LAST WEEK'S MEETING DGE PHILIP ARCHER & PP PHIL ENDERSBEE Last week's Zoom Meeting was presented by our PP Phil Endersbee, Captain of Groups updating us on ”The outcome of our Member care initiative” and DGE Philip Archer with the topic “The road ahead…can our Rotary emerge stronger from COVID-19? Yes we can”. This meeting was recorded and can be located on website: Meetings/Events/YouTube.

REFLECTION from PETER DAKIN "Many thanks Reg. Good afternoon Rotarians and Guests and of course my fellow BOMBER (see note below) supporters .

Our Club office bearers and Manager Jo are to be applauded for their wonderful commitment in terms of Member engagement and digital initiatives to avoid social isolation at this incredible time in our history!

President Kevin’s email message yesterday was inspirational providing positive motivation for us all.

The fabric of our Club and Rotary as a whole has been tested for a number of years with declining memberships and it is critical that we try and arrest this decline.

How often have we heard “ I’m too busy to be involved with Rotary” ? This type of response has generally been driven by the expectations of businesses and employers and financial reward .

We have all had time to reflect over recent weeks and Easter , on our true family and social values and engagement with families , neighbours and loved ones .

I feel there will be a fantastic opportunity going forward for our Club to maintain and build our Membership providing viable options in terms of Luncheon attendance at the Sofitel and /or a virtual weekly lunch.

Rotary Melbourne Corona Fighting Fund is an excellent initiative and the concept of donating an amount for lunch that suits individuals financial position, may have great appeal in the future and encourage membership retention .

Thank you and I will now pass over to President Kevin for the Loyal Toast." Apologies Peter, but I took editorial license to alter your word: "DEMONS" to "BOMBERS"!

MESSAGE RE. ZOOM MEETINGS Message from Robert Read to Jo Mavros: "Great turnout yesterday! Thank you for the Excel format in alpha order, does make it easier. It is amazing 100 individual images in sync at the same time. Turn off the mute and we have a tower of babel. Get’s better each meeting I think. I am now able to put faces to names (the newer ones that is.)" Zoom meetings are gaining momentum for us! CLUB NEWS PRESIDENT KEVIN'S MESSAGE President Kevin's Message 15 April, 2020

While our physical doors may be temporarily closed as we all do our bit to keep the community a safer place, Rotary Melbourne is building a stronger digital presence to maintain Member engagement and deliver our humanitarian service projects.

I especially want to thank our office bearers, our committee chairs, our team leaders, our office manager and all Members who have keep our Rotary wheel turning. Our Captain of Groups has initiated Member Care through the good work of all ten Group Captains. There's no denying that the last few weeks have given us all time to pause and reflect on the changing landscape of our country in response to COVID-19. This pandemic has reshaped our society and transformed the very nature of our daily lives in ways we never saw coming. Whilst remining positive for the outcome, it will be a different world and our challenge is to make to it better.

Join us on our social media channels so that you don’t miss out, as we work on bringing some of your favourite elements of the Club experience directly to you, at home. I look forward to your participation in tomorrow’s Weekly Lunch Meeting at 1pm with dial-in Zoom or phone-in access details being as follows: Topic: Rotary Melbourne Weekly Meeting Time: Apr 22, 2020 13:00 (Melb) Join Zoom meeting https://zoom.us/j/911538359?pwd=Z3NjNytXYVVWSnJDU0NlV2hxc1Rhdz09 Meeting ID: 911 538 359 Password: 036747 OR Dial in by phone from your location: +61 3 7018 2005 Vic. & Tas, +61 8 7150 1149 SA, NT & WA, +61 2 8015 6011 NSW & Qld

Finally and to quote from Queen Elizabeth’s recent address to the nation, “we will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again – take comfort that while we have more still to endure, better days will return”. Stay safe, stay well and stay connected, Warmest regards, Kevin F Sheehan President Rotary Melbourne

R100 PROJECT IS UNDERWAY Mary and I hope that you will provide this link via our website to anyone you think may be interested in working with the Rotary Safe Families Program. The Program is designed as a "preventative" program to inform Rotarians and the public in identifying anyone at risk of violence to women, children and the elderly.

We were very appreciative to have received the generous time and support of: Mal Walden (former Channel 7 and 10 Newsreader) Gerard Mansour (Commissioner for Senior Victorians) Tammy Lobato (former Victorian politician and victim of violence) Jenny Blakely (Manager Seniors Rights ) Joe Tucci (Chairman Australian Childhood Foundation) Professor Catharine Lumby (Academic, Author and Journalist)

It was a fascinating day preparing the presenter and watching the filming and autocue system. Photo shows Sean Meltzer with his filming team. Did you know that to settle down flyaway hair, you spray a tissue and wipe down over hair!!!

