1 Tjøme – Nøtterøy families

The author of this family research (Thormod Henriksen) is from Nøtterøy. When I retired I got the idea to find all my second cousins; that is all those having the same great-grandparents as myself.

My 4 pairs of great-grandparents are coming from (see map); 1. Østre Bolæren, 2. Sparrønningen 3. Maagerø and 4. Vasskalven. Thus all my family is connected to the two wonderful islands Nøt- terøy and Tjøme in the Oslofjord. In 2013 a large part of this area become a national park called Færder (see the map). Use Google and write “Færder National Park” and you can find a lot of infor- mation on this summer paradise.

I have done research on my great-grandparents – both on their ancestors and in particular their de- scendants – and you can find it on internet with the address; www.maukon.com. Here you can also find similar work on the 4 families to my wife (Målfrid Henriksen).

1. Østre Bolæren

2. Sparrønningen

3. Maagerø

4. Vasskalven

2 This is an updated version in English. Preface

From the map you can see the position of Maagerø – the peninsula on the northeast side of Tjøme. This area has during the years been known for the military activities and lately as the summer par- adise for the royal family.

My ancestors (6 generations above me) came to Maagerø in 1755. At that time it was only one farm, which also included some islands like Leistein (see the map). These islands were some of the best salmon fishing places in the Oslofjord. The fishing nets used (kilenot) must be connected to land and the owner of the land had the right of fishing. My grandfather, father and uncle used this “right of fishing” and I took part in it – and I partly earned my way through the studies at the University of Oslo.

Olava and Søren Sørensen are my great-grandparents that lived on Maagerø. Sørens great grandfa- ther came from Ormelet to Maagerø and lived on Bruk 1 all the time. Olavas father, Lars Haugestad came from Våle to Bruk 2 in 1860. Søren and Olava were thus neighbors (from bruk 1 and 2) when they married in 1868. They lived all the rest of their life on Bruk 1. This property was handed over to Søren and Olavas daughter, Olga and her Husband Oluf (my grandparents). In this research we shall look into the ancestors as well as descendants to Olava and Søren Sørensen from Maagerø.

For all the descendants I use a coding system. Each family member attain a code which makes it easy to determine the generation as well as the relationship between two members of the large family. We use the letter M (for Maagerø) for all the descendants of Olava and Søren Sørensen. Furthermore, we use numbers divided by dots. The 4 children of Olava and Søren are coded M 1, M 2 and so on and M 1 is the oldest of the children. Grandchildren are coded with M and two numbers divided by a dot. The great-grandchildren by M and 3 numbers divided by two dots. Since I am one of these great-grandchildren I have the coding M 3.1.2. M 3 is child number 3 Olga. M 3.1 is Olgas oldest child Trygve. I am therefore number 2 of Trygves children. The system will be explained in more detail later.

In this research I have used the book of Lorens Berg from 1920, Sigurd Unnebergs Nøtterøybok from 1971 and the books for Borre and Våle. Furthermore, I have used Digitalarkivet with the census for 1801, 1865, 1900 and 1910 as well as the scanned church books. I have also used information that can be found on facebook and from family members such as Jorun Bøe and Kari Bainbridge and others.

Several places I have rather little information – and I assume you can find errors as well as informa- tion that should be included. I would like to correct all errors and attain more information. If you have some information please contact me. Since a rather large number of the family members live in USA I have tried to write this version of the Maagerø-family in English.

The name of the peninsula: In this family research we are using the old name Maagerø for the peninsula on the north-east side of Tjøme. The double a in the name was replaced by the Norwegian letter å in 1917 and officially in 1938. Consequently, the peninsula is now named Mågerø. Back in time (1575) the name was “Mougerøenn”, in 1593 “Maurø”, in 1615 Mougerø, and in 1723 Mougerøe. The well known philologists Sophus Bugge and Albert Kjær suggested that the name come from the seabird “gull” which in Norwegian is named “maake” or “måke”.

Maagerø as family name: In 1923 we got a law about names used as a family name. Before that time the family names were very often formed from the fathers name with an ending like sen, sønn, son and for girls datter or dottir – socalled patronymic names. A few other names were from the farm or place one lived. Today, almost 100 years later only about 24 percent use the patronymic names and about 70 percent are using farm names. If we go to the Norwegian censuses for Maagerø, Tjøme we find 22 names in 1801, and 37 names in 1865. All names are patronymic with about 50 % with the ending sen and 50 % with the end- ing datter. This changed in the censuses from 1900 and 1910. Still all the names are patronymic names, but all with the ending sen (no datter). We find Henriksen, Kristensen, Kristiansen, Hansen, Sørensen, and Kolbeinsen. The name Maagerø was used as an extra name in a few cases, just to point out were they lived. It is therefore of interest to ask when the family name Maagerø came into use. My great grandpar- ents from Maagerø, with the family name Sørensen, got altogether 4 children, two boys; Søren and Lars and two girls; Olga and Inga. The two boys ended up with the family name Maagerø. Søren Ingvald used the name Sørensen when he was confirmed in 1883 and he used that name also in 1897. However, when he married the second time in 1898 his family name was Maagerø. He moved to Oslo and in the census for 1900 we find altogether 10 persons in with the family name Maagerø, all living in Oslo. Søren and his family were 5 of those. In 1910 the number with the family name Maagerø increased to 19 and in that period Sørens family increased to 9. As a curiosity we can mention that in 1910 almost 9000 used Henriksen as the family name. The other boy Lars Marinius used the family name Sørensen up to 1913, but in 1915 he also used the name Maagerø. In this family research on the descendants of Søren and Olava Sørensen from Maagerø I have found that about 70 of those have used Maagerø as the family name.

Ownership

In order to find out the ownership of Maagerø I have mainly usedLorns Bergs book for Tjøme from 1922. Furthermore, I have used The National Archive of Norway including the census from 1801, 1865, 1900 and 1910.

In 1575 Maagerø belonged to Mariakirken (St. Mary`s church) in Tønsberg. It was considered to be a “fullgård”, which only indicated that it paid full taxes. This was certainly a drawback, since the church leased out the farm, and in periods it was difficult to lease out the farm mainly because of the taxes. We know some of those that leased the farm, but no one in our family before 1755 when Søren Christensen came to Maagerø from Ormelet. The story behind this is the following. In the period 1703 – 1752 Paul Sørensen leased the farm. He was married three times and his last wife was Aase Gunnarsdatter from Veierland. Paul died in 1752 and Aase was widow for three years.

4 Søren Christensen (he was in our family and 6 generations above me) married the widow Aase Gunnarsdatter in 1755. This is the start-point for our connection to Maagerø. Aase died in 1769 and Søren married again with Inger Jørgensdatter (born 1746) from Færder (the island with the old lighthouse burning coal). It may be of interest to tell that Sørens first wife Aase was 10 years older than Søren whereas Inger was 22 years younger! Remember, this is 250 years ago and Tjøme is an island which could only be reached by boat.

Søren leased Maagerø in the period 1755 – 1798 and we find him in the church books with the name Søren Christensen Maagerøe. In the latter years he used only half the farm, and a newcomer, Nils Abrahamssøn, used the other part.

Søren Christensen and Inger got 7 children. However most of them died young. Two daughters, Aase and Ingeborg grow up. Ingeborg married Arne Kristenssøn from Sundene and they lived on Maagerø-odden, – whereas Aase (Sørensdatter) (1773 – 1835) married Jonas Jensen (1768 – 1842).

Jonas and Aase took over Maagerø when Søren Christensen died in 1798. Jonas bought part 1 from the State in 1835. On part 2 they become owners in 1850 when Kristen Nilsen (the son of Nils Abrahamsen) bought that part.

Jonas and Aase had four boys; Jørgen (b. 1796), Jens (b. 1800), Søren (b.1806) and Torger (b. 1819). They all had some connections to Maagerø.

Søren Jonassen (my great-great grandfather) married Inger Sofie Nilsdatter (b. 1805). She was from Nordre Sande on Nøtterøy. She was daughter of sea-captain Nils Jensen and Ingeborg Larsdatter.

Søren and Inger Sofie had Bruk 1 on Maagerø and got 6 children; Jakob Anton, Nils Jørgen, Severine Sofia, Josefine Maria,Søren and Andrea. The last Søren was my great grandfather. He was born in 1845 and died in 1919. He lived all his life on Maagerø, Bruk 1. He married Olava Matea Larsdatter in 1868 (he was 23 and Olava Matea was 30 – 7 years older).

It may be on interest to mention that Olava Matea was the nearest neighbor to Søren from 1860. That year Olava Mateas father Lars Helgesen Haugstad bought bruk 2 on Maagerø.

Maagerø 1860 – divided in bruk 1 and 2

Søren Sørensen and Olava Matea Larsdatter – the couple which is the basis for this family research came from the two parts of Maagerø. They owned and lived their lives on bruk 1. This part was expropriated by The State in 1919 when my grandparents Olga (daughter of Olava Matea and Søren) and Oluf Henriksen owned this part of Maagerø.

One of the big problems is to find the borders for bruk 1 and 2 as well as the other small parts of Maagerø in 1919 – that is before the State took over the whole area in order to build a fortress.

I have found an official document from December 1860 about the borders between bruk 1 and 2. It was divided in farmland and the rest consisting of forest and small mountains that went to the sea. The borders for the farmland was connected to fences which were there in 1860. The division between the two parts were furthermore determined by a “birch” in east and a to another three which in Norwegian is called “trollebærtre” and in English “bittersweet”. It is not possible to find these today and consequently it has not been possible to find the borders on todays maps.

5 The borders for the outlying are described in a similar way – it starts with a three (a pine) and goes east along some trees to the water. The conclusion is that I can not find these borders today. But it was decided that bruk 2 had the southern part of Maagerø and bruk 1 the northern part.

Leistein. A point that is clear from the paper is that the island Leistein, which belongs to Maagerø can be used for salmon fishing by the two bruk in such a way that each owner use it every second year. The salmon fishing was a considerable income in those days, long before any fish farming flooded the market. It was determined that bruk 2 used Leistein in 1860 and bruk 1 in 1861 and so on. You would think that this right of fishing ended when the State took over the farm. However, when Oluf Henriksen sold Maagerø he signed an agreement that he could keep the right of fishing as long as he lived. Since he lived until 1961 the agreement resulted in salmon fishing for himself and his sons Trygve and Søren. Even I took part in the fishing when I was a student at the University of Oslo. This was an extremely valuable income since we had no loan possibilities before about 1950.

Why was the salmon fishing so important?

In order to understand why the salmon fishing was valuable we can look into the census for 1801, 1865, 1900 and 1910 and thus see the kind of work they did for living.

1801 22 people lived on Maagerø – including 15 children. Nils Abrahamsen (born 1753) and Helvig Halvorsdatter (born 1763) with 6 children leased bruk 2. He was a farmer. Our family on bruk 1; Jonas Jensen and Aase had the children Jørgen (5 years) and Jens (1 year). Jonas was a seaman and farmer with 1 horse, 4 cows and 4 sheep.

1865 Altogether 9 families including 48 people belonged to Maagerø. Farming was important and they had together 3 horses, 10 cows and 5 sheep. On bruk 1 which included my family they had 1 horse, 2 cows and 2 sheep Søren Jonassen was a sea captain. In the other families they were mainly seamen and fishermen. It can be mentioned that 26 of the 48 people on Maagerø were descendants of Jonas Jensen (5 generations above me)

1900 Altogether 63 persons lived on Maagerø. Farming could not support all these people. The man in the family had several possibilities mainly as seamen. Thus, the main income was as seamen + a little farming and fishing and the salmon fishing was important in this connection.

1910 Altogether 69 persons lived on Maagerø. My grandfather Oluf Henriksen was sea captain and farmer. We find 3 other seamen, a farmer and two that seems to be only salmon fishermen. We can conclude that it was some farming. However, most of their income was from the sea as fishermen and seamen.

The salmon fishing connected to Maagerø

The salmon fishing in the Oslofjord was quite important before the fish farming started. Thus the price for salmon was at least 5 times that of cod. The salmon fishing in the sea was carried out with “kilenot” (in English seine which is described on the next page). It is important to know that a kilenot (seine) must be connected to the land (an island) and consequently the owner of the island has the right of fishing. Maagerø had Leistein and a couple of very small islands southwest of Leistein (called Leisteinskjæra) which were good fishing places.

6 The fishing places for Maagerø were Leistein and a couple Leistein of tiny islands (Leisteinskjærene) southwest of Leistein. In the 1900 my grandfather Oluf Henriksen and later his sons Trygve and Søren used these fishing places in the season from early May to almost August.

A kilkenot consists of a leading net from land and out ap- Kilenot proimately 30 meters. This net lead the fish into some room where it is difficult to get free. We have to look into the net two times per day because the tide changes possibilities for the salmon to go out of the net again.

Leistein (see map) has some good salmon fishing places. The picture is from the southern part of Leistein with Færder in the background. One place for fishing was on the southeast end of Leistein and the other place was where we see the red dot.

Below are two pictures from before the war – I assume 1938. To the left we are on the way to Leistein – me in front, then my father Trygve (coded as M 3.1) and Søren (coded as M 3.5). We are in the old boat that was stored during the war. The next picture is my father Trygve with a salmon of about 10 kg. To the left in that picture you can see part of the kilenot – the part we called “the fishing room”

7 About the Salmon fishing

The fishing nets were rather large and they had to be picked free from see-weed and also mended about every 3 weeks in the fishing season. The mending and seaweed picking was for some years my summer-job when I was a student. I got a share of about 10% of the income, which was good enough for my studies. For seaweed picking and mending the kilenot (seine) was taken up from the water and brought to land (we did all this work on a very small island on the west side of Skrøslingen (the island inside Leistein). After the mending the net was put in a solution of water and copper-sulfate (blåstein or blue stone) for a day in order to prevent the growing of seaweed. This is shown below in a picture from 1958. From left is Søren, Sørens wife Nancy, Trygves wife Emilie and then Trygve.

The picture below show the house on the part of Maagerø which Olga and Oluf Henriksen had to give over to Forsvarsdepartementet (The Defence Department) in December 1919.

8 Maagerøs military story

The military story goes back to the first world war. In 1915 it was presented a plan for the defense of the Oslofjord. Maagerø was intended to be a part of Oslofjord defense and in 1919 The Defense Department took over Olga and Oluf Henriksens property. A few things were done like building a command house. In 1933 the work started for a fortress. A combination of the fortresses on Bolærne- and Rauøy, Maagerø should defend the approach to Oslo and Carl Johansvern in Horten. The whole system failed catastrophically on April 9. 1940. In several debates after the war this was taken up by the newspaper Tønsberg Blad and also by my grandfather Oluf Henriksen. In Norwegian; “Hvorfor skjøt ikke Maagerø?” Parts of the buildings from the war can be seen. In 1945 the station was handed over to “Vestfolds lette bataljon”. Kystartilleriet was established in 1946/47. This was more or less at the same time the Air-force come with a mobile radar. The Air-force station “Måkerøy” was established July 1. in 1947. In 1952 the station got a search radar on the mountain above the station, and in 1953 the Nr 10 K&V skvadron was operating with Måkerø as the main station. In 1962 NATO Early Warning-chain was established.

The great leap into the computer time was taken in 1971/72, when the K&V-system was automated and a computer system was included. The national NADGE programming-center was given to Mågerø in 1980.

In the fall of 1984 the station was connected to NATO Airborne Early Warning. The “flying radar” help the CRC to control the airplanes. Another update was performed in 2000.

14. of June 2012 the Norwegian Storting decided that the Mågerø station should close down. Today (2017) the station is closed down and Tjøme kommune discuss all possibilities about the future of this military station. It was the largest working place on Tjøme – and they look for an activity that could give some working places.

It is of interest to the descendants of the last owners like Oluf Henriksen to find back to the property borders in 1920 – almost 100 years ago. It would be of interest to find the place for the house (above page).

The ancestors of my great-grandparents

In this family research we start with my great grandparents Søern and Olava Matea. I have coded all their descendants and it should be easy to see the relationship between them. I have also tried to look into the ancestors to Søren and Olava and a short summary is given on the next two pages.

Sørens family had lived on Maagerø in 90 years before Søren was born. On the contrary Olava Matea came to Maagerø when she was 23 years when her father Lars Helgesen Haugstad bought bruk 2.

Olava Matea was 7 years older than Søren. They married February 6 in 1868 – 6 months before Søren Ingvald was born. They got 3 more children. Olava Matea died in 1893 and they thus had 25 years together.

9 Søren Sørensen (Maagerø) (21/1 1845 – 23/2 1919). Søren was born on Maagerø and lived there all his life. His parents are Søren Jonassen and Inger Sofie Nilsdatter. They had 6 children and Søren was the next youngest. His father Søren Jonassen was a sea captain as well as a farmer with a horse, cows and sheep.

We have the following family tree for Søren.

Søren Christensen (6 generations above me) came to Maagerø in 1755. He was the first one Søren Christensen (1724 – 7/4 1798) in family that was the owner of Maagerø. He also Inger Jørgensdatter (1746 – 1818) used the name Maagerøe. He was married two times and the second wife was Inger Jørgens- datter from Færder. They had the daughter Aase (born in 1773) that married Jonas Jensen. This couple took over Maagerø. The island Færder with the first lighthouse burning coal. You see the ruins. Aase married (1796) Jonas Jensen (1770 – 1842). We do not know where he is coming from. Aase Sørensdatter (1773 – 12/1 1835) Jonas Jensen (1770 – 9/7 1842) They got the chilkdren Jørgen (b. 1796), Jens (b. 1800), Søren (b.1806) og Torger (b. 1819).

Søren Jonassen married Inger Sofie Nilsdat- ter (b. 1805). She was from Nordre Sande on Søren Jonassen (30/9 1806 – 16/11 1882) Nøtterøy. She was the daughter of sea captain Nils Jensen and Ingeborg Larsdatter. Inger Sofie Nilsdatter(1805 – Søren and Inger Sofie had 6 children; Jakob An- ton, Nils Jørgen, Severine Sofia, Josefine Maria, Søren and Andrea.

To the right we see Søren Sørensen and one of the grandchildren – probably M 3.5 Søren Maagerø Hen- riksen. The picture is from about 1915. Søren Sr. is about 70 years – whereas Søren Søren Sørensen junior is about 7 years.

10 Olava Mathea Larsdatter (Maagerø) (28/10 1837 – 10/8 1893).

Olava Mathea was born on the farm Haugestad in Våle. She was confirmed in Våle church 3. October 1852.

Olava Matheas family is from farms in Borre – we can mention Tveiten, Rygland, Eskebæk and Snapsrud. From the book for Borre (1954) we can follow the family at least 5 – 6 generations backwards.

Here we give a “family tree” for Olava Mathea that go 3 gen- erations backwards (including the great grandparents to Olava Mathea). The family tree include 6 generations before me.

11 Some events and lines of the ancestors

In the present work we have mainly concentrated on the descendants of Olava Mathea and Søren Sørensen from Maagerø. However, several of the ancestors above my great-grandparents have spent some or all their lives on Maagerø. It is not the purpose to describe these families here, but some words will be given.

5 generations above me (page 10)

We would like to mention that in the fifth generation above me (see page 10) the Maagerø-girl Aase Sørensdatter married Jonas Jensen. They got 4 boys; Jørgen (b. 1796), Jens (b. 1800), Søren (b.1806) and Torger (b. 1819).

Jørgen (1796 – 1877) married Lovise Nilsdatter (1802-1879) from Nøtterøy. She was the daughter of Nils Jensen and Ingeborg Larsdatter from Nordre Sanne. It happens that Lovise was the sister of Inger Sofie Nilsdatter that married Jørgens brother Søren (my great-great-grandparents). Two brothers from Maagerø married two sisters from Nøtterøy.

Jørgen and Lovise got 7 children. In connection with this work I have had contact with 2 of the descendants to Jørgen and Lovise. This is Øystein Maagerø, which is my third cousin and Kristin Alsaker that is my third and a half cousin.

Øystein Maagerø (1943). He is married to Susan Ebbesen. They live on Nøtterøy – have 3 children and 8 grandchildren – all using Maagerø in their name.

‘The children of Søren Jonassen and Inger Sofie

As you can see from page 10 Sørens parents had 6 children.

1. Jacob Anton. He married Inger Mathilde and they got Johan Anton in1867. Johan Anton married his cousin Inga Sofie Sørensen, – the daughter of Søren and Olava Matea. They got a daughter Janka, and we presents that part in the end of this paper. When Inga Sofie died he married again (1900) with Gjetine Engebretsen from Buer. They got Alfhild (1900) and Borghild (1903) – half sisters to Janka. They are furthermore second cousins to Olgas children since Jacob Anton was cousin to his first wife.

2. Nils Jørgen (1835). He married Nikoline Gjertsen (1834) and they got the children Gjert (1868) and Sofie Inga (1871). They lived on Grønlid (Gnr. 12, bnr. 6).

3. Severine Sofia (1840). She lived on Maagerø .

4. Josefine Maria (?). Have no information.

5. Søren (1845 – 1919). He married Olava Mathea Haugestad and they are central in this investigation.

6. Andrea (1847 – 1916). She married Ole Haugestad, the brother of Olava Matea. They got the children Laura Marie (1865) and Ole (1869). See more under Ole Haugestad. Andrea

12 Olava Mathea`s family

Olava Mathea lived on the farm Haugestad in Våle. She was 23 years when the family moved to Maagerø in 1860. She was the daughter of Lars Helgesen Haugestad and Maren Kristoffersdatter which in turn were connected to farms in Borre. The following farms can be mentioned; Snapsrud, Tveiten, Rygland and Eskebæk. You can find them all in a region around Skoppum – Borrevannet – Borre kirke.

Lars Helgesen Hauges- tad and Maren Kristof- fersdatter my great-great grandparents.

Lars Helgesen Haugestad (1806 – 1895). Lars was from Rygland in Borre. He was the son of Helge Larsen Eskebæk and Kristine Halvorsdatter. They had 7 children and Lars was number 2 of them.

Lars Helgesen was a carpenter and he had several farms and places where he lived. It started on Rygland in Borre. His father – Helge Larsen from Rygland – bought Nordre Haugestad in Våle in 1828. This part was given to Lars in 1839. He bought more land and in the beginning of 1840-ties he had 2/3 of Haugestad. The farm is the reason for the name Haugestad.

Lars Helgesen (Haugestad) bought bruk 2 on Maagerø about 1860. I am not sure how this came true, but he lived on Maagerø the rest of his life. He died in 1895 89 years old.

Maren Kristoffersdatter came from Snapsrud in Borre. Her parents were Kristoffer Nilsen and Oline Larsdatter. They had 5 children and Maren was number 2. (It is possible that Kristoffer is written Christoffer)

Lars and Maren married in 1830 and got the following 4 children.

1. Hans Kristian (1833 – 1876) 2. Ole (1835 – 1868) 3. Olava Mathea (1837 – 1893) 4. Kristine (1842 – 1916)

The children had their childhood on Haugestad in Borre – and from 1860 they were connected to Maagerø. They were neighbors with Søren Jonassen and Inger Sofie Nilsdatter. This resulted also in intern marriages. Let us yield more information on Olava Matheas brothers and sister.

13 1. Hans Kristian Haugestad (1833 – 1876). He was married to Kristiane Hansdatter from Ny- kirke. We have no more information.

2. Ole Haugestad Sr. (1835 – 1868). Ole married Andrea Sørensen – the sister of Søren Sørensen. Ole drowned in Vrengen at a place called Grindholmene – only 33 years old. They had two children; Laura Marie (1865) and Ole (1869). Ole jr. was not born when his father, with the same name, drowned. For Ole – see below. Andrea married again with Nils Jørgen Gjertsen and they had 6 children. Ole Sr.

‘ Laura Marie Haugestad (1865 – 1936). She married Magnus Larsen (1862 – 1942) from Kråkerø. They got the children; Reidar (1894), Vilborg (1899) and Astrid (1907). From Vilborg is a long chain of descendants.

Ole Haugestad (Jr) (1869 – 1949). He married Ingeborg Olausdatter Lærum (1878) from Sande. They got the children; Ingrid (1900), Alfhild (1904) and Kaare (1910).

Ingrid married Sigurdur Markan from Reykjavik on Iceland. They got 2 children and several grandchildren that lives on Iceland.

Ole Jr. Alfhild married Erling Treschow Krafft from Oslo. They have the daughter Helle (1928), and she has both children and grandchildren.

Kaare (Haugestad) Lærum (1910 – 1988). He changed the name to Lærum when Ole and Ingeborg divorced in 1912. He married Gudrun Elvbakken (1913) from Hurdal and they have the children Kaare Bent (1939), Kari (1942) and Anne Mette (1946).

Kaare Bent have 3 children and also grandchildren.

Kari (1942) married Hans Jørgen Nyrerød (1940) and got the children; Hans Christian (1967), Merete (1968) and Ane (1971). Kari has also grandchildren.

Anne Mette married Ola Lunde from Etnedal. They have 3 children. Kari Lærum Thanks to Kari Lærum for the information about the Hauges- tad-family. 14 4. Kristine Haugestad (Larsdatter) (1842 – 1916). Kristine married Wilhelm Anton Sørensen (1833 – 1882) and they got two children; Søren Bernhard (1862), (born on Maagerø) and Lars (1866).

When Wilhelm died, Kristine married again 3 years later in 1885 with mate Halvor Andersen (1860 – 1938) from Maagerø (he was 18 years younger than Kristine). They sold Nordre Haugestad in 1900 and moved to Rygland in Borre where they had a store. Later they moved to Strengsdal, Nøtterøy where they also had a store. If you think that an age difference of 18 years is large, we can tell that when Kristine died, Halvor mar- ried again with Jenny Leonore Jørgensen (1894 – 1968) from Maagerø. She was 34 years younger than Halvor. This implies that it was 52 years between Halvors two wifes.

It seems to be a rather near contact between the two sisters Olava Mathea and Kristine – and con- sequently between Maagerø on Tjøme and Haugestad in Våle and Borre.

Søren Bernhard (1862 – 1926). He is born on Maagerø and probably spent his younger years on Haugestad. He was the director of Borre Sparebank. He had the children; Astri, Birger, Leif and Einar.

We would like to mention that Einar was the father of Arne Haugestad (1935 – 2008). Arne Haugestad was well known as the leader of “Folkebevegelsen mot norsk medlemskap i EEC from 1970 to 1973”. He was a lawyer that defended Arne Treholt from 1985 to 1992. Since he was the great–grandchild of Kristine he is third cousin to all the great–grandchildren of Olava Matea (i.e. like myself).

Lars (Haugestad) (1866 – 1957). Lars is born on Haugestad and baptized in Arne Haugestad Våle church. He married Ingeborg Gulliksen and they got 2 daughters and a son. Lars was the director of sparebank.

15 Søren and Olava Mathea and the 4 children

Lars Helgesen Haugestad and his family came to Maagerø (bruk 2) in 1860. On the other part of the farm (bruk1) we find the family Søren Jonassen and Inger Sofie Nilsdatter. My great–grandfather Søren was then 15 years and my great–grandmother in the other family was 22. They married 6/2 1868 – and 6 months later Søren Ingvald was born 9/8 1868. They got 3 more children. Hlowever, I was for a long time unsure about the youngest in the family. This problem was solved when I hitted the death protocol for “Søndre Jarlsberg”. In combination with the death of Olava Mathea I found the following written in Norwegian.

