Giovanni Gastel nasce a Milano il 27 dicembre 1955, da Giuseppe Gastel e da Ida Visconti di Modrone. Traendo ispirazione anche dallo studio dell’arte rinascimentale, Gastel si rifà costantemente ad un’ideale di eleganza, che ha respirato sin dall’infanzia, soprattutto grazie alla madre. La consacrazione artistica avviene nel 1997, quando la Triennale di Milano gli dedica una mostra personale, curata da Germano Celant. Gastel utilizza le tecniche “old mix”, quelle a incrocio, le rielaborazioni pittoriche, gli sdoppiamenti e le stratificazioni, fino al ritocco digitale. Il successo professionale si consolida nel decennio successivo, tanto che il suo nome appare nelle riviste specializzate insieme a quello di fotografi italiani quali Oliviero Toscani, Giampaolo Barbieri, Ferdinando Scianna, o affiancato a quello di Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Annie Leiboviz, Mario Testino e Jurgen Teller. Giovanni Gastel was born in Milan on December 27th, 1955 to Giuseppe Gastel and Ida Visconti di Modrone. Taking his inspiration also from the study of Renaissance Art, Gastel constantly goes back to an ideal of elegance he has been in contact with since his early youth, mostly thanks to his mother. The artistic consecration takes place in 1997, when the Triennale di Milano dedicates him a personal exhibition, curated by Germano Celant. Gastel utilizes the “old mix” techniques, the junction ones, pictorial riela- borations, decouplings and stratifications, up to the digital touch-up. È arrivato ai cavalli per la passione ippica di uno zio, titolare di una scuderia di galoppo (la Lucana Gens) che nella giubba rossa e blu portava i colori della sua città nativa, Potenza. Prima di approdare al Corriere dello Sport, negli anni ’80 è stato per lungo tempo a Cavallo 2000, uno dei due trisettimanali ippici italiani di allora, collaborando anche alle prime trasmissioni televisive ippiche dell’epoca. Si è anche occupato di aste, come banditore e come redattore di cataloghi.

Mario Viggiani is a senior editor at Corriered dello Sport, in Rome where he has worked since 1984 in charge of horse racing and equestrian pages, as well as those of tennis and boxing. He got his passion for horses from his uncle, who owned a racing stable (Lucana Gens) whose jockeys rode in red and blue silks – the colours of his hometown Potenza. Before coming in Corriere dello Sport in the eighties,he spent many years at Cavallo 2000, one of what were the two tri-weekly Italian horse-racing magazines at the time. He was also a presence in the first racing programmes to be shown on television, as well as having a role as auctioneer and editor for sales catalogues.

In addition to his father Philippe, two other brilliant riders and first class trainers with a great equestrian culture Thomas Fuchs and Beat Meandli, influenced his riding. His progress was also significantly influenced by a period spent in Valkensward when Jan Tops called on him to ride for his stable. At the age of 21 she arrived in Europe to gain experience at the yard owned by the German rider Paul Schockemoehle, once there, however, her idea of spending a summer in Germany turned into a permanent move. The turning point in Meredith’s private and professional life came when she met Markus, a member of the German team and brother to champion rider Ludger. They immediately set up a yard together and were extremely successful even before their marriage (1998). Meredith Michaels Beerbaum was the first woman to be part of a German Team in a European Championship (Hickstead 1999) and still holds the record for being the only woman to have won the World Cup Final three times, always riding the same horse; the unforgettable Shutterfly.

Q. What did it mean for you to change citizenship to then become a leading rider on the German team for many years? A. The decision to ride for Germany was a very difficult one. First of all giving up my American passport and watching as the United States official at the Embassy in Hamburg cut through it with scissors was heartbreaking. In addition, i wasn’t like I was changing my nationality to a country that was weaker and begging for riders. I knew how hard it would be to make the German team in any case, but especially as a women. But looking back, it was clearly the right decision. Q. Who are the people who have had the greatest influence on your career as a champion show jumper. A. Well, my mom and my step dad were my major supporters throughout my younger years. per una donna. Guardando però indietro penso sia stata la giusta decisione. D. Chi sono state le persone che maggiormente hanno influenzato la tua carriera? R. Mia madre e il mio patrigno sono stati ovviamente i miei più grandi sostenitori quando ero ragazza. Senza di loro nulla sarebbe stato possibile. Oltre che a finanziare l’attività mi aiutavano veramente sul campo: mamma con il grooming e l’assistenza e il papà guidando il camion per portare i cavalli in giro per tutti i più bei concorsi americani. Poi naturalmente c’è stato Markus, prima mio compagno e poi mio marito, che è anche il mio trainer. È certamente la persona più importante nella vita e nella carriera sportiva. Mi ha sostenuto in tutti i momenti sia positivi che negativi incoraggiandomi sempre. È stato il mio trainer negli appuntamenti più prestigiosi e gli sarò grata a vita. D. Come è organizzato il lavoro tra di voi in una scuderia professionale quale la

