TEAM NOTES:

BLANK SPACE, JARRY On Friday night against the Coyotes, Tristan Jarry posted his second consecutive shutout (33 saves) and fourth of his career. Jarry is the first Penguins goalie to record back-to-back regular season shutout starts since Marc-Andre Fleury on February 4th & 6th, 2015. Those two games are also the last time the team has put up zeros in two straight games.

Dating back to the third period of Pittsburgh's game against Columbus on November 29, Jarry is currently riding a career-long shutout streak of 142:46.

The goaltender currently possess a .943 save percentage and a 1.81 goals-against-average, both the best in the NHL.

THAT 70’S GOAL Evgeni Malkin broke the ice at the 7:13 mark of the third period last night to put the Penguins up 1-0. The goal would stand as the game-winner, marking his 70th career game-winning goal. Malkin became the third Penguin to record 70 career game-winning goals, joining Jaromir Jagr (78) and (74).

Malkin’s 70 game-winning tallies are the fifth-most in the NHL among active players:

Player GWG Alex Ovechkin 108 Patrick Marleau 107 Jeff Carter 85 Zach Parise 80 Evgeni Malkin 70

TANEV THRIVES WITH MAN DOWN Brandon Tanev sealed Friday’s win over Arizona with his second shorthanded goal of the season. Tanev’s two shorthanded goals are tied for most in the NHL.

As a team, the Penguins have tallied five shorties, tying them for the second most in the league behind only the New York Rangers (6).

Tanev now has seven career goals with a man down, and for the third straight season has recorded multiple shorties. He scored a career-high of three while with Winnipeg in the 2017-18.

REINFORCEMENTS The Penguins added two key pieces back into the lineup last night, as Bryan Rust and Justin Schultz both returned from injuries to help the Penguins to a 2-0 win against Arizona.

Rust, who missed the previous three games with a lower-body injury, finished the game a plus-1 in 20:56 of time on ice. Prior to his injury, Rust had 10 points (4G-6A) over his previous six games. His 1.13 points-per-game average (17 points in 15 games) ranks second on Pittsburgh.

Schultz, who was sidelined for the last seven games, skated 18:43 minutes in his return. Prior to his injury, Schultz had eight points (2G-6A) in 21 games and was third on Pittsburgh in time-on-ice per-game, averaging 20:57 minutes.

BRANDON’S A BIG HIT Despite dressing 27 different players through 29 games, Pittsburgh’s game plan has stayed the same – play fast and physical. The Penguins currently lead the NHL in hits (860) and rank second in hits-per-game (29.6) thanks in part to Brandon Tanev (3rd), Jack Johnson (T-30th), and Zach Aston-Reese (T-36th), who all rank in the top-50 in hits this season.

Tanev has picked up 114 hits through the first 29 games, putting him on pace for 322 over a full season, which would eclipse his previous career high of 278 in 2018-19. He is one of five players to record 100 or more hits this season:

NHL Hit Leaders Player Hits Hits/GM 140 4.52 Mark Borowiecki 115 3.97 Brandon Tanev 114 3.93 109 3.63 106 3.66

LETANG LOGGING BIG MINUTES Defenseman Kris Letang is no stranger to logging big minutes for the Penguins. He currently ranks first on the team, and third in the NHL, in time-on-ice per game:

Team Player TOI/GM LAK 25:44 EDM Oscar Klefbom 25:38 PIT Kris Letang 25:21 MIN Ryan Suter 25:14 OTT Thomas Chabot 25:10

Letang enters tonight’s game with 16 points (7G-9A) in 21 games. His seven goals are tied for fifth in the league among defensemen, while his .33 goals-per-game average is fourth-best among blueliners. He currently has points in each of his last three road games (3A).

71 WITHOUT 87 With Sidney Crosby sidelined after undergoing successful surgery, the Penguins will look to Evgeni Malkin to take charge and lead by example. In 132 career games without Crosby, Malkin has 71 goals, 106 assists and 177 points. Below is a look at Malkin’s career totals with, and without, Crosby:
