God remains where love remains. When a believer realizes without doubt that God is love, it is a powerful moment. Being able to place our resurrection trust in this fundamental truth allows us to experience God’s presence in all of our experiences: the good and the bad, positive and negative, life enriching and destructive events we encounter. It is no wonder that St. Paul so accurately tells us that it is love that endures all things and lasts. How can God not endure or ever fade away? Because he is God, Jesus also guarded and protected his disciples as the endearing shepherd who always had their best interest at heart.

If we become too immersed in the world, we lose touch with these deeper realities. We can become so preoccupied with preserving what we have created or think that we need, forgetting that it is not building our city that really matters, but God’s. Jesus clearly did not belong to the world and, by virtue of his resurrection, he tries to get us to understand that we do not either. The truth brings us to other worldly, more divine places and takes our eyes off of the concerns that often captivate our fears and storm our senses.

Life can easily erode our faith. Think of your life over the last couple of weeks. What challenged your faith and distracted your divine glance? Even being overly stimulated with technology and social media can erode our sense of confidence and cause us to forget who we really are. We need to distance ourselves from the world in order to experience the joy that Christ offers. The world will never like the word of God. It is too challenging and too perplexing. The world mistakenly believes that it can survive on its own. It is a mistaken judgment that may cost people a lot in the end. It is all so very simple: God remains when we love one another. If in all the business of our lives and all that each day brings, the good and the bad, we follow the call and path of love, we will walk with God. There is nothing to fear and anxiety finds no home.

What Does It Take to Be “Church”? Father Philip N. Farrell

Most organizations and companies have a founder and a mission statement. As the founder dies, retires, or moves on, each successor comes in with a more individualized and personalized vision. Similarly, as times change and the exigencies of life evolve, the mission is frequently updated to meet what might be necessary or just opportune. Look at organizations that have taken on new leadership that changes the culture. Look at companies that rebrand themselves to take on a new product line or repurpose their manufacturing. This successive reimagining brings varying degrees of success or failure and varying points of contact with the origins. The Church was founded by God the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ, with the power of Their Holy Spirit. The vision was the universal and eternal love of God for all creation, especially humanity. The mission was to bring from sin and death so that all might remain in God’s love and extend God’s love to one another. The Founder has never changed, and the mission has never changed! As we heard on Ascension Thursday, to Jesus’ returning to His heavenly Father, He reassured the Apostles that while He would not be physically present to them, the Father would send the promised Holy Spirit in power so that the Apostles would then further the mission and message of salvation throughout the whole world by means of word and sacrament. As we hear from the Acts of the Apostles this weekend, the early Church struggled internally to maintain the balance established by Jesus, but they relied on the Founder for the needed guidance. In the Gospel, Jesus states that He has given to the Church His word, and His word is truth. His word and His Church have been and will be rejected by this world because they do not belong to this world, but neither does Jesus. Jesus consecrates Himself to the Church so that the Church may be consecrated in truth. As WE anticipate change in OUR parishes, it is important that WE prayerfully acknowledge that WE are changing neither OUR Founder nor OUR mission! As a part of God’s plan, life changes…truth does not. In the two thousand-year reality of the Church, the outward appearance, the human leaders, the style and means of presentation, and so many other things have changed, but not our Originator or our core truth. Because, as Jesus tells us, WE do not belong to this world, then change cannot and will not destroy OUR Founder and His mission. OUR change is meant to further the mission of the Father’s truth at OUR time in OUR world. This requires faith in OUR founder, hope in His mission, and love for Him and His plan of salvation for all of US. WE are His Church by acting for His Church.

God Bless The Cities of God!
