Let us show you just how easy, flexible and effective your charitable giving can be. We can help you with the details. Contact us at 419.241.5049 to start making your community a better place. Dear Friends, ne of the most enduring traits of humanity is the desire to be a part of something bigger than ourselves; ideally, something that will outlive us and that will leave the world a better O place than it was when we arrived. We do many things at the Toledo Community Foundation. We help individuals, families and organizations establish funds for causes about which they care deeply. We provide diligent stewardship of those assets to ensure their stability and fruitfulness for years to come. We vet Scott A. Estes and assist nonprofit organizations that benefit from the generosity of TCF donors and supporters. CHAIR And we provide leadership to identify particular needs of the community and convene those with the resources and expertise to address them.

But behind all these things is the one goal we all share: to be a vital, dynamic contributor to our world, and to create a better tomorrow for everyone who comes after us.

“Creating tomorrows together” is the theme of our annual report this year — and in the pages that follow, we honor the Foundation’s many participants who have supported this mission. We invite you to explore the philanthropic vision of two families who established funds with the Foundation, and to learn about a few of the many organizations that have served the community Keith Burwell PRESIDENT through Foundation grants.

The ways in which Foundation contributors have benefitted others could fill volumes. But one unique to TCF is the ability to assemble time, talent and treasure from multiple stakeholders to tackle difficult community challenges.

Our feature story on pages 2-3 illustrates one such challenge: the opioid crisis, and its effect on future generations. We’re excited about the life-changing impact the Chrysalis program has had for drug-dependent mothers-to-be, and the millions of dollars it has saved in caring for drug- dependent infants whose futures are often bleak. Its potential benefit to other women and children, made possible in part by TCF funding of the program’s expansion, is truly beyond calculation.

Support from people like you has allowed Toledo Community Foundation to make these things possible. For 45 years, we’ve been able to create tomorrows together for countless members of our community — and with your continued support, we all can look forward to an ever-brighter future.

Sincerely,

Scott A. Estes Keith Burwell CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT

With no children or close relatives who might personally benefit from their estate, it’s not surprising that the Fletchers looked to TCF as a resource to accomplish their estate planning goals. “I knew of the Foundation through my friendship with the former executive director, Pam Howell-Beach. We worked together for a number of years as members of the Toledo chapter of Zonta, an international executive and professional women’s service organization,” Pam recalls. The Fletchers had given some thought about how to structure their fund. “We didn’t think single one-time bequests would be as useful to the organizations we support as a continuing stream of revenue,” said Pam. Jim agreed, noting, “With our Fund, every year when distributions are made, we will be remembered as benefactors by those organizations we care about.” They both appreciated how convenient it Jim and Pam Fletcher was to establish their fund. “The amount of our estate wouldn’t justify the cost and Securing the Future for Others effort of setting up an endowment fund on our own — but with a Toledo Community Foundation fund, the work was done for us. im and Pam Fletcher both had the same goal in mind when it came The whole process was easy. t’s been a long journey for Joe and Judith Conda and their daughter, Susan Conda, from their family’s I beginning in Burlington, New Jersey to their involvement in philanthropy in . Joe started working after high school, but did not begin college until six years later. While holding a full-time job and studying at night, he earned his bachelor’s degree at age 34. In 1969 he became employed at Brockway Glass which was sold to Owens-Illinois in 1988. The family then moved to Perrysburg. He worked his way up the ranks, eventually being named president of O-I’s Healthcare Packaging Company, as well as a corporate officer of the company. “When we were kids, both of our families had very little money, but we didn’t know differently,” recalls Judith. “No one in either family had money to give away.” “The concept of philanthropy was foreign to us,” added Joe. “In preparation for retirement, we first met with an estate attorney in 2005. He told me that we might want to consider giving some of our money away. That was a hard concept for me to digest — it took a while.” Joe admitted that, at first, he was even more reluctant to embrace working with the Toledo Community Foundation. “We were a bit nervous about it. It actually took us about seven years to give it a try — and then we finally did set up a donor advised fund. But we didn’t make any grants for some time.” continued on page 6

5 Susan, Judith and Joe Conda at the Education was the initial driving interest for Judith; special needs in particular. Her developmentally handicapped older sister inspired her to pursue a career in special education. In fact, their family’s first significant gifts were to support scholarships for students majoring in Intervention Services at Bowling Green State University.

A new philanthropic focus It wasn’t long, however, before the Condas sensed that their efforts were not focused. Joe’s second retirement in 2016 was the catalyst for a more strategic approach to the family’s giving. They all agreed that literacy in all its forms should be the major focus. For them, “literacy” means more than the ability to interpret the printed page. “It means understanding yourself, your community, and your world,” said Judith. “That’s why so much of our giving now leans toward ‘helping others navigate their world.’” “Under this broad umbrella,” said Susan, “we have two strategic goals: investing in the community and positively impacting as many lives Toledo Zoo’s ZooTeens work to beautify as possible.” Judith added, “We now have four distinct criteria. First, a the banks of the . project has to be sustainable — we want the endeavor to last. Second, we want to support programming, not capital projects. Third, desired outcomes must be clearly defined, driving toward positive change. And fourth, there must be accountability — where resources are being used and how they are promoting the objectives.” continued from page 5 A Conda family project that typifies their strategic orientation to giving The Condas were no strangers to generosity, though, having already is the Toledo Zoo’s ZooTeens, a 17-year-old program that started with given much of their time and talent to the community. BSIF creates a safe environment for not only socialization, but for physical activity and personal growth. For the families, BSIF is a resource and support group to help through the challenges caregivers encounter raising a special needs child. The Foundation supports this program which provides an opportunity to take the focus from medical needs and 18 allows the children to just “be a kid” by experiencing a team sport.
