Moncton 299er Sectional Overwhelming Success Attendance Surpasses All Expectations

It all began last year at the Unit 230 Annual General Meeting. Under New Business, Jennifer Huntsman went where no one in Eastern Canada has dared venture before and presented a motion that Acadian Unit 230 sponsor a 0-299 Sectional Tournament. After significant discussion, the motion carried. Jenny, Connie Bartlett solicited the help of Mark Golding and the rest is history. They settled on a two day tournament to be called the CODIAC 299er Sectional and selected dates of Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, 2014. In the past, intermediate-novice players were restricted to 0-49 games, or 0-100 games which were attached to existing tournaments. While occasional games were successful, these events historically drew less than anticipated attendance and some were actually cancelled due to lack of interest. As a result, they disappeared from the local bridge landscape. This made the whole concept of a novice-intermediate section a somewhat risky venture. After all, how could a sectional tournament for new players be a success when previous experience proved that a reasonable size section at regular tournaments was often unattainable. Undaunted, our fearless threesome set about their task. They contacted key bridge personalities in various geographic areas of the Maritimes and solicited their help in promoting their tournament. They arranged for the Moncton Golf and Country Club as a venue, obtained a sanction from the ACBL and went about the countless arrangements necessary to hold a successful sectional tournament. Finally, the weekend arrived. It was approaching game time in Riverview and while no one was making any predictions, it was hoped that an optimistic twenty tables would appear and we were only selling one section. When the smoke cleared, no less than sixty-seven pairs had bought entries at game time. Some frantic last minute table setup and rearranging was necessary but the game got under way smoothly. The evening session dropped all the way down to twenty-eight and a (continued on page 2)

OVERWHELMING SUCCESS (continued from Page 1) half tables. Not all new players have the stamina of the regulars. However, our clients didn`t let us down and twenty-nine teams showed up at 10 am Sunday for our two session Swiss Teams. Total table count for two days, a whopping 120 tables. The goal of this tournament was to provide an opportunity for our new players to experience the enjoyment of a tournament among their peers in a relaxed environment. Most regular players would expect this to mean that this would result in a free-for-all including slow play. On the contrary, there was less slow play than in our regular sectionals. The players, without exception, played to the clock. There was no tension. Food was available between sessions and a panel was held immediately after the Saturday afternoon session featuring Jon Shute, Anne Posch and Mark Golding who fielded questions and gave advice on hands played in the afternoon session to aa appreciative crowd of 70+ players. The feedback from the players was extremely positive and plans are under way for another Intermediate-Novice tournament in 2015. Congratulations to Mark, Jenny and Connie and all their helpers. And a special tip of the hat to those regular players who accompanied their new players at their own expense and acted as caddies and resource people for any questions our new players had. ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ ______

Editorial

Having just returned from a delightfully successful Intermediate-Novice Sectional in Moncton, I must make a few observations. It`s already been suggested to me that it would be a good idea to attach a tournament of this type in some way to an existing tournament. What do I think? I think that this is a terrible idea! We`ve already tried this and failed. I think our new players have sent us a clear message. I think they want to compete against their peers in a relaxed atmosphere without the presence of regular tournament players. I think they don’t want to be in the same building as a regular tournament. I think that they don’t need the tension (real or imagined), intimidation (real or imagined), or unsolicited advice (well-intended or not) that they are afraid they might encounter at a regular tournament (not to mention poor results if they have to play in a stratified field). I don’t think that having new players play off to the side or in their own room at a regular sectional does anything positive to introduce them to tournament bridge. I think that if our new players can play in an Intermediate-Novice tournament and have a positive experience that they will find that the word “tournament” is not associated with experts or unfriendliness in the Maritimes and will play up when they are good and ready. Here is a geographical breakdown of participants in the CODIAC 299er.

ANOTHER AVERAGE By Rod MacKenzie Getting a good at the club is not as easy as it once was. The players are more competitive and are willing to jostle you from comfortable part scores into uncomfortable higher area. An example follows: S Axxx H J D xxx C J109xx S Q S J9xx H 98xx H AQxxx D xxx D Ax C AQxxx C 7x S K10xx H K10x D KQxxx C K The auction was : W N E S 1H 2D 2H 3D 3H 3S 4H 4S All Pass

As South, I reluctantly bypassed my preferred 1S in favour of an obstructive 2D. After each player bid in turn, I could not resist a 3S call. My feelings of joy upon hearing 4H were somewhat diminished by partner’s 4S. Did partner really think I actually had my values? Apparently everyone did, as I was not doubled.

