Rosh HaShanah Morning I September 19, 2020

Intention #1 – Answering the Call, Accepting the Struggle

Teaching: We human beings inhabit the world in between [light and darkness, good and profane]: [We are] mixtures of good and evil. Our souls, which are pure, come from on high and return to when we are gone. Our body is the soul’s temporary corporeal home. As the soul seeks light, so the body tends naturally toward its earthen origins; it erodes, runs down, wears out; and eventually – stripped of the soul – it decomposes, dust returning to dust.

- Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman

Prayer: You are the Source of Blessings, Adonai. Your great power has composed a finely balanced network of veins, arteries, and vital organs. They create a sacred vessel for the soul You breathe within us.

As we rise to answer the call to worship, may we be thankful that we know before whom we stand. As the of these Days of Awe emphasize our mortality, we will feel blessed by Your Presence. For You are present in struggle and sorrow, in repose and resilience.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who beckons us to answer the call.

Prompts for Reflection: - How will you answer the call to worship this year? - What are you grappling with during these Days of Awe? - What answers do you seek from God, from your community, from yourself?

Rosh HaShanah Morning I September 19, 2020

Intention #2 – Remembrance and Discipline

Teaching: We are taught to pray towards Jerusalem, towards the Temple, where the Divine Presence once resided amongst the people. Our sages teach: A blind person and one who is unable to approximate the directions are unable to face Jerusalem, unable to properly fulfill the need to pray. They are permitted to focus their heart towards their Sovereign in Heaven. As it is written, “They shall pray to the Eternal,” (I Kings 8:44).

- Babylonian Talmud, Tractate (Blessings) 30a

Prayer: O Eternal Source of Blessing, in these Days of Awe, may we seek Your guidance in times of distress, uncertainty, and chaos. As we navigate unprecedented challenges, we will continue to strive for Your Presence to weather life’s storms.

Compassionate Sovereign, you notice us as we search for meaning in sacred texts, rituals, and meditations. You encourage us to explore the unfamiliar. You remind us of our responsibility to wrestle with things human and Divine. You give us permission to face these challenges in unique ways.

Amid this season of reflection, repentance, and renewal, may we recall the stories and lessons of our ancestors, prophets, and teachers. Let us proclaim with pride, our heritage and history, that direct our hearts to realize our potential.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who inspires us to turn difficulties into opportunities.

Prompts for Reflection: - How do you discipline yourself? Where can you improve? Where can you be easier on yourself? - How do you bring Jewish values into your life? - What values are you passing on to those around you?

Rosh HaShanah Morning I September 19, 2020

Intention #3 – Hope, Between the Ideal and the Real

Teaching: On Rosh HaShanah, it is tradition to read the stories of Hagar and Ishmael’s Banishment (Genesis 21) and the (Genesis 22). We will study portions of these narratives in our Torah Study following the conclusion of the main service.

[In these narratives,] Abraham’s all-consuming desire to do God’s will at the expense of the welfare of those he loves most (Sarah, Hagar, Ishmael, Isaac) points to areas for moral growth and development in all of us. When we see God as wholly other and divorced from the immediate world of our relationships with human beings, we fail to recognize the God within us and the divine spark within others. God becomes splintered and deformed, and or moral lives do as well.

- Rabbi Amy Scheinerman

Prayer: O Eternal Source of Blessing, renew our hope in this season. On this day, where we commemorate the awesome impact of Your creation, you affirm the ground on which we walk with strength. Through the miracles of nature and the precious teachings of Your Torah, You give us sources of faith. As we walk through the wilderness of life, you give us questions to ask. Your Presence comforts us as we grapple with the tensions between light and life, darkness and death.

On this day, we celebrate our desire for renewal with the sounding of the Shofar. We raise our voices to proclaim courage and endurance. We rally to answer the call to worship, the call towards honest reflection, and the call for repentance and renewal.

Blessed are You, Sovereign of the universe, who ignites within us a fire to light the dark, who shows us the way towards moral improvement, who gives us hope.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us before you in this season.