“Olava Mathea Sørensen, født Haugestad, paa Maagerø døde 10. august 1893. 2 myndige sønner, 1 myndig og 1 mindreaarig datter. Enkemanden skibsfører Søren Sørensen”.

This statement showed 4 children in the family. One girl was denoted as below the “age of majority”. When Olava Mathea died in 1893 Søren was 25, Lars 23 and Olga 22. Since the age of majority at that time was 21, the death protocol said that the youngest daughter was below 21 in 1893.

With this information I started a hunt in the church books. I found both Søren and Lars in the church book for Nøtterøy/Tjøme. Olga however, was found in the church book for Borre. She was born on Christmas eve 1871. I assumed that Olava Mathea and Søren visited family in Borre that Christmas.

This was an inspiration to see more closely into the church books for Borre – and in the church book for 1874 I found the youngest girl Inga Sofie which was born September 13. 1874. She was 19 years old when her mother died and consequently below the age of majority. However, Inga Sofie was married – she got a daughter andf died only 22 years old (see later).

The coding system

In order to keepå record of the family members – both the family relation as well as the generation it is necessary to introduce a coding system. Each member of the family (the descendants of Søren and Olava Sørensen (Maagerø) attain a code (almost like the licence number on the cars). It is thus possible to identify and give the position of each member of the family.

In this family research we give all the descendants of Søren and Olava a code starting with the letter M (after Maagerø). Furthermore, we use numbers divided by dots. Thus, the first generation (rather the children of Søren and Olava) have an M and a number implying that M 1 is the oldest child, M2 is the next and so on. Thus, we get the following; M 1 Søren Ingvald (1868 – 1934)

M 2 Lars Marinius (1870 – 1958),

M 3 Olga (1871 – 1954)

M 4 Inga Sophie (1874 – 1896) Grandchildren (2. generation); have an M and two numbers – divided by a dot.

Great–grandchildren (3. generation); have an M and three numbers, divided by 2 dots – osv.

16 Example 1

Below we have picked out 4 family members; – all from the 3. generation.

M 3.1.1 Aggie Fadum: A grandchild of M 3 Olga and daughter of M 3.1 Trygve. M 3.2.4 Per Ness: A grandchild of M 3 Olga and the son of M 3.2 Haldis. M 2.2.1 Eva Maagerø: A grandchild of M 2 Lars and the daughter of M 2.2 Lars Marinius. M 1.9.1 Kari Bainbridge: A grandchild of M 1 Søren and the daughter of M 1.9 Arthur Nymann.

They are all great-grandchildren of Søren and Olava Mathea – and therefore second cousins. Simce Aggie and Per have M 3 in commen they are cousins (first cousins).

M 3.1.1 Aggie Fadum M 3.2.4 Per Ness M 2.2.1 Eva Maagerø M 1.9.1 Kari Bainbridge

Eksample 2. From the 5. generation.

The coding is M and 5 numbers divided by 4 dots – M x.x.x.x.x We pick out the following; M 3.1.2.2.1, M 3.1.2.2.2, M 3.1.2.3.3, M 3.1.1.2.2, M 3.2.2.1.2 og M 1.4.2.1.1. They are all 4. cousins. However, if the numbers following M are equal, they are nearer to each other. Thus; M 3.1.2.2.1 Trygve Maukon Myhr and M 3.1.2.2.2 Jonas Maukon Myhr are brothers since the first 4 numbers are equal. M 3.2.3,3 Lars Maukon Muren is cousin to Trygve and Jonas since the first 3 number are equal (the last 2 are different). M 3.1.1.2.2 Lars Haugstad is second cousin to the 3 first (the 2 first numbers out of 5 are equal). M 3.2.2.1.2 Victoria Falkeng is third cvousin to the 4 first (the first number out of 5 is equal). M 1.4.2.1.1 Eline Andersdatter Rønningen is fourth cousin to the 5 ahead since the start number out of 5 is different.

Start person brother cousin second cousin third cousin fourth cousin Trygve Jonas Lars Lars Victoria Eline

I do hope these examples can help you when you look for generations and family background.

17 The descendants to Søren and Olava

On the following pages we try to present the descendants of my Maagerø great-great grandparents Søren and Olava Matea Sørensen. We start with the oldest child Søren Ingvald.

Søren Ingvald – M 1 M 1 Søren Ingvald Maagerø (10/8 1868 – 1934). Søren is born on Maagerø and used the family name Sørensen until he married the second time in 1898. His first wife was Dine Kathinka Mathisen (1871 – 1897) from Brøtsø. She died only 26 years old, but they got the daughter Signe Olava (f. 1892).

Søren married again in 1898 with Anna Elise Torgersen (f. 1874 - 1943). They got altogether 11 children (see below)

I find it difficult to find out what he was doing – he was not a seaman. At the census in 1900 he was connected to “Holms Hattefabrik”. The family was living in Thv. Meyersgt. 58 in Oslo with the children Signe Olava, Olga Ele- nore and Sigurd Anker. He was born in September that year and baptized in Paulus church 7/10 1900. in 1910 the family lived in Schweigaardsgate 61 Søren Maagerø and Søren worked as a Brewery inspector.

Søren and Anna Elise got 11 children- They got twins in 1903, but one of them, Asbjørn, died only 9 months old. They got another boy the year after which is also called Asbjørn. We can thus give them all with their coding as seen below.

As you can see Rachel, Lars, Sigbjørn and in particular Ulla become quite old. I had the pleasure to meet Lars when he visited his sister Olga, my grandmother in Oterbekk.

Both Lars himself and his two sons Lars and Sigbjørn were very much engaged in sailing with the boat-type called “Færdersnekke”. Today about 40 Færdersnekker exists. In 1846 Lars built FS Beda. The boat burned in 199? and is out of the register. In 1950 Sigbjørn built the boat FS 25 called Magga. The boat has a number of premiums in the sailing competitions.

M 2.2 Lars Marinius Maagerø

Lars Marinius Maagerø (3/5 1909 – 2005). He is born on Maagerø and baptized with the same name as his father. He mainly used the name Marinius. He married Hildur Therese Hansen from Sundene on Tjøme. They got thr dasughter Eva. We can mention that he built the Færdersnekke “Beda” (the registration was FS 16).

M 2.2.1 Eva Maagerø (1951). Eva is cand. philol. from the University of Oslo 1979 with Nordic as the main subject. She is now (2017) professor in Norwegian at “Høyskolen i ”. She has a number of publications and books within her field. Eva married Harald Karlsen from Torød. He was a physicist and in his master thesis at the University of Oslo he was en- gaged in measuring radioactive activity for samples including H-3 (tritium) and C-14. In a clever method he found that he could measure sample with activities down to 5 nCi – i.e. less than 200 Bq. He was rektor (head of) Sande highschool. They have Lars Harald together.