West led the 9H to the Ace, gathering the J (which virtually assured that 4H would fail). East shifted to the C7 to my K and A. I ruffed the CQ return as dummy’s suit became established. I led a S to the Ace as West played the SQ. If that were from QJ doubleton, I would actually make this hand. Not willing to risk it, I led a D from dummy to East’s Ace. I won the D return and now tried to drop the SJ, leaving the following position: xx -- J -- J109 J9 xx Qxxx x -- xxx -- 10 K10 Kxx -- I ruffed the H10 and played C’s as east could score no more than the SJ. If East refused to , I would discards D’s and score my S10 en passant. Minus 50 – just another average.

PARTICIPATE IN THE LONGEST DAY

CALLING ALL BRIDGE PLAYERS June 21 st – The Longest Day Play bridge from sun rise to sunset and Support the Canadian Alzheimer Society Last year was the inception of the ACBL participation in the Longest Day Event and it was met with great success. This year we are at it again. There is a huge Canadian component and ALL money raised in Canada will go to the Canadian Society and in turn to each province. Several clubs in the Maritimes held games supporting the event. Charlottetown, PEI was very ambitious – and again this year they have a full schedule beginning at 6:00 am with an open pair game, followed by a 9:30am Master/Rookie game, 12:00 Open pairs, a 3:30 Team game with wine and pizza and finally a 7:00pm pairs game ending at sunset. They have included sandwiches for lunch, 50/50 draws and have lots of door prizes. Everyone across the Island plans on attending at least one session. Last year Charlottetown raised $2700.00 for PEI Alzheimer Society. The Bridge Studio in Halifax will follow their format from last year but their first game at 6:00AM will be a warm-up online (Bridge Base – please check in with Trisha Fleet to participate in the private game). The Bridge Studio’s first live game will be at 8:00am and a new 12 board (90 minute) game will start every 1 hour & 45 minutes (8:00; 9:45; 11:30am; 1:15; 3:00; 4:45; 6:30 & 8:15pm). This year the Bridge Studio will have from 12:30 – 5:00 for those so inclined and a Bridge Introduction class 9:45-12:15. There will lots of food for between sessions - morning muffins, hotdogs for lunch and lasagna for supper, donating all the proceeds to the Nova Scotia Alzheimer Society and the Canadian Alzheimer Society. The Bridge Studio contributed over $1250.00 in 2013. Other clubs also held a session or two of the 2013 Longest Day games – including Bridge on the Edge in NL, Edmundston Duplicate in NB, and Halifax Bridge World, NS. Check to see if a club in your area is hosting some games for the Longest Day! Let’s hope all of our Maritime clubs are able to surpass last year’s donations. So get your pledge sheets out and help support this fantastic event. Saturday June 21 st – Sunrise – Sunset – PLAY BRIDGE

Leo Weniger 902-425-3392 District 1 Director [email protected] 504-1333 South Park Street Halifax NS B3J 2K9 Canada

DISTRICT DIRECTOR'S REPORT April, 2014 The Delightful Big D The Spring NABC was held at the Dallas Sheraton and adjoining convention centre in downtown Dallas. While there were some temperature problems, the tournament was well run, with excellent hospitality. There were lots of nearby restaurants or ones that could easily be reached by the DART transportation system . Everything was king sized including the skyscrapers, but I only saw 2 cowboy hats! Attendance was just under 9891 tables which was less than the last Dallas NABC (held before the economic downturn). One can't miss event at future NABCs is the opening party on Friday night. Nice desserts and a great band playing 70s and 80s music and nice food. A very sad item to report was the sudden death of District 1 Tournament Director, Henry Cukoff. Henry always did what he thought was right for the players and was well liked and appreciated by those who got to know him, including his fellow directors . He was a fine player in the 60's and probably would have risen to great heights if he had chosen to play rather than direct. He was also an expert on sports and a rabid baseball fan . He will be greatly missed, especially by the tournament organizers and players in District 1. On page 5 of this issue , I have included a bridge article by Rod MacKenzie, my favourite and long time bridge partner, who is acknowledged as one of the finest players produced in the Atlantic Provinces. Thank you, Rod. I am looking for other contributors . All I ask is that it be at most 1 page long and that it be done in Word . Next one would be needed for my report after the Las Vegas NABC which is in July (please book your hotel room in LV ASAP, to avoid disappointment). I am also listing major results by District 1 players at the NABC. The list is at the end of this report. Highlights of the Dallas Board of Directors Meeting Elections : Rand Pinsky was re-elected Treasurer for a one year term . Appointments : were made to the Hall of Fame, Competitions and Conventions, Ethical Oversight and ACBL Disciplinary Committees, and the ACBL Laws Commission. NABC site : The Marriott Marquis in Atlanta was selected for the Summer 2018 and Fall 2023 NABCs. These NABCs must follow standard NABC schedule for starting times. Membership was down 48 as of end of February. Regional attendance was down 8% with 4 fewer regional, but average table count was up 13%. Sectionals were down 10% and average table count was down 6% with 2 less sectionals. STACs table count was down 25% with 3 less STACs and poor weather, but only 5% on average . Finance : 2013 net income from operations was $200,740. IT : A redesigned Website page should be launched in June. Table count : in 2013 was 3,128,529 of which 942,040 was from online games. Jan 2013 vs January 2014 was decreased by 2.65%, some partly due to bad weather.

