Dog mess

I'm sure most dog owners are responsible people and clear up after their pets. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Would those who leave bags of dog mess at the side of Plough Lane in Marston please take it home. This is surely the

whole point of clearing up after your pet; not to leave it for someone else to bin.

Friends are very rare jewels indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. Show your friends how much you care. Remember to always be there for them, even when you need them more. Cherish the time you have, and the memories you share... being friends with someone is not an opportunity but a sweet responsibility.

st 1 Worton & Marston Brownies are looking for an adult to join the team and to take on the responsibilities of running the unit. I have given 28 years’ service to Worton & Marston Brownie Pack and feel it is time to take a step back. Ideally I would like to be able to work alongside somebody for a good few months to show them the ropes and then maybe hand over to them as the Guider in Charge and stay on as the assistant Guider, with a little bit less responsibility. I am hoping to be able to retire from the unit altogether by the end of this year

As promised in the short entry in last month’s magazine, can I give more details about the future of the Gardening Club. We do not have any volunteers to take on the role of chairman or programme secretary at pre- sent. Therefore, we do not have a full programme of events this year at this point and similarly do not intend to hold the Flower Show in the summer. We will continue to look for people who are willing to help and will update the village if we find anyone to take on these roles.

If no volunteers come forward, we will meet again at the AGM in No- vember and then make more permanent decisions about the future of the

Club and Show.

Until then, we shall communicate with members about specific events as these arise. Probably the first of these will be a request for plants for the School Fete in May. So if you are dividing shrubs, have spare plants or

planting seeds, please bear this event in mind.

As above, should the situation change, we will let everyone know. If

you would like to enquire about either of the roles, please get in touch.

Footprints

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him, and the

other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the

very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most

you would leave me."

The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and would nev- er leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

OLD MILL ARTS Extract from The Bridge (Feb 1987), kindly provided by Tony Walker

25th March - 16th April 2017

Paintings by Michael Higham

A piece of social history

This is the first time that this collection of beautiful paintings has been seen by the general public. They were created by local artist and architect Michael Higham when he was living in Marston, Wilt- shire and he left them as a legacy for his family who saw most of them for the first time when they discovered them in the attic after his death in 2014.

The subjects include historical machinery, threshing machines, bee- hives, all in his much loved agricultural settings and local landscapes in and around the Devizes area, Wiltshire between 1960 and 2006.