Lui al momento è molto attivo come chef de piste mentre io sono piacevolmente impegnata, oltre che con i miei cavalli, nelle lezioni degli allievi con i pony. Ci confrontiamo continuamente in ordine alla pianificazione dei concorsi, ai problemi di ordine veterinario e di allenamento. Markus ed io abbiamo gareggiato l’uno contro l’altra per anni. All’inizio mi faceva una certa impressione incontrare mio marito in barrage. Comunque entrambi abbiamo realizzato che la migliore cosa è concentrarsi sulla propria performance e semplicemente pensare a dare il meglio. D. Come scegliete il programma delle gare e quali sono i concorsi dove non vorreste mai mancare? R. Pensiamo in primo luogo a ciò che è meglio per i nostri cavalli. Proviamo a fare sempre programmi a lungo termine per tenere i cavalli nella migliore condizione e portarli al massimo impegno quando sono al massimo della forma. A. lt is very difficult to compete at the top level of the sport, travel week-in and week-out around the world and maintain a normal family life. That is why I have decided to do less showing and therefore less travelling so that I can spend time with my daughter and not miss out on her life. Q. Between work and family how do you make time for hobbies or passions? lf so, which ones? A. Yes, I have tried to make time for certain hobbies that I enjoy, especially if I can do them with my daughter and my husband. Golf is one of such hobbies. And as soon as I can I’ll teach my daughter to scuba dive, I can’t wait to enjoy that hobby with her. Q. Does a champion like you, with a career filled with successes, still have a secret dream? A. There is nothing I would enjoy more in the future than watch my daughter have joy and fun in this sport like I have. That would be my biggest wish.

IL CAVALLO DI LEONARDO Leonardo’s horse

Posizionato all’ingresso della Tribuna Secondaria dell’Ippodromo Snai San Siro, con oltre 7 metri di altezza e 10 tonnellate di peso, il Cavallo di Leonardo è una delle più grandi sculture equestri mai realizzate.

La maestosa opera - forgiata interamente in bronzo dall’artista statunitense Nina Akamu nel 1999 - si ispira a un monumento equestre dedicato alla memoria di Francesco Sforza progettato da Leonardo da Vinci tra il 1482 e il 1493. Gli studi e l’interesse nei confronti dell’anatomia del nobile animale, portati avanti da Leonardo già in precedenza, divengono la base su cui sviluppare un’impresa monumentale: realizzare un cavallo quattro volte più grande del naturale in posizione eretta, sostenuto solo dalle zampe posteriori. Sfortunatamente

Measuring over seven metres tall and weighing ten tons, Leonardo’s Horse is positioned at the entrance of the Grandstands at the Snai San Siro Racetrack and is one of the largest equestrian sculptures ever created.

The majestic work of art, made entirely in bronze by the American artist Nina Akamu in 1999, is inspired to an equestrian monument commissioned in remembrance of Francesco Sforza and designed by Leonardo da Vinci between 1482 and 1493. The studies and interest in the anatomy this noble animal shown by Leonardo on previous occasions, became the bases on which a monumental feat was to be developed: the creation of a horse four times larger than in real life and rearing, supported only by its hind legs. Sadly, Leonardo was unable to complete the sculpture because when the clay model was at last ready, the French invaded the city and the bronze set aside for the creation of the horse was used to build canons to defend the city of Milan. In 1977 Charles Dent, an American professional pilot enchanted by the history of this never-completed Horse, founded the Leonardo da Vinci’s Horse Foundation that, five centuries after the maestro’s original project, collected enough funds to have the sculpture completed. Non credo esista emozione più forte che entrare in un rapporto simbiotico e assoluto con un essere vivente come un cavallo. Lo splendido animale, avendo occhi molto laterali, non ha la capacità di mettere a fuoco da vicino e così sfruttando questa sua debolezza strutturale l’uomo da decine di migliaia di anni è riuscito facendo abbassare l’incollatura al cavallo a diventarne gli occhi e la mente decisionale. Cosi è nato quello che da sempre è chiamato binomio. Non più un cavallo, non più un uomo. Un essere nuovo e splendido che unisce 500/600 kg di muscolo a un essere pensante e razionale come l’uomo. Un centauro mitico e magnifico capace di cose straordinarie e quasi incredibili come saltare in potenza muri di due metri e trenta. La prima volta che ho provato questa magnifica sensazione è stato da bambino, verso i sette anni, nella casa di campagna di uno dei miei zii Visconti in Toscana. Do not believe there exists a more powerful emotion than establishing an absolute and symbiotic relationship with a living being such as a horse. Having very lateral eyes, this splendid animal is not able to focus on what is close and that is why, by exploiting this structural weakness, for tens of thousands of years, humankind has become its eyes and decision-making brain by managing to make horses lower their necks. This resulted in what has always been known as a ‘combination’. No longer a horse, no longer a person, but a new and splendid being that merges 500 to 600 kg of muscle with a thinking and rational being. A mythical and magnificent centaur capable of extraordinary exploits such a jumping walls measuring two metres and thirty centimetres in a puissance class…

