It makes you feel like you’re still in a normal envi- ronment.” With the evacuation of Williams Lake rescind- ed, normalcy is slowly creeping back into the city of 10,000 in British Columbia’s Cariboo region. Okimawininew, a maintenance planner with 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in , along with 300 fellow soldiers are helping them get there, working side-by-side with the RCMP to ensure the safety of citizens as nearby forests con- tinue to burn. As with any member of the Forces, normalcy is something Okimawininew is expected to produce, but sometimes also asked to forfeit. A mother of two, she’s endured long absences from her two boys, a 3-year-old and a 12-year-old. She’s com- pleted two six-month tours of Afghanistan, trav- elled for training, moved around the country. The separations are hard, but her boys understand why. “They always miss me, but they know their Mom is doing something to help their country,” she says. “They’re proud of me, but they’re miss- ing their Mom so they’re sacrificing too.” In Williams Lake, small gestures from a grateful community go a long way to softening that sacri- fice. Thank you’s and handshakes are everywhere, and it seems like someone is always picking up the tab for coffee. Seeing the generosity of people touched by hardship reminds Okimawininew why the time away from home is time well spent. “It’s important to show my kids that what we do overseas is really good for the rest of the world, but that, sometimes, we have to do the same for Sgt Naomi Okimawininew, of Morinville, greets Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the Cariboo Memorial Recreation our own community.” Complex on July 31. He does not wish to see haskaps suffer the same fate as the saska- toon and currant berries’ industries in Alberta, so he works with Haskap Alber- ta and North 49 Fruit Corporation to support haskap growers and establish the industry standards required for successful marketing. “There’s a lot of information saying why haskaps are great from propaga- tors, plant breeders,” said Rosychuk. “We need information from producers.” He pointed out that growers getting into haskap production need to know what challenges and difficulties they may face and have a support system in place. “The biggest thing is education,” Rosychuk said. “The biggest threat to the industry is people not having a market set up.” He explained that when saska- toons and currants were the new industries many people planted orchards of them. When the fruit was ready, the farmers with markets set up sold their product and made enough money to stay in business. The producers who had no prepared markets undercut prices to move their fruit and make any bit of profit. “Most of those people have plowed under their fruit,” he said. He loves the haskap berry and does not wish to see its industry suffer the same fate. Rosychuk studied horticulture production at Olds College. Knowing he needed another income with which to set up his dream farm, he took a night course in welding. He is now a boiler maker-welder and works in the Fort McMurray area. The idea of Rosy Farms originated in 2005 when Rosychuk planted a test plot of sour cherries, currants, and haskaps on his Uncle Herb and Aunt Min- nie Cutts’ family farm. That plot has 200 haskap bushes, enough for acquiring a greater understanding of how the haskap grows and for experimenting with harvesting techniques and processing capabilities. When shopping for land for his own farm, Rosychuk searched the Edmon- ton region for land with a slope, a dugout and good organic matter and topsoil. What he found had “kind of crappy soil” but met his other criteria. In 2014 he purchased the 76 acre farm in Sturgeon County. The land had been tradition- ally farmed for decades, so he did soil testing and in 2015 seeded it with a cover crop of grasses and clovers. His intent is to have his farm become certified organic, so he uses Integrat- ed Pest Managements (IPM) for insect, disease and weed identification and control. Just inside the deer fence he put up around the perimeter of his farm Rosychuk planted flowering shelter belts of seabuckthorn, lilac and caragana to attract native pollinators, provide habitat for beneficial insects, catch snow and create a micro climate on the land. “Grant money has been a major blessing to me,” Rosychuk said. He accessed grants for the shelterbelts, business coaching and business skills. He applied composted manure to the areas the haskap bushes are planted on. They are in rows spaced 12 feet apart on a south facing slope. Each row is in plastic mulch and set up with drip irrigation, which Rosychuk calls his insurance. Andrew Rosychuk kneels beside a young haskap bush on Rosy Farms by Alcomdale. Rosychuk He, along with family and friends, planted 10,000 haskap bushes in 2016 is on the wide strip of grass and clover between the haskap rows which are lined with black and another 15,000 this year. Almost all are older varieties because the plants plastic mulch. are less expensive than the new varieties and have been around long enough to have varietal information available. Many of the new varieties have only been tested for two to three years. Rosychuk’s love of and passion for horticulture shows when he walks through his fledgling orchard. He picks ripe berries to eat, examines plants for trace mineral deficiencies or other problems, and watches for odd ball occur- rences such as a row of plants that started re-blooming in July. They normal- ly only bloom once per year, in May. “I love the biology,” he said. “This is what I’ve always wanted to do.” He intends to produce the highest quality fruit possible and develop a brand that builds Alberta’s market share. It’s an exciting time and place in the haskap industry. “Because it’s such a new industry, a new fruit in the province, I get the opportunity to set the stage for a whole new industry,” Rosychuk said. “25 years ago, the last time they did breeding work with saskatoons, I would have felt the same.” He sees the four aspects of a successful industry as production, harvesting & processing, marketing & sales, and distribution. “You can’t be good at all of them,” said Rosychuk. “It’s one thing to grow, I feel it’s the easiest. If you don’t have processing capability, what are you going to do with your fruit?” He plans to freeze his berries and sell them wholesale. To succeed at that, he is looking into getting Alberta’s first Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) pro- cessing facility. The industry needs to process in a fast paced, competitive Andrew Rosychuk (Center) speaks with participants at the orchard tour and haskap tasting he marketplace.
