Last Time Out: The Cowgirl basketball team overcame a 19-point second half defi cit and pulled to within Scouting the Lobos: The Cowgirls return home one, but fell short in a tough 80-75 loss against Utah State, on Saturday night in Logan. Gerald Mattinson Associate Head Basketball Coach, Weber State '81 Gerald Mattinson enters his 11th season on the Cowgirl coaching staff and his seventh as an associate head coach. He began his college basketball career as a student-athlete at Casper College for head coach Oscar “Swede” Ericson. While there, he was a First Team All-American and All-Region selection in 1978. Mattinson then moved onto a three-year career at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He earned All-Conference honors twice during his career for head coach Neil McCarthy. A two-time Academic All-American selection, he graduated from Weber State with a bachelor’s of science degree in business education in 1981. He completed a master’s of sports science degree from the United States Sports Academy in 1988 and earned his principal endorsement from the University of Wyoming. Mattinsons’ professional coaching career began at Weber State as a graduate assistant coach with the men’s basketball program during the 1981-82 season. From 1982-1987, he was the head boy’s basketball coach at Rock Springs High School. He earned Wyoming State Coach of the Year honors and was named Conference Coach of the Year twice. From 1987-90, Mattinson was an assistant men's coach at Western Wyo- ming Community College. He was elevated to an Assistant Athletics Director and the Head Men’s Basketball Coach in 1991 and held the position until 1998. For the 1998-99 season, he became an assistant with the women’s program for one year. Mattinson had been a business education teacher at Rock Springs High School since 1982 before taking the position of Principal at East Junior High School in June of 2001. Mattinson, and his wife, Carey are the parents of three children, stepson Morgan Splichal, stepdaughter Tiffany Splichal and son Ashton.

Katie Kern Assistant Basketball Coach, New Mexico '99 Katie Kern begins her eighth season with the Cowgirl basketball program. She began her college basketball career as a student-athlete at the University of New Mexico under former head coach Don Flanagan. A four-year letterwinner for the Lobos, she was a First Team All-Western Athletic Conference selection in 1999, while being named to the WAC All- Tournament Team (1998) and the All-Newcomer Team (1996). Over those years, the team had a combined record of 82-39 overall and 36-22 in the WAC, which included a 24-7 record, a 12-2 conference mark and a fi rst place fi nish in the league during the 1998-99 season. Kern still ranks among the top 15 in school history in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. A three-time Academic All-WAC selection, she earned her bach- elor’s degree in communications in 1999 and her master’s degree in physical education and sport administration in 2003 both from the University of New Mexico. Following her career, she played two seasons of professional basketball in Germany and Luxembourg. Kerns’ professional coaching career begin at the University of New Mexico as a graduate assistant coach from 2001-2003. She assisted in several aspects of the program including on campus recruiting, fi lm exchange, game day operations and organizing all recruiting mail-outs. In her time there as well, the team was selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament twice including a trip the the Sweet 16 in 2003. She then moved on to the University of Alaska Anchorage as an assistant coach, where she was for three years. During that time, she was involved in the day to day operations of the program including academics, assisting with practices, recruiting and scouting.

Mike Petrino Assistant Basketball Coach, Montana State Billings '99 Mike Petrino enters his third season with the Cowgirl basketball program. Petrino comes to Wyoming from Central Catholic High School in Portland, Ore. For fi ve years, he served as the head varsity boys basketball coach. During that time, he amassed a 97-37 overall record. His teams won fi ve consecutive Mount Hood Conference Championships, made three Oregon State Activities Association State Tournament Appearances and two third place trophies. Central Catholic was recognized by the OSAA in 2009 and 2010 for having one of the top team grade point averages. In fi ve years as head coach, Petrino had nine players continue their basketball careers in college. For his efforts, he was selected the Mount Hood Conference Coach of the Year three-times and the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Coach in 2008 and 2011. In 2010, Petrino was invited to coach at the Nike Global Challenge which fea- tures some of the best high school players in the country. Previous to that, he was the Junior Varsity and Assistant Varsity Coach from 2001- 2006 at Central Catholic. Off the court Petrino, along with Jeff and Bev Heller, started the inaugural David Heller Hoopfest in 2006. The event honors David Heller, a former player for Central Catholic, who died one week before starting his fi rst varsity game of an enlarged heart. All proceeds from the event go to the David Heller Foundation, which helps fund cardiac screenings for high school athletes. A native of Montana, he earned his degree in secondary education in 1999 from Montana State Billings.