Prompts for Reflection: - What are your sources of hope in this season? - How do we transform hope into action? Kol Nidre September 27, 2020

Yom Kippur Morning September 28, 2020 Intention #1 - Humility

Teaching: Know before Whom you stand.

- Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Berakhot (Blessings) 28b

Prayer: Dear God, the idea of Your existence has taught us humility. You have taught us to be thankful for the world around us. You have helped us appreciate ritual, study, and struggle.

There are times we feel that You have abandoned us. There is so much pain in this world. When people are oppressed, I wish I could see Your hand coming down to protect the innocent and to set us straight. So many have reached up to You in their time of distress and have not heard clear answers.

Perhaps You meant it this way. If so, I am thankful for the space You have given us to figure things out for ourselves. Therefore, if we destroy ourselves, we cannot blame You. Torah teaches that You created us to have dominion. We are responsible.

Therefore, we will not stop striving towards the ideal perfection emulated in those teachings ascribed to You.

Sincerely, The Penitent

Prompts for Reflection - What helps you remain humble in life? - How can you express humility to improve your life?

Yom Kippur Morning September 28, 2020 Intention #2 - Honesty

Teaching: Our actions help us live in such a way that when we suffer life’s darkest depredations, we will always have ways of coping with them. Our actions may not change the outcome one iota, but they alter our attitude, bolster our ability to withstand changes, help us handle unavoidable misfortunes better, and see life’s value amid chaos and dismay.

- Rabbi Aaron Panken

Prayer:

It becomes too much when we simply sit and stare rather than rise up.

- Beth Kander

O Eternal Source of Blessing, You guide us to hold firm to the convictions of our heritage. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who gives strength to we who are weary, affirming our steps with strength and courage.

Prompts for Reflection - Have you been honest with yourself? With others? - Do you have trouble admitting faults or mistakes? How has that impacted your life? - How do you set expectations for yourself?

Yom Kippur Morning September 28, 2020 Intention #3 – Resilience

Teaching: How fair are your tents, O Jacob, When we stand together, In unity and love, In the name of hope and harmony. How fragile are our tents When our fears divide us When we allow outside winds To blow within. Who but You, Ruach Elohim, spirit of God Can define who we are? What keeps us strong. What keeps us whole. Who but us, K’lal Yisrael, the community of Israel, Can shield us, Carrying each other As one against the storm? How fair are our tents, O Israel, When we stand together, In the name of unity, In compassion, in strength, For our children, And for our children’s children. Kein y’hi ratzon, Be this God’s will.

- Rabbi Ilene Harkavy Haigh and Alden Solovy. Provided by the Central Conference of American Rabbis

Prayer: In these trying times of divisive discourse, let us find ways to speak with one another to build and maintain strong relationships. Let us be motivated by faith and the desire for deeper understanding, rather than our own egos. Let us truly listen to one another, remaining open to diverse perspectives, answering with empathy and love.

Prompts for Reflection - Where can you bring more empathy into your life? - How can empathy make us stronger? Yom Kippur Morning September 28, 2020 Intention #4 - Repentance

Teaching: The place where the penitent stand, the wholly righteous could not stand. Their degree is above the degree of those who never sin. For it is more difficult for them to subdue their passion than for others.

- Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Berakhot (Blessings) 34b

Prayer: Appreciate, Befriend, Care, Discuss Differences, Empathize, Forgive, Grow, Honor, Inspire, Judge Justly, Keep Kindness, Love, Minimize Mockery, Notice, Optimize, Participate, Question, Respect, Search, Teach, Understand, Visit, Wonder, Yearn for Meaning, Zone In

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who forgives our transgressions, transforming our alphabet of sin into one of triumph and progress.

Prompts for Reflection - What are your goals for the new year? - How will you show others your growth? - How will you make reconciliation with those you have hurt?

There are stars up above… There are stars up above so far away we only see their light long, long after the star itself is gone. And so, it is with people we loved, Their memories keep shining ever brightly Though their time with us is done. But the stars that light up the darkest night, These are the lights that guide us. As we live our days, these are the ways we remember, we remember.
