Message from the Head of School

We are now in full flow of the academic year.

Last weekend was Remembrance Sunday, such an important day to pay our respects to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our young people could have a positive future. To celebrate this, the school took part in many activities (more from Mrs McAulay later in this newsletter).

This week is Anti-Bullying week. There are assemblies on during this week and students are also doing activities in tutor time on the theme of respect.

I would like to congratulate three of our Year 9 students, Molly Cadman, Frida Domoney-Gardner and Imogen Bowers, who along with some students at other schools, created a video for schools to use to highlight the importance of anti- bullying. You can view the video by opening the following link:- https://www.eagleradio.co.uk/news/local-news/2733543/anti-bullying-week-youre- strong-youre-beautiful/

Also congratulations and well done to the following students who have now reached 50 or more commendations since the beginning of term:.

On Tuesday, 20th November at 6.30pm we will be running a safeguarding evening particularly around grooming. This will take place in the main hall and last for 45 minutes. We will be joined by Téa Staegemann, speaker from the Breck Foundation. Further details will be sent separately via a Parent Mail.

Later in this academic year, all students will be learning about keeping safe online. During these lessons students will watch a short video about what happened to Breck Bednar. This video, which was produced by four police forces, will be shown to parents on the safeguarding evening.

Thank you for all your support.

R Mitchell Glebelands Newsletter 13 November REMEMBRANCE

A selection of Glebelands students joined Mr Mitchell and Ms McAulay along with students and staff from the other Schools at the War memorial on Friday the 9th of November for an event to mark the 100 year centenary since the Armistice of 1918. As a collective our local schools wanted to mark the event respectfully and also to visit the new Cranleigh memorial garden where we read a selection of poetry. Students were selected either because they were part of School Council, part of the Year 11 senior team or because they have been helping in the History department making poppy memorials. Thanks to those students who represented the school so wonderfully.

Year 9 History Ambassadors have been busy for the last few weeks handmaking poppies for door plaques. Each plaque commemorates one person from the Cranleigh War memorial across the conflicts. You will see some of them if you visit Reception in the next few weeks.

A number of events took place in the village around Remembrance this weekend. Apart from the Schools Memorial Peace Walk event on the Friday, Year 10 students were involved in a Drama performance at the Cranleigh Arts Centre on the Friday evening, thanks to Mrs Durward and Mr Ransom for their work with the students on that.

Emily Wickenden in Year 10 also represented the school along with Mr Mitchell on Saturday the 10th of November at 11am at the official opening of the Cranleigh Memorial garden where she did a marvellous job reciting the Vera Brittain poem "Perhaps", thanks to Mrs Green for her work with Emily in rehearsing for that important event.

Finally a number of students took part at the Sunday Remembrance church service, parade and 2 minute silence in the village on Sunday the 11th of November. Thank you to all those who took part in that.

YEAR 7

Year 7 have made a very positive start to their first term at Glebelands. For many, it has been a steep learning curve adjusting to the routines of secondary school but I hope that they now feel settled and happy in their classes. They are consistently smartly dressed, keen and eager to learn and well behaved. I have been extremely pleased to see students participating in extra-curricular activities such as Choir, Orchestra, Netball/Football and Badminton Clubs. These clubs provide opportunities to develop skills and understanding, to make new friends and perhaps represent the school. Students are rewarded for their hard work, contribution and achievement throughout their school day. As I write, the total number of commendations achieved by the year 7’s is over 1300. Alongside this at the end of each half term, students are recognised for their effort and achievement in their subjects. Below are the successful students from their first half term at Glebelands.

YEAR 8

I am very pleased that most students made a great start back to the term after the half term holiday. I have lots of positive comments from staff about the work ethic of students in general. We do use the student journal as a way of communicating with you, as a reminder please can you check journals every week for reminders and sign them? Please also look out for notes about purchasing items such as sketchbooks for Art, I am aware there are a few students who do not have them yet.

With regards to school sanctions, I do keep track of detentions being issued by staff in journals. We would appreciate it if you could also have those checks in place at home checking your child’s and support your child by making sure homework is done on time. This is the biggest culprit when it comes to detentions being issued across Year 8. Good homework routines established this year will really help when the workload increases over the years ahead.

Please note students must be on time to morning register. If they dawdle, they will be marked late and sanctions will follow.

With Year 8 reports being uploaded to Insight in the next few weeks please also check that you have the correct details to access your account. Paper copies of reports will not be issued. If you don’t please contact the school office for details on how to access Insight.

Once again this year we are participating in the Christmas Shoebox appeal where students assemble a shoebox full of useful items for a child in Romania. We have spoken with the students in assembly and would ask you to look for useful items, shoeboxes and gift wrap at home and please send them in with your child next week please.

I would like to say a really big well done to 50 students in Year 8 who have managed to dodge the various ailments that we experienced in the first half term and who still have 100% attendance! Certificates will be issued in assembly to them next week.

Subject prizes were issued at the half term break by Heads of Department for students who had demonstrated excellent effort or amazing achievement in their subject areas. Students received a certificate and a small prize from me to say well done!

Congratulations to those listed below and as I said in assembly these prizes are all up for grabs for this half term now!

