Coverscaping: Discovering Album Aesthetics. Museum Tusculanum Press. 2 Abstract The Pomegranate Cycle is a practice-led enquiry consisting of a creative work and an exegesis. This project investigates the potential of self-directed, technologically mediated composition as a means of reconfiguring gender stereotypes within the operatic tradition. This practice confronts two primary stereotypes: the positioning of female performing bodies within narratives of violence and the absence of women from authorial roles that construct and regulate the operatic tradition. The Pomegranate Cycle redresses these stereotypes by presenting a new narrative trajectory of healing for its central character, and by placing the singer inside the role of composer and producer. During the twentieth and early twenty-first century, operatic and classical music institutions have resisted incorporating works of living composers into their repertory.

Thank you for participating in Western Canada Theatre’s matinee programming! We would like you and your students to get the most out of your experience with us. Included in this package is some inside information exclusive to teachers and students, discussion questions, classroom activities, and online resources. We hope you find them useful Before and after seeing the show. Please take a few minutes to review appropriate theatre etiquette with your students. While clapping and laughing are most appropriate for the theatre, whispering, talking, and excessive movement during the show is distracting to others in the audience and our actors on stage. Audience members are encouraged to get comfortable, remove coats, use the washroom and turn all electronic devices OFF Before a show Begins. Please remind your students that texting is not allowed during the show. Remembering theatre etiquette makes the show more enjoyable for everyone! 1 Are We Cool Now? Animism by Tanya Tagaq was voted as the winner of the 2014 Polaris Music Prize tonight at The Carlu in Toronto. The winner was decided and announced during the 9th annual gala event. Tanya Tagaq was awarded a cash prize of $30,000. The winner was !announced by the gala host, actor Jay Baruchel. “We've been doing it our own way without backing down artistically or conforming, so to be recognized in this way and have so many people latch on makes me feel the world is tolerable. There's so much hurt in the world and within indigenous cultures with colonialism,” said Tanya Tagaq. “Canada is in a desperate need for repair and I think a lot of people are tired of living this way and just to have people understand where we're coming from makes me have hope that we can move forward and expose the true history !of Canada.” Animism was produced by Jesse Zubot (Dan Mangan, Fond of Tigers) with additional production by Juan Hernandez. The record features Michael Red (Low Indigo), a live programmer whose wild northern field recordings often serve as Tagaq’s de facto backing !band, percussionist Jean Martin and opera singer Anna Pardo Canedo. PUNK AESTHETICS IN INDEPENDENT "NEW FOLK", 1990-2008 John Encarnacao Student No. 10388041 Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences University of Technology, Sydney 2009 ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Tony Mitchell for his suggestions for reading towards this thesis (particularly for pointing me towards Webb) and for his reading of, and feedback on, various drafts and nascent versions presented at conferences. Collin Chua was also very helpful during a period when Tony was on leave; thank you, Collin. Tony Mitchell and Kim Poole read the final draft of the thesis and provided some valuable and timely feedback. Cheers. Ian Collinson, Michelle Phillipov and Diana Springford each recommended readings; Zac Dadic sent some hard to find recordings to me from interstate; Andrew Khedoori offered me a show at 2SER-FM, where I learnt about some of the artists in this study, and where I had the good fortune to interview Dawn McCarthy; and Brendan Smyly and Diana Blom are valued colleagues of mine at University of Western Sydney who have consistently been up for robust discussions of research matters. Many thanks to you all. My friend Stephen Creswell’s amazing record collection has been readily available to me and has proved an invaluable resource. A hearty thanks! • Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hendrix Seretha D
Williams: Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hend Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hendrix Seretha D. Williams (3/6/2019) Most people in Augusta, GA, know Corey Washington. He is a popular history teacher, beloved by his students and their parents. He is a patron of music, attending local cultural events and supporting the burgeoning live music scene in the region. He is an independent author and expert on the life and music of Jimi Hendrix. Having seen him at the Augusta Literary Festival on multiple occasions and purchased one of his books on Hendrix for a friend, I decided to reach out to Mr. Washington for an interview on Hendrix, whom scholars describe as an icon of Afrofutur- ism. 1. How did you first become interested in Jimi Hendrix? I always have to mention the name of a disgraced individual Hulk Hogan, who was later exposed as a racist.