Plans are being discussed to create another film which will focus on violence to men. This is early days but Rotary Safe Families believes it to be necessary addition to its work. Thanks to Graham O'Donnell for this planned initiative.

ANJ BARKER FILM SUCCESS Further details are embargoed at this stage. The St Kilda Film Festival is one of the top Film Festivals in Australia.

Kerry said: "It is a real honor to be included in this event."

The Story of Anj Barker - Part 2 Kerry Kornhauser and Phil Cornish provided a report on a joint initiative between Welfare of the Young and the Family Violence Working Group late 2019.

Rotary Melbourne supported the work of Melbourne East Police teaching adolescents about respectful relationships. This initiative was called “LOVE BiTES”.

The LOVE BiTES program included a video about the plight of Anj Barker, a 16 year old who suffered horrendous, life threatening injuries from the hand of her “boy friend”. The video was made 15 years ago and over the years, many of the students asked: “What has happened to Anj?”

Via the Melbourne East Police and NAPCAN, a request was made to film a follow up video about Anj’s life. As Anj was a NAB employee, a request was made for NAB to assist with the financial support together with Rotary Melbourne. Kerry Kornhauser facilitated NAB to totally support the video and ROAR Digital, who produced the video.

'I AM ALIVE!' "I am alive!

How are you going? I hope that you and your family are well and not terribly affected by what the world has come to. We can only hope and pray that we will come out stronger after this is all over.

One of the last few times we were together in Melbourne, I remember you pulling me aside and reminding me to send an "update" in a couple of months. Clearly, I did not hold up my end of the deal. To say that the transition back to America was challenging is saying it lightly.

I was hired as a high school mathematics teacher at HLV High School in Victor, IA, a small town of about 800 people. I teach six math classes and up until school was closed, was working around 65 hours a week. (School literally consumed me from mid-August until mid-March.) I'm hoping that my hard work will pay off next year.

On the eve of 15 March, the Governor of Iowa recommended that schools close for the next four weeks to mitigate the spread of the virus. As of Friday prior, schools in Iowa are closed for the remainder of the school year, which generally goes until the end of May. The materials that I have prepared have been posted online for student access, but it is entirely voluntary. Only 8-10 out of my 60 students are diligently taking advantage of the material.

I was looking forward to seeing all of my Aussie friends at the RI Convention in Honolulu, but alas, we will need to reunite another time.

On a lighter note, I am now a Rotarian! Back in February, I joined a club about an hour away from Victor. It is the DG's club and it meets in the evenings, which is convenient for me. (Only one other club in the district meets in the evenings.) Our club is in the process of merging with another, so I can't tell you the name of our new club because we haven't figured it out yet! Everyone is very friendly and I am looking forward to working with them at events and projects.

On Friday morning, Iowans woke up to a blanket of snow. Good thing I had a pair of R100 socks to keep my toes warm!

MESSAGE FROM VICTORIAN GOVERNOR Message from the , Her Excellency the Hon. Linda Dessau AC and Mr Anthony Howard AM, QC.

"It has certainly been a difficult start to the year, with parts of our State so heavily affected by bush fires and now the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19.

First and foremost, we care about the health and well-being of all Victorians and hope that those associated with our Patronages are safe and well cared for. We all need to stay across the advice of our health authorities, which are constantly updated and can be found at www.dhhs.vic.gov.au and www.health.gov.au.

We have seen the anxiety in the community caused by COVID-19, and its effects. Of course, anxiety like this is understandable at a time of such uncertainty. But it is important, now more than ever, to remain calm and to work together.

It is a time too for gratitude to all those who are working so hard to look after our medical and emergency needs, to care for the vulnerable, to keep essential services running and to respond to this unfolding situation.

We are conscious that many of our Patronages are amongst those groups. We express to them the gratitude felt by all Victorians. We would be pleased if you would convey that to your members for us.

We are conscious too that a number of our Patronages will be celebrating particular anniversaries or achievements during this period, when large groups of people will be unable to gather together. Others will have members who are likely to feel acutely the cancellation of their normal events and activities. That, and the social distancing practices now in place, will often bring a sense of isolation. Each person, each organisation, will experience these upheavals in different ways. Our thoughts are with them all. Although for now Government House will not be able to welcome guests in the usual way, we remain as eager as ever to communicate with Victorians across the community. How lucky we are to live in an age when we have technology to assist us.

With that in mind, we encourage you to keep in touch and to write to the office if there is any way we can connect with your organisation, now or in the future, remembering that many engagements can be conducted through online technology. Requests can be made to [email protected].

Please take care of each other. This is a time when we all need to check on family, neighbours, the elderly, workmates who are working off-site - anyone who might be alone or doing it tough."