M 2.5 Ella Maagerø

Ella Marie (Maagerø) Sørensen (9/11 1915 – 1990). Ella is borne in Årøsund. She married Nor- mann Sørensen (1911 – 1985) from Ulvø. They build the house in Berganveien 175 in 1937. They got two girls; Wivian and Else. We find Normann in the family from Østre Bolæren (with the coding B 10.1.1). Consequently, both Wivian and Else can be found here in the Maagerø family as well as in the Bolæren-family.

In this old picture you can see Ella in the middle. To the right is Kåre – the brother of Normann and to the left is Mossi – mar- ried to Kåre. Assume that the picture is from before the war.

51 M 2.6 Ulla Maagerø

Ulla Maagerø (29/3 1918 – 2014). Ulla was baptized “Olava Mathea” after her grandmother from Maagerø. However, she never used that name – she changed the name to Ulla. She was not married and had no decendants. Ulla was 96 years when she died – and thus she is the oldest of the grand- children from the Maagerø-family. In 2008 – when she was 90 – she wrote a long article in Njotarøy (Nøtterøy historielags information paper) about her work at Øserød pleiehjem (old peoples home). She started work when she was 16 and ended as the leader of the place in 1983 when she was 65. It is rather interesting to read about the working conditions in those years.

M 2.6 Ulla Maagerø (foto 2007)

Olga – M 3

M 3 Olga Henriksen (1871 – 1954) was born in Borre on Christmas Eve 1871. She had all her childhood on Maagerø. In 1896 she married Oluf Henriksen (1869 – 1960) from Vasskalven. Olga was 25 years and Oluf 27. They got 6 children; Trygve (1897), the twins Haldis and Synnøve (1899), Sverre (1902), Søren (1908) and Maren Ingrid (1910).

They lived on Maagerø and Oluf was a seaman – mainly on Bottlenose fish- ing around Greenland. It was Olga and Oluf that took over Maagerø (it was approximately half the large farm). Olgas father, Søren, was living partly with above: the young them until he died in February 1919. Olga and Oluf owned Maagerø until “The Olga and below Olga Defense Department” took over the property in January 1920. is 75 years in 1946.

The next step in their life was that they moved to Nøtterøy to Oterbekk. They bought the store “Oterbekk Landhandleri”. They run this store far beyond ordinary retirement age of 67 and even 70. They kept the store to give it over to the next generation which was possible only when the war ended. In 1946 the eldest son Trygve took over – and Olga (74) and Oluf (76) finally retired. They bought a small house on a rather big lot about 200 meters north of the store – called Lia (see picture next page)..

Olga and Oluf had just moved to Lia when they could celebrate their Goilden wedding anniver- sary iin 1946.

52 Maagerø

The pictures above are from the Maagerø period. Left is the relative new house with a view out over Vrengenbsumndet. To the right we see Oluf and Olga with some of the children. From left it is M 3.6 Maren Ingrid, M 3.4 Sverre, M 3.5 Søren with the bicycle and on the step we see the twins M 3.2 Haldis and M 3.3 Synnøve. The picture is from about 1916 – 1917.

Oterbekk

The above picture shows Oterbekk. In the centre of the picture is the place that was “Oterbekk Land- handleri” (marked with a red circle). The house to the right was rebuilt and was the store.

In this picture we see to the extreme right the place called Lia (again marked with a red circle). My grandparents bought and moved here in 1946.This place was taken over by the son Sverre, and after him his daughter Elfie Kobro – and finally to Elisabeth.

53 A picture from about 1928 of the family. We see Olga and Oluf with the 6 children. From left M 3.1 Trygve, M 3.3 Synnøve, M 3.4 Sverre, M 3.6 Maren Ingrid, M 3.5 Søren and M 3.2 Haldis. The family is also presented in the family from Vasskalven.

Here is a picture of the three boys in the family. From left M 3.1 Trygve, M 3.4 Sverre and M 3.5 Søren. The picture is taken in the garden to Søren and Nancy in the 1950-ties. All three died rather young about 70 years. Their father was 91 when he died. 54 The descendants of Olga and Oluf are: M 3.1 Trygve (1897 – 1968). M 3.2 Haldis (1899 – 1954). M 3.3 Synnøve (1899 – 1929). M 3.4 Sverre (1902 – 1971). M 3.5 Søren (1908 – 1977). M 3.6 Maren Ingrid (1910 – 1987).

Above is a picture of Lia when Olga and Oluf moved in. The house was then taken over by Sverre and Elise – and then Elfie and Ragnar and finally Elisabeth. The extensions and rebuildings started in the 1960-ties and very little is back of this house today. It is a very nice place.

M 3.1 Trygve Henriksen

M 3.1 Trygve Henriksen (3/8 1897 – 11/5 1968). He was born on Maagerø and spent all his childhood on the peninsula. He went early to sea and at an early age he got all his seaman educa- tion – such as the navigation school (styrmannsskolen), sea captain school (skipperskole) as well as telegraphist school before 1920. We can mention that he was mate and telegraphist on the whaling ship Orwell from 1925 to 1932. He was then a couple of years on the tanker Glarona – and then back to whaling. When the war came to Norway; April 9. 1940 he was on a transport ship back to Norway. The ship was redirected, and Trygve landed in Gibraltar April 16. Finally he arrived Southampton 17. of May. After a few months he was working in the main office of Notraship in Sunningdale outside London. He worked in Notraship until 1945. From 1946 was the owner of Oterbekk Landhandleri after his parents. He sold the shop in 1963 and moved back to Ulvø (Berganveien 169).

Trygve used his fathers right to fish salmon. He was married to Emilie Rasmussen (19/12 1898 – 17/11 1992). They built the house on Ulvø in 1927. They got 2 children; Aggie (1923) and Thormod (1928). Trygves descendants include; 2 children, 5 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren – and so far 6 great great grandchildren.

Trygve 17 – 24 – 40 – 65

From left, - Trygve is 17 years on his first trip as a seaman. The picture is taken in NewOrleans. Then follow the wed- dinbg day, – Februar 4. 1922 (24 years). Next picture he is mate on the oiltanker Glarona – approximatwely 40 years. To the right he is a salmon fisher on the way back from Leistein – 1958.

55 Vestli – Berganveien 169

M 3.1 Trygve Henriksen was 30 years old when he bought a “tomt” (lot) from Ulvø gård and built this house in 1927. In the picture to the left you can see that the balcony and veranda are not finished. M 3.1.2 Thormod (the present au- thor) was born in the house in Feb- ruary 1928. My mother Emilie Hen- riksen lived in the house until 1989. Fall 1927 From that time until 2017 we used the house in the summer seasons.

In 2017 the house changed owner and M 3.1.2.3 Kristin Muren took over Vestli together with Jan. They started a needed renovation of the whole house. They teared down the balcony and veran- da and in the picture below you can see it. The house was completely renewed and insulated. All windows have been changed, but the rebuilt house is exactly like the old one.

