2 THE RECTORY July 2018

Dear All

At the end of April, we had a Benefice Service at the beautiful little church at Ashington. The Church was full and we had the benefit of the Benefice Choir.

The service was on the same day as the one that was taking place in Zambia, where our bishops and people from this Diocese were visiting (someone from Mudford went) to celebrate 40 years of the Link of Friendship between the two Dioceses. We used the same service as much as possible, same hymns and readings and we had our own link too. Alex Henry from Marston Magna was volunteering there, before going to university. He wrote us a letter about his work, including helping in a baby clinic. It was read by his mother Sara and made the service very special. Alex is back now, last seen helping at the Village Event, the Pimms tent I think I remember, with his family.

This month on the 14th July at 2.30 there will be an anniversary celebration at Wells Cathedral, when guests from Zambia wall be coming. At 3.45 will be an “After-party” at the Bishop's Palace. Free entry to explore the Palace and gardens, to meet Zambian guests, enjoy family games and live music including the Royal Artillery Band. (I am pleased about this my father was Royal Artillery!).

Bring a picnic and soak up the atmosphere. There will be a charge of parking of £3. (Cheap! I have to go to Wells sometimes and parking is expensive) If you would like to go it would help if you registered at www.bathandwells.org/zambia-celebration

At the end of July on 29th at 10.45 will be another Benefice service with the Choir. This time to celebrate Lammas, the first fruits of the wheat harvest. We will have a loaf to use communion and eat at the picnic afterwards. Bring your own picnic but we will provide drinks.

Marston Magna Midsummer Fair

We had a very successful event on Saturday 9th June, helped by good weather over the day and evening. Around 500 visitors of all ages attended, not to mention 50 or so dogs!

The wide range of attractions, many of them for the first time, helped to swell the crowds and keep the youngsters amused and occupied. Pony rides and a visit from a local fire engine were among the highlights.

We are enormously grateful to everyone who helped with the planning and organisation of the event, and of course all those who turned up on the day. The Fair was also a financial success.

While some figures are yet to be finalised, the provisional overall results were –

Total takings on the day, including Duck Race and Raffle £3,492 Cash sponsorship and donations £ 756 Total income £4,248 Total expenses £ 958 Surplus for distribution to local causes £3,290

Main individual gross takings included £ Entry Gate (adults only) 323 Raffles 1,003 Dog Show & Temptation Alley 318 Plants 263 Bazaar 130 Cakes 260 Teas 78 Pimms & Prosecco 517 Games 82 Tombola 137 Other stalls etc. 130 Annoy the Treasurer 12

The Duck Race contributed £200 towards the total. The Duck Race winners were –

1st Sue Fraser; 2nd Viv Bateman; 3rd Warwick Milne. The Fir Villa Basket of Fruit was won by Lyn Monson. And the main raffle prize-winners were: -

Cynthia Eydmann; Simon Mottram; Jean Timbrell; Simon Bate; Sam Browne; Janet Koerner; Charles Saggs; Crispin Whittell; Craig Parsons; Allison Hardis; Colin McCourt; Emily Turton; Chris White; Ruth David; Sarah Henry, Norman Watkins; John Haigh; and Sarah Howell.

The Event Committee would welcome applications and proposals from residents, with supporting costs and/or accounts, on ideas which would be of benefit to the community. Last year’s event contributed to the formation of the Village Action Group, and towards the Community Dinner organised by our Cider-men, as well as support to the local Church and the Village Hall.

We will also soon put forward the date for next year’s Fair. Again, we would strongly welcome offers of help and support from people willing to make next year’s event even better. If you want to help in any way, please get in touch with me.
