The campaign was formally announced at a Village Hall supper in June 2013, but fund-raising really only started at the Monk Sherborne & District Horticultural Show on 3 August, with a display showing what needed to be done, and the sale of specially commissioned mugs. With a village of only about a hundred houses, most people expected the fund-raising to take perhaps a couple of years or so, but ‘most people’ had reckoned without the Monk Sherborne spirit. Amazingly, within six months, by the end of January, the campaign had raised over 90% of the likely cost before VAT, and we had had some good news - the Government had announced that the Listed Places of Worship Grants Scheme was being extended from October 2013 to repairs to bells and bell ropes. The Scheme provides for up to £42m a year to be made available, so that as long as our applications were in the first £42m to be made, our target could probably be reduced by £5,000. We did, though, have first to pay the VAT before we could claim it back.

Where has the meaning of Christmas gone The best smell to me has always been the furrowed earth. Over the last few years.