Finally Year 8 will be in charge of the next mufti- day for Children in Need which will be on Friday 16th of November. We ask students to bring in £1 donation to wear their own clothes for the day. Each Year 8 tutor group will also be doing a bake sale the week of the mufti- day to try to raise more cash by selling their delicious baking at break times. We would ask if you would kindly send your child in with nut free goodies that can be sold on the day.

Glebelands Newsletter 13 November YEAR 8 FRENCH & SPANISH FASHION SHOW

This year’s Year 8 French and Spanish Fashion Show was once again a huge success. Students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to strut their stuff on the catwalk and their language skills were fantastic! The Year 8s carefully prepared their scripts in their MFL lessons and were given the opportunity to show off all the new skills they have been learning this year. The Fashion show was a brilliant way for students to practise their speaking skills, improve their confidence and show collaboration. Here are a couple of testimonials from our year 8 students:

‘I loved the Fashion show! It was so much fun dressing up and the music and atmosphere was great.’

‘I was nervous at first about speaking and walking down the catwalk in front of everyone, but once I did it, I wanted to do it again!’

YEAR 9

Year 9 have made a good start to their final year of ‘Key Stage 3’. This year will see them choose their options and prepare for moving onto their GCSE’s in Year 10. More information will be distributed after Christmas in the run up to the Year 9 Information Evening in February.

Our first Celebration Assembly saw students recognised across the curriculum for their effort and achievement in lessons. Well done to those students!

Year 9 had a great experience at the Careers Fair on Wednesday 7th November exploring a huge variety of opportunities and options to pursue after they have sat their GCSE’s at Glebelands. Many came back with freebies and goodies and experience of trying new skills and discovering pathways into different careers.

Finally, I wanted to say a huge well done to those students who have become involved in extra-curricular opportunities. The choir, orchestra and percussion clubs are now up and running, the Year 9 Netball, Basketball and Football teams have all had fixtures this term, with the Year 9 boys winning their Football match against Woolmer Hill. Well done to all students involved in clubs running across the school.

YEAR 9 CAREERS FAIR – Epsom Downs

Year 9 students travelled to Epsom Downs on 7th November to attend their very first Careers Fair. It was massively well rated and students have made the most of the opportunity by fully engaging in the activities on offer. To give you a flavour, some students delivered babies, others played monopoly and some even broadcast the weather on a television screen.

Students have embraced the opportunity to discuss future careers options and have been very keen to talk to as many colleges and companies representatives as possible. Staff and school Governors alike were impressed by the positive attitude displayed by Year 9 students.

Year 10 have made a fabulous start to their GCSE courses at Glebelands and we have received positive reports from College about those students who have opted to do a college course. This year we have 17 students who attend college once a week on a variety of courses, such as Construction, Business and Media, Hair and Beauty and Childcare.

Each half term we hold a Celebration Assembly to recognise those students who had made a concerted effort with their schoolwork and those who had achieved well in lessons.

PROGRESS DAYS

You may have noticed from the calendar (or heard at an Information Evening) that we will not be running Progress Day this year. Historically, this has been held on the last Thursday in November but after parental, student and staff feedback, we have decided that the benefits of the individual discussions do not outweigh the missing of a school day. In its place, we will be holding three Progress Review Meetings for Years 7-10 over the course of the year with the first one scheduled for Weds 28th November. Year 11 will not be included on these, we have instead added a second Subject Evening. Not all parents will be invited to a Progress Review Meeting, they will be able to discuss their sons/daughters progress at the Subject Evenings.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

I am very pleased to announce that this year the Glebelands School Council has been reinstated and we will be working towards making the Council a driving force for positive change – led by students, for the students!

The leadership team went through a rigorous election process and campaigned on issues such as bringing music back to Glebelands, improving the school’s recycling facilities, making a difference in the wider community and many more.

The results of the election were as follows:

Head of School Council: Amina Imran

Deputy Head of School Council: Matthew Large

Deputy Head of School Council: Amy Bickmore

The leadership team will be supported by representatives from all year groups.

I would like to congratulate the following students on being successfully elected to represent their tutor group: Glebelands Newsletter

MINDSET MENTORING

The Mindset Mentor scheme is a fresh way to provide a leadership opportunity with a difference! A team of 27 students from year 10 and year 11 have chosen to take on this new responsibility, where they will be able to have a positive influence on some of our younger students. The first training session allowed this fantastic team to learn more about some of the ways the brain works and how students can change their mindsets to tap into their own full potentials. Once fully trained, each mentor will be paired up with some year 7 students who might benefit from a little extra support to develop a Growth Mindset, resilience, organisation, or other positive skills or routines.

“As a Mindset Mentor we learned about the different mindsets we might have, our fight or flight responses and how we can achieve a state of flow. I feel that it’s a valuable to be a peer mentor as it means we can assist students in year 7 if they need any help getting used to transitioning to secondary school.” Grace Erricker, year 11

The second training session, where mentors will be able to practise some of their newly learned coaching techniques with each other, is due to take place on Thursday 15th November. I am really looking forward to continuing to work with this team of students over the course of this year and I am sure it will prove to be a beneficial and empowering experience for all the students involved.