In the course of the 90 years from 1927 to 2017 large changes have taken place. We had electricity, but no water unless for the well in the cellar. No pavement on the road, no telephone and no cars. Since my father was a telegraphist we were very early with a radio – I remember a large loudspeaker. Now we hope that the house can survive for new 90 years. 2017

56 M 3.1.1 Aggie (Henriksen) Fadum (9/1 1923 – 3/3 2015). Aggie was born in Knarberg and moved to Ulvø 4 years old. She went to Handelsgym. in Tønsberg. She was heavily engaged in milorg. during and after the war. She married (1946) Egil Fadum (21/10 1915 – 18/8 1977). They lived in Markveien in Tønsberg – and got 2 daughters; Grete (1948) and Birgit (1952).

A picture from 1956. Egil and Aggie and their two daughters; Grete and Birgit.

Aggie and Egil

Aggie was in the years before the war a typical “Flink pike”. She could play the piano, draw and paint – was good in knitting and handwork. She could read and write before she started school. Con- sequently, the teachers at Bergan skole let her start in 1. grade and then moved her up in 2. grade at Christmas. She took 2 grades in one year which gave her a prestigious position that followed her in all her youth time. Aggie become a girl scout and was next in command for the “blue” scout girls on Nøtterøy. The result was that the local police came to us in September 1941 to get hold of the scouts properties such as flag and lily. This scouting experience was of importance for Aggie and her friends in the last years of the war. They were the age group that took Norway back from the Germans.

To the right is a picture from Aggie and Egils wedding in the summer of 1946. The picture is taken in Oter- bekk with Aggies two grandmothers on the bench – Olga (within the Maagerø family to the right. Almost all those in this picture is now dead. One exception is the boy in front Odd Ingvaldsen.

57 M 3.1.1.1 Grete (Fadum) Abrahamsen (22/3 1948). Grete is married to Knut Abrahamsen (b. 1946) from Haukerød, Sandefjord. They had the large farm at Haukerød (see picture below). The farm was (2008) given over to their youngest son, Trygve. Grete and Knut live now in Huvikveien in Sandefjord. They got 4 children; Alexander (1972), Jørgen (1974), Trygve (1975) and Hanne (1982):

He took a dr. degree on “Carbon and nitrogen turnover in soil” – mainly within microbiology. After 10 years as High School teacher in Gjøvik, he is now back to research. Trond is “sambo” (lives in civil union) with Hilde Bakke (1957). They live outside Gjøvik and have 3 children: Thormod (1989), Steinar (1991) and Ragnhild (1994).

Trond has made a lot of tours like crossing Greenland, climbing several mountains (Kilimanjaro, Mont Blanc, Eberus, and most of the Norwegian mountains. He walked Norway from Lindesnes to Nordkapp in 68 days ! He also is climbing frozen water falls. He become interested in horses when Ragnhild was a “horse girl” – he rebuilt the barn and have at the moment (2017) 5 horses – the house and lot is now more like a stable.

He went through a bone marrow transplanta- tion in Uppsala Sweden in 1990 with his sister Kristin as donor of the healthy stem cells. The treatment was a success.

Picture above is from 2010 celebrating 20 years after the transplantation.

Terje worked very hard after the transplantation to restore the physical capacity – and we shall give a few examples how physically good you can be after such a treatment.

Terje run the New York marathon in 3 hours 18 minutes. A cou- ple of times he has taken part in the Berlin marathon on roller skates (inline) with the best time of 1 hour 22 minutes. He takes part in marathon canoing, and has taken part in the “Nøtterøy Rundt” (32 km) 22 times. He has also participated in Sweden and Denmark in Gudenå (120 km in two days). One of the more spectacular activity we can see on the picture to the right. In 2011 he was on a one-wheel cycle and partici- pated in Birkebeiner-rittet (94 km). The picture is taken when he crosses the finish line.

67 M 3.2 Haldis (Henriksen) Ness

M 3.2 Haldis (Henriksen) Ness (12/6 1899 – 6/8 1966). Haldis is born on Maagerø and was given the name Haldis Otilie. She married Kristian Ness (1896 – 1954) from Høyjord. Kristian was the son of Samuel A. Næss and Kristiane Marie Kristensdatter. They lived in Oterbekk and got 4 children; Georg (1920), Per (1922), Else (1927) and Per nr. 2 (1932).

M 3.2 Haldis in 3 faces of life. Left as a teenager, in the middle about 20 and to the right about 50 years.

Haldis was a midpoint in the Hen- riksen family. She was in charge when her parents needed help because of age. Her brothers were very fond of Haldis and when they got a large coal-fish “sei”, – they gave it to Haldis because she was good in mak- ing fish balls. She had birthday in the beginning of June and we were very often in this birthday to celebrate and to eat Bakalao.

The picture to the right is the Ness home. During the war where absolute darkness was required we all used “blendingsgardin” – black paper. The curtain in the kitchen – other side of the house – was decorated by Else and Per. They did a fantastic job and the curtain should have been saved to a museum.

Kristian Ness was a cook – steward and was in England during the war. He worked for some time as a translator and then for the Norwegian military.

Whereas Else and Per were too young to take part in the war – Georg (Basse) was in the middle of it. His role as a torpedo-man on board the submarines was extremely hard and more or less ruined his life. Several nights after the war he had nightmares including that he could hear the depth charges – that from time to time made it dramatic during the war.

68 M 3.2.1 Georg (Basse) Næss (1920 – 2002). His name was Georg, but we all used to call him Basse before the war. He furthermore wrote his name Næss with an æ (like his grandfather) whereas the other children used an e. Basse was the one in our family that was most heavily involved in the war 1940 – 45. Below we give some of his story. Georg was 20 years when the war started and he was a seaman. He was early enrolled in the navy. He was in the crew on Bath (see below) and the boat was in the “Escort Force” in August 1941 on the way to Gibraltar (konvoi OG-71) when it was hit by a German torpedo. The torpedo hit the machine-room and divided Bath in two parts which sank in the course of 3 minutes. As far as I know only 34 out of a crew of 132 survived. Basse was one of those, and he was picked up by the ship St. Albans. The captain on Bath, Christian Fredrik Thestrup Melsom (the father of Grethe Melsom that later was married to Per Ness) did not survive. He was only 41 years old.

Bath Length: 95.83 m

Here we see a picture of Bath and its captain Christian Fredrik Thes- trup Melsom. He would have been the great grandfather of Grethe and Pers 7 grandchildren.

Furthermore, to the left we have the letter from 1946 where Georg was awarded a medal for the activity on Utsira the last winter of the war.

69 From a webside on the Norwegian Submarines during the second world war

Georg late in life A translation: Georg Næss served on Bath which was torpedoed by a German sub- marine. 98 died and 34 was picked up by St. Albans. He then went to a British school in Skeggness. Afterwards he joined the submarienes and become a quartermaster and torpedo-commander. He served on all our submarines, Uredd, Ula and Utsira and is prob- ably the one that has sent most of the Norwegian topedos on the German ships.

He got the war medal with 3 stars.

Here is a miraculous story: Georg served on the submarine Uredd and – and should have been in the crew on Uredds last cruise. Before Uredd should go from Glasgow he spent some holydays in Sunningdale with his uncles Trygve and Søren. He traveled with a train back to Glasgow, but fell asleep on the train and did not change train on the right station. When he reached Glasgow, Uredd was already on the way to Norway – the last cruise. Georg survived the war but a simple war medal could not compensate for all the hardship during the war.

Georg married Agnes Strand (1923 - 1995) and they got the son Geir (1953).

To the left is a nice dish from Lødner ceramic. The decoration made by Else Ness Falkeng.

71 M 3.2.3 Else (Ness) Falkeng (3/5 1927 – 2004). Else was a very giftet girl with regard to drawing and painting. She worked for a period in the ceramic workshop to Richard Lødner with painting the products. The small factory was, during the war, on the property of Langås Skallestad, where we today find Meny store. Else was one of the staff and worked with decorating the different things they produced.

Else was married to Knut Falkeng (1924 - 1970). They got the children Jens Kristian (1951) and Unni (1957).

The family farm Nes in Høyjord was owned by Kristians elder brother Andreas. He restored some of the houses and drained some of the land and gained several acres of land. Andreas was not married and had no descendants and the farm was transferred to Georg, Else and Per in 1972. For a short period Georg lived on the farm. Else took over the farm and lived there for a period. Afterwards Elses daughter Unni lived on the farm. Else invited the family to a garden party (it was proberly in 1989). below some pics from it.

In in left picture we recognize Elise Henriksen (wife of Sverre) and Nancy Henriksen (wife of Søren). In the middle Elfie Kobro and behind is Kristin Muren. In the right picture we can see Grethe Melsom Ness and me (Thormod) and some parts of the houses. The youngest family members that day was the daughter of Kristin, Camilla and the son of Cathrine, Nocolas – both born in 1989.

M 3.2.3.1 Jens Kristian Falkeng (1951). He is married to Ranveig Røssnes (1954). They live in Hårkollen on Nøtterøy and they have two girls; Regine (1974) and Victoria (1985).

An interesting story about the place where Jens Kristian built the house is the following. In the old days Lussi Bredock was the owner of Stokken. She had a large house for three families along Berganveien. She owned a large part of the area above Stokken and one day she offered Else and me a lot for only 700 kr each. Uncle Søren was heavily against it because you had no way to the lots. You have to use helicopter our uncle said. This was changed very much when Hårkollen was planned and built. Else bought the lot which is the place where Jens Kristian built his house. I regret that I listened to our uncle.

72 M 3.2.3.1.1 Regine Røssnes Falkeng (13/9 1974). She was first married to Sigurd Kraft Gulbrandsen (1974) and they got 3 children. She is now together with Morten Tønnessen. They have a boy Nils. Regine works with childhood education in Solvan- gkirken in Tønsberg.

Nils and Regine have birthday on the same day.

He worked for Notraship in Sunningdale. After the war he was a whaler (a marksman) with “home” on South Georgia. In the summertime and after he finished the whaling he was a salmon fisher and used the old Maagerø rights to his father Oluf. Nancy and Søren bought a house on Ulvø in 1938.

Below is the place Nancy and Søren bought in 1938. It is famous for the large stone-fence. It was a large lot and during the war Nancy had a lot of potatoes on the lawn you can see. I was usually the one that had to turn the soil with a spade every spring.

85 M 3.6 Maren Ingrid Henriksen

M 3.6 Maren Ingrid (Henriksen) Karlsen (23/4 1910 – 22/10 1987). Maren Ingrid was the youngest of the Maagerø children. She played the piano and worked within the administration of Nøtterøy kommune. She was also a crossword expert and supported her father Oluf with good advice. Maren Ingrid married Kjell Rudolf Karlsen (17/10 1913 – 13/6 1986). Kjell was a “war sailor” a machinist working with the engine in the boat. He was sailing with the large whaling ship “Terje Viken” in convoy OB-293 when it was hit by two torpedoes southeast of Iceland 7/3 1941. The crew (99 members) and five gunners were picked up by HMS Hurricane. At the time of her loss, the Terje Viken had been the largest whaling factory ship in the world. Kjell used the time from April to August 1941 to get more education. Kjell was on the ship Manny and participated in the D-day. Maren Ingrid and Kjell married after the war and got a daughter – Berit in 1952. They lived on Føyn- land (see picture below).

I was lucky and was together with -Aggie (my sister) and Maren Ingrid (my aunt) on a bicy- cle-tour to Skrim in the last part of the war.

She is “senior lecturer” at the “Institutt for produksjonsdyrmedisin” They had together Øvre Digrum gård in Enebakk. They sold the farm and moved to Føynland to Berits house where she was born (see picture on the page above)..

87 Inga Sofie – M 4

M 4 Inga Sofie (Sørensen) Jacobsen (13/9 1874 – 21/6 1898). Inga Sofie was the youngest of the 4 children to Olava Matea and Søren on Maagerø.

On page 16 you can read the story how I found Inga Sofie after some years of hunting in the church books. .

Inga Sofie married Johan Anton Jacobsen (1867) from Maagerø 18. June 1893 (she was only 18 years). He was the son of Jacob Anton Sørensen – a brother of Søren Sørensen (the father of Inga). They were thus cousins. They had the daughter Janka together. As you can see in the Summary (last page) Janka was the second oldest of the grandchildren to Olava Matea and Søren. Inga Sofie died from tuberculosis only 24 years old when Janka was only 2 years old.

We would like to mention that Inga Sofies husband Johan Anton Jacobsen was 31 years when he was a widower. He married again (1900) with Gjertine Engebretsen (1877 – 1961) from Buer. They got two daughters Alfhild (1900) and Borghild (1903). They are half-sisters to Janka. Since Johan Anton was cousin of Inga Sofie he was also cousin of Søren, Lars and Olga. We have not included the descendants of those one or more steps away from the great grand parents – Søren and Olava, but it is a fact that their grandchildren are third cousins to Alfhild and Borghilds children. Alfhild married Henry Haraldsen (Knarberg) and had the children Alfhild (1929) married to Finn Hol- land and Per (1932). Borghild married the whaler Hans Abrahamsen and got 5 children; Egil (1925), Hans (1927), Finn (1931), Anne Lise (1932) and Erling (1936).

Oluf Henriksen (my grandfather) started his life on Vasskalven, Tjøme. He married Olga Sørensen from Maagerø and they took over Maagerø (Bruk 1). They had to sell it to the Defense Depart- ment. They then moved to Nøtterøy and was running the grocery store through the war until 1946. They then moved to Lia. Here is a picture from 1955 when Oluf lived in Lia. It is taken on Arås with Ulvø in the background.
