Malathy, M.A., PhD Courtesy: https://www.harpercollins.com.au/9780007228256/ Abstract The incessant thrill of Sidney Sheldon’s novels arises from the psychological impact left by one character over the other. Noticeably, the women characters of Sheldon take a lead role in bringing serendipitous link to his stories. They become psychological tools around whom the entire stories revolve. The delineation of Jennifer Parker in Rage of Angels (1980), Tracy Whitney in If Tomorrow Comes(1985), and Ashley Patterson in Tell me your Dreams(1998) stand a fool proof for the victim versus victor logistics thus unveiling the elements of postmodernism in the society. This perhaps incurs adequate mental agility of the victimized sect especially when it exclusively comprises women. The gradual evolution of a victim into victor in the life span of Sidney’s women protagonists is based on the impact of postmodernism which ==================================================================== Language in India www.languageinindia.comISSN 1930-2940 18:8 August 2018 Dr. P. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Every human being uses defense mechanism in their life. “When anxiety occurs, the mind first responds by an increase in problem-solving, seeking rational ways of escaping the situation. If this is not fruitful, a range of defense mechanism may be triggered” (http://changinngmind.org/ explanations/behaviors/coping/defensemechanisms.htm). Defense mechanism only cause serious problem when people are excessively used. Defense mechanism is a problem that occurs in the real world and in the daily life. It may occur in the school life, such as when a teacher as the knowledge transferor in school thinks that she is a perfect and a brilliant person who give knowledge to the students. She forces her students to always follow and obey her ruler. They have to become a quite child in school. Her students then have a different personality in school and at home. They become a quite child in school because they are afraid of his teacher . They become a naughty child and revenge all the pressure that he gets from his teacher to his family at home. In this case, the children show defense against open expression of id impulses. According to Freud, defense mechanism “serves the useful purpose of defending the ego against the pain of anxiety. Although they are normal and 1 universally used, when carried to an extreme they lead to compulsion, repetitive, and even neurotic behavior” (Feist, 1985: 32). Defense mechanism is a problem of life. In literary work the characters face with some human problems that are usually faced in the real time.

English Teacher Sishya School Hosur “Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. and when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.” -amelia earhart It is believed that women are a powerful source which drives through many things. A woman plays a vital role in everybody’s life right from the beginning. She has a power which can change a sow’s ear into a silk purse. It can only be possible for a woman to play as many roles as possible. God has given the boon called acclimatization only to woman. Holy Books, Epics and different religious books praise woman as something special and great. Right from her birth-bed she gets adopted to each and every place and to every person in her life. Women have always been the strong element in the world. Every man searches in a woman, a mother and a pillow to rest his head with all the troubles and struggles in his head. Friedrich Nietzsche comments, ”Ah Women. They make the highs higher and the lows more frequent”. Most of the writers have different opinion about women and share their experiences and views through various forms and genres. Women have been given full freedom only in fictions and in writings. Parallel to women empowerment struggles faced by women has also increased. It has become a night mare for a parent to expect a child who had not been corrupted either mentally or physically.

www.kazirhut.com MEMORIES OF MIDNIGHT In The Other Side of Midnight Sidney Sheldon created one of his most unforgettable characters: Constantin Demiris, billionaire, art lover, womanizer . and killer. To Noelle, the woman who betrayed him, and Larry, the man who stole her, Demiris brought a chilling retribution. Now, in Memories of Midnight, he confronts the problem of someone else he believes has stayed alive too long. Greece, 1948. In the seclusion of a remote convent a young woman emerges from the trauma of memory loss. To Catherine Alexander, Larry's widow, Demiris seems a benefactor, the man who helps her build a life again. She knows that Larry and Noelle are dead but not who was responsible. Nor that Demiris' desire for revenge is unquenched; that there is a last, unsilenced victim. In this atmosphere of deception, Catherine's move to London seems just another example of Demiris' good nature. Set down in a strange and unsettling environment she cannot guess the fate her benefactor has in store, or that her life is inextricably bound up with other victims of his mighty ego. Moving from the exotic shores of the Mediterranean to postwar London, Memories of Midnight is the compelling portrayal www.kazirhut.com of one woman's fight against a terrifying destiny. Sidney Sheldon's genius as a master storyteller has never been more powerfully displayed. 1 By the same author IF TOMORROW COMES MASTER OF THE GAME RAGE OF ANGELS BLOODLINE A STRANGER IN THE MIRROR THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT THE NAKED FACE WINDMILLS OF THE GODS THE SANDS OF TIME

www.kazirhut.com The Naked Face Sidney Sheldon To the Women in my life - Jorja Mary -and- Natalie Chapter One At ten minutes before eleven in the morning, the sky exploded into a carnival of white confetti that instantly blanketed the city. The soft snow turned the already frozen streets of Manhattan to grey slush and the icy December wind herded the Christmas shoppers towards the comfort of their apartments and homes. On Lexington Avenue the tall, thin man in the yellow rain slicker moved along with the rushing Christmas crowd to a rhythm of his own. He was walking rapidly, but it was not with the frantic pace of the other pedestrians who were trying to escape the cold. His head was lifted and he seemed oblivious to the passers-by who bumped against him. He was free after a lifetime of purgatory, and he was on his way home to tell Mary that it was finished. The past was going to bury its dead and the future was bright and golden. He was thinking how her face would glow when he told her the news. As he reached the corner of Fifty-ninth Street, the traffic light ambered its way to red and he stopped with the impatient crowd. A few feet away, a Salvation Army Santa Claus stood over a large kettle. The man reached in his pocket for some coins, an offering to the gods of fortune. At that instant someone clapped him on the back, a sudden www.kazirhut.com stinging blow that rocked his whole body.
