Beloved members of Old St Patrick's, In order to make our goal, I really need your help. Could I ask you to Several years ago I mentioned that I would do my best to limit the prayerfully consider a pledge to this Annual Catholic Appeal/Old St. times I appeal to your generosity to three: Our Old St. Pat's Sunday Giv- Patrick's Relief for the coming year? I plan on personally pledging $1k ing, the Children at the Crossroads Foundation for our students in our to this appeal. If every member makes a pledge, we can easily make school, and #nally the Annual Catholic Appeal for the larger church of our goal and have a nice surplus to use for our national and interna- Chicago. tional outreach e!orts.

Well, today is one of those three "asks" that I am con#dent about Thank you again and again for always being so generous and creating making. such a hopeful experience of church here at Old St. Pat's. Have a great weekend! A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call from Cardinal Cupich asking me on behalf of Old St Patrick's Church if we would do our best with Annual Appeal this year. He's very passionate about it, which I respect and admire. I told him we'd give it our best shot in the hopes of hitting our church goal for the Archdiocese which is $170,000.

The Annual Catholic Appeal is a pledge that we can make over the Father Tom Hurley course of the coming year. The great part about this is that if we make our goal of $170k, anything and everything we pledge above that remains with Old St. Pat's.

Because we have recently established the "Old St. Patrick's Relief," I would like to dedicate any funds we raise past our archdiocesan goal to the OSPR in order that we might strengthen our outreach response to areas like the catholic parish and school in Beaumont Texas which we promised to help after last summer's devastating Hurricane Harvey.

Our Annual Catholic Appeal brings us together to live out our responsibility in that community of discipleship. By each of us joining in the Appeal together, we sustain Catholic schools and parishes in need, support programs of religious education, ministerial formation, and many initiatives for the protection of life and the promotion of peace and justice. Through the Annual Appeal, we also support the e!orts of Catholic Relief Services which care for people across the globe who struggle and su!er because of natural disasters and the ravages of war. Ware all connected to one another in Jesus as his disciples, and we can express that connection through our support of the Appeal.

How Do We Heal? Every Sunday afternoon and every Monday evening here at Old St. Pat's, two small groups gather to pray, to learn, to talk, and to journey the road of faith together. The program is called JustFaith, and this formative eight-month journey nurtures a passion and thirst for a compassionate commitment to justice in our church, community, and world. We face the di!cult conversations and discernment of exactly how we will respond to injustices like mass incarceration, poverty, human tra!cking, and environmental racism as people of faith. And no, we don't "gure everything out or "nd all the answers. We sometimes leave sessions still confused, uncomfortable, even angry and distraught. Yet the Spirit keeps on nudging us along, week after week, to witness more of the human experience locally and globally. Our JustFaith group is currently reading Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, which focuses on the ugly realities of mass incarceration, especially for people who are on death row. This past weekend we visited Fr. Dave Kelly and Tommie, Shawn, and Jonathan - three young adults who are leading programs at Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation Center. The center supports young people and families a#ected by the criminal justice system and allows space for healing, expression, hope, and trust. Below are three poems from Making Choices , a publication from Kolbe House, the jail ministry of the Archdiocese. Young people incarcerated here in Chicago and across the state submit writings from their heart with tenderness, anger, and honesty. May we work towards a world where we address harm in restorative, merciful, and accountable ways.