The first time I experienced this magnificent sensation was as a child. I was about seven years old and staying in the country home in Tuscany that belong to my Visconti uncles. Edoardo, a former cavalry officer, instantly understood my passion for his splendid horses and allowed me to ride one during a couple of rounds of the courtyard of his house high in the hills. He then took me to the edge of a slope and whipped the horse, which took off at a fast gallop down the hill avoiding the olive tre- es. “What should I do?” I shouted. And he imparted the first essential riding lesson, “Stay on!” he shouted back. I miraculously managed not only to avoid falling, but also to ride the horse back to the house. Edoardo looked at me through new eyes, almost as if I had become the member of an exclusive club thanks to my bravery as well as my control over myself and my fear. So that was how riding became a part of my life. I have ridden everywhere and done so all my life. Now I own four horses that I keep in Lomellina and join them whenever possible.

3 Io gli urlai :”Cosa devo fare?” E lui mi diede la prima essenziale lezione di equitazione “Stai su!” Urlò. Io riuscii miracolosamente non solo a non cadere ma anzi ricondussi il cavallo alla casa. Edoardo mi guardò con occhi nuovi quasi fossi entrato a far parte di un club esclusivo per coraggio e dominio di me e della mia paura. E così fu che il montare a cavallo è diventato parte della mia vita. Ho montato a cavallo dovunque e per tutto l’arco della mia vita. Ho quattro cavalli in questo momento che tengo in Lomellina. E li raggiungo non appena possibile e insieme corriamo per la splendida campagna in ogni stagione dell’anno. Amici preziosi e fedeli ma esseri viventi e cioè dotati di attitudini e comportamenti (direi caratteri) personali che vanno capiti e compresi. Il montare a cavallo è conoscere una lingua comune che il cavallo intende perfettamente e che parla con noi attraverso gli “aiuti”. Mani, gambe, baricentro, voce, frustino ecc permettono di comunicare perfettamente e di avere dal cavallo risposte chiare ed evidenti. Ma pochi oggi hanno la pazienza di imparare questa lingua. Da qui la paura di molti verso questi unici e irrinunciabil amici. Ma per noi che abbiamo imparato questa complessa lingua resta l’incredibile gioia di correre nel vento seduti sulle spalle di un amico meraviglioso e felice e con lui saltare ostacoli e rivi e sentire la progressione che pare infinita del suo splendido galoppo. Credo che l’eleganza, parola fondante di tutta la mia estetica fotografica e poetica, derivi in parte anche dalla contemplazione di quel miracolo della natura che è il cavallo. Dice il poeta Vittorio Sereni:”L’eleganza virtù prettamente animale / delle poche che gli uomini possono donare alle cose”.

Credo che l’eleganza, parola fondante di tutta la mia estetica fotografica e poetica, derivi in parte anche dalla contemplazione di quel miracolo della natura che è il cavallo.