Grass Roots FUNd games raised $158,841 from Jan 1, 2013 to Jan 30, 2014 . ACBL Score+ is still behind schedule and $200,000 was committed for its completion and they're still aiming for roll out sometime in 2014 . Longest Day : will be held again with a goal of 275 clubs participating and raising $750,000 . Strategic Planning: On line learn to play bridge is being tested and a soft rollout of it is underway later in the year . On line partnership desk for NABCs and Regionals is being developed . Tournament Director Structure and training program is continuing under leadership of Sylvia Hardin, HR Director. A Survey has been done to understand why people leave ACBL and identify ways to retain members. Motions approved: -The proposed play schedule (for NABC events) for the three annual NABCs will be implemented in 2015 on a trial basis, subject to Board approval of any new events. -Youth and Junior Entries: Juniors under 26 who are full time students and Juniors under 21 will be entitled to $10 per session coupons that can be used for any event . Juniors under 19 will be granted free plays for each sessi9n of regionally rated events . Juniors under 26, named to represent Zone 2, for NABCs occurring before the World Championship that they were named to, will receive free plays when playing with members of their team or members of another team representing Zone 2 . -A club that charges a membership fee may conduct an open game, but the game must be open to all ACBL members . The Club may allow its own members to play at a reduced fee . The fee for a non-club member may be as much as 100% more than a member's entry fee. I sponsored this motion. A number of other motions were defeated or deferred District News Visitors: I am pleased that ACBL Pres ident, Phyllis Harlan will be vis iting the CanAt and the CanAm; CEO Robert Hartman will be attending the CanAt, and Director of Human Resources, Sylvia Hardin (who is working on a _ project re: Tournament Directors) will be at the Kingston Regional and the CanAm . I hope you will make them welcome . District Meeting: Delegates are invited to the District 1 Annual Meeting which will be held after the afternoon session at the CanAm in Montreal on Saturday, August 16th. : The District Finals will be held in Kingston as part of the Split Regional in May. Conditions of Contest are the same as in the past, but the MP limits might have changed. Please look at the Tournament flyer or schedule for detail. The Longest Day: We hope that all clubs will participate in this program which is a fund raiser for the Alzheimer's Society. All funds raised afte r expenses will go to the Canadian Society . ACBL's event was acknowledged as one of 2 signature events by the American Alzheimer's Society. We hope to raise a lot more than last year . Play Nice: This program to promote Zero Tolerance has been well received by clubs . Additional posters are available for clubs from ACBL. Thanks to the Montreal Unit for getting it translated into French. We are working with ACBL Headquarters to get French posters printed, and we hope to get them to all francophone clubs in the District. Golden (and Platinum) Performances in Dallas: The following is a listing of excellent achievements by District 1 players. I am listing the top 25 placings in NABC events (2+ days) and 1st or 2nd in Regional (2 session+ events) . As I am doing this manually, I apologize in advance if I missed someone . If you e-mail me, I will correct this in my next report). 52 District 1 players earned Master points in Dallas .

Gordon Way, Kingston, NS Carmel Anderson, North Sydney, NS John Muise, Yarmouth, NS Lloyd Mitchell, Truro, NS Henry Cukoff, Montreal, QC

REMINDER TO OUR PLAYERS

It is important that we as Canadians support the Canadian Bridge Federation. Your CBF dues are only 12.00 per year and they support Canadian Bridge and Canadian Bridge players. So when you are paying your ACBL dues be sure to include your Canadian Bridge Federation dues. You will see that it is listed separately under the ACBL dues as well as an Educational Fund donation. The ACBL does not include the CBF dues automatically because of a legal technicality. Editors note: While it is very important to be an ACBL member, it is, in my opinion, more important to be a member of our own National Bridge Organization. ☺☺☺☺☺
