Red Raiders Baseball 35 History

The baseball team was founded in 1874, just three years after the school opened, mak- ing it the oldest intercollegiate team on campus. The first re- corded mention of baseball at the university was in the News- Chronicle of May 31,1874, when Shippensburg lost to Mercers- burg Academy 17-5. From that humble beginning the team has become one of the most suc- cessful programs of the Red and Blue. Records from the earliest days of the program are sketchy, but here are a few highlights: In 1875, Shippensburg posted its largest known run total as it downed the Shippensburg Cen- tennial Club by a score of 55-35. The 1900 team posted an unde- feated season under Coach Ezra Lehman going 6-0. Lehman later served as president of the college from 1913-1931. Clyde “Pooch” Barnhart was born in Buck Valley, Pa., in 1895 and graduated from Shippensburg in 1916. Four years later, at the age of 24, he broke into the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a third baseman and began a distin- guished nine-year career. From 1920-28, he played in 814 games, batted .295, hit 27 homeruns and recorded 436 RBIs. He hit over .300 in five seasons and batted .325 with a career-best 114 RBIs while leading the Pirates to a World Series title in 1925. In that series, he recorded seven hits and five RBI against Washington. In 1927, he helped the Pirates to a National League pennant and led the team with five hits and four RBIs in the World Series, but his team fell to the New York Yankees’ famed “Murderers’ Row” in four games. While 29 former Red Raid- ers have signed pro contracts, Barnhart remains the only alum to have played in the major leagues. He also holds the distinction of being the only player in Major League history to hit safely in all three games of a -header.

Fairchild Field

On April 29, 1995, the Red Raiders’ home field was named the G. Arthur Fairchild Field in honor of head coach Art Fairchild, who retired at the end of the season. Fairchild Field, on the north side of cam- pus, has been the home of Red Raiders baseball since 1973. Prior to that, the team played its home games at Eckels Field on the south side of campus. The team first played on Fairchild Field in 1971, but played at Eckels in 1974 before returning in 1975. The field is one of the best in the PSAC, with outstanding infield drainage. The team lost only two home games due to weather in 1993.