Together we race through the splendid countryside in every season of the year. They are precious and loyal friends, but also living beings and thus have personal attitudes and behaviours (I would say temperaments) that must be understood and acknowledged. Riding means knowledge of a shared language that the horse understands perfectly and is conveyed by us through “aids”. Our hands, legs, seat, voice and whip etc allow us to communicate perfectly and obtain clear and understandable answers from the horse. Nowadays few have the patience to learn this language and hence many fear these unique and indispensable friends. However, for those of us who have learned this complex language, there is the incredible joy of racing in the wind seated on the back of a wonderful and happy friend, jumping obstacles and creeks, feeling the seemingly infinite progression of a horse’s splendid gallop. I believe that elegance, the founding element in all my aesthetic and poetic photography also deri- ves partly from the contemplation of that miracle made by Mother Nature; the horse. The poet Vittorio Sereni says, ”Elegance is a strictly animal virtue /one of the few human beings can bestow on things.”

Era possibile immaginare che un ragazzo di Chicago senza una tradizione familiare nel campo dell’equitazione sarebbe diventato il numero uno al mondo?

Kent Farrington, cavaliere americano, ha iniziato a montare all’età di otto anni dopo aver trovato una foto della madre a cavallo. Born to famous equestrian parents who played leading roles in the world of international show jumping, as well as being best friends, Francesca Arioldi and Filippo Bologni were both born with horses in their DNA. They spent their childhoods following around their globetrotting families to the most famous national and international shows and started to enjoy riding ponies as children. Very soon they both became real “enfants prodige” and then young champions; roles that suited them both to perfection . They grew up together and have always had to mix their growing-up with the normal lives of their peers, a feat that was certainly not easy considering their sporting commitments. Love and passion for sport, added to enthusiasm and curiosity, as they explain in this shared interview, are the driving force of a life-style they continue to share. Curiously they are also now testimonials, since the designer and stylist Isabella Sedik, who shares a great passion for the equestrian world with both Filippo and Francesca, has chosen them both as representatives of her brands; Sedik Milano, the first a collection of bespoke haute couture and the second the active-wear line SDK. Elegance and horses are already a very successful mix and for Filippo and Francesca this has marked a new experience that is decidedly new to their normal routine. “On loan” from the world of sport to that of fashion as champions in other sporting disciplines, we see them involved in unusual activities such as choosing sophisticated material for the clothes made specifically for them, or on their first fashion photo shoot that involved them as the testimonials of the two brands. Question: Roberto Arioldi and Arnaldo Bologni. Your fathers were great champions and your mothers their perfect partners. What is it like to be the children of such famous people? Filippo - It was a privilege, because especially in our sport it is essential to have a system and a team to back one up. It isn’t everything, but it is fundamental. The less enthusiastic aspect is that close contact with one’s family can at time create a little conflict. But unity is strength and if one manages interaction well, then something good always comes of it. Francesca - The positive aspect is the chance to ride with someone who not only has specific experience but also knows you very well. The fact that one is compared to someone who is a great champion, in my case my father, leads to the problem of “being up to it”, an aspect I have managed with the correct degree of detachment.

Ancor più emozionante perché del tutto inattesa. Per me, già essere in gara in quel campo, sacro per l’equitazione italiana, era di per sé una vittoria acquisita.

D. L’equitazione è uno sport che è sinonimo di eleganza. In quanto atleti dei Gruppi Sportivi dell’Arma dei Carabinieri (Filippo) e dell’Aeronautica (Francesca) in gara la divisa è d’obbligo. Nel tempo libero quale è l’abbigliamento che preferite e il capo che indossate più volentieri? Abbiamo iniziato a studiare ogni possibilità per trasformare questo bellissimo angolo della campagna toscana in un impianto idoneo per la pratica del gioco del polo. Tutto è andato avanti in progressione con l’obiettivo di creare qualcosa che fosse perfettamente integrato con l’ambiente circostante e al tempo stesso di ottimo livello per il gioco. Il benessere dei cavalli e l’adeguatezza delle infrastrutture di accoglienza per i giocatori sono sempre state uno dei principali obiettivi della famiglia Tattoni e del Club che ha come Polo Manager Juan Bozzi. L’attività del Polo Club ed il forte coinvolgimento nella sua attività di Edu Menendez ha fatto sì che Villa a Sesta sia diventata per il popolare giocatore argentino una sorta di seconda casa. “ Vivo qui almeno sei mesi l’anno. The club is so good that last Septem- ber it hosted the European Championships in which Menedez was the coach for the Italian Team that won the gold medal. “I came here for the first time in 1997 when, following his father’s death, Riccar- do Tattoni asked me to set up the project he had in mind. We started to study all the different options available for transforming the beautiful corner of the Tuscan countryside into a location suitable for playing polo. First came the playing fields and the stables and paddocks, then the hotel with its club house.
