting to imagine such amusements and attachments as apolitical, popular culture reflects and plays a significant role in contouring how we think, feel and act in the world for better and often for worse” (Mueller et al. 70). Science fiction and speculative fiction are not apolitical. These genres within the space of Black culture have illustrated forgotten or distorted historical events within American culture. America has a history of othering the Black body and the alterity of this body comes in the form of systematic oppression and racism. History has inflicted serious trauma and damage mentally and physically on Black bodies. I use “body” instead of “person” here because of the objectification of the body without regards to personhood which Hortense Spillers refers to as, “a territory of cultural and political maneuver” (67). Furthermore, the flesh and body are conceived as being separate. The body can become an object and dehumanized whereas the flesh takes the impact of the pain being inflicted. Black flesh has been abused, sexually degraded, and scientifically exploited throughout history. Mark Dery furthers this notion stating: in a very real sense, [Black people] are the descendants of alien abductees; they inhabit a sci-fi nightmare in which unseen but no less impassable force fields of intolerance frustrate their movements; official histories undo what BRITNEY HENRY is doctoral student of English Literature at The University of Delaware.

    Dr. Carmen Tafolla Summary Bio: Author of more than twenty books and inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters for outstanding literary achievement, Dr. Carmen Tafolla holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Austin and has worked in the fields of Mexican American Studies, bilingual bicultural education, and creativity education for more than thirty- five years. The former Director of the Mexican-American Studies Center at Texas Lutheran (1973-75 and 78-79), she proceeded to pioneer the administration of cultural education projects at Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, KLRN-TV, Northern Arizona University, Scott-Foresman Publishing Company, and to be active in Latino Cultural education and community outreach for the last 35 years. An internationally noted educator, scholar and poet, Dr. Tafolla has been asked to present at colleges and universities throughout the nation, and in England, Spain, Germany, Norway, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand. One of the most highly anthologized of Latina writers, her work has appeared in more than 200 anthologies, magazines, journals, readers, High School American Literature textbooks, kindergarten Big Books, posters, and in the Poetry-in-Motion series installed on city buses. Her children‟s works often celebrate culture and personal empowerment. Among her awards are the Americas Award, the Charlotte Zolotow Award for best children‟s picture book writing, two Tomas Rivera Book Awards, two International Latino Book Awards, an ALA Notable Book, a Junior Library Guild Selection, the Tejas Star Listing, and the Texas 2 by 2 Award. She is the co-author of the first book ever published on Latina Civil Rights leader Emma Tenayuca, That’s Not Fair! Emma Tenayuca’s Struggle for Justice, which Críticas Magazine listed among the Best Children‟s Books of 2008.
