10 When the Web became more present in educational institutions was normal: • teacher have an HTML page, • use email to answer questions from students, • sometimes creating and managing a community in a forum like SmartGroups, • provided your MSN address for synchronous conversations received the work on CD or by email.

11 Introduction to learning platforms

• What is it a Learning Platform? • What does it mean LMS? • What kind of advantages might I take from them? • How many LMS platforms are there? • Why Moodle? Introduction to learning platforms

• What is it a Learning Platform?

• A Learning Platform is a software that should help us to teach the contents of our subjects, distributing, compiling, sharing, sorting information shared with students or colleagues. Introduction to learning platforms

• What does it mean LMS?

• LMS stands for Learning Management System (some people uses VLE Virtual Learning Environments, but this concept is some kind different for us).

• Some people uses LCMS (Learn Content Management System), but nowadays are becoming the same thing

• A LMS helps us to manage information related with the organization of our courses, lectures, relations with students and so and so. Introduction to learning platforms

• What kind of advantages might I take from them?

Advantages: 1)I can have “all my information”, related with my subjects, in the same platform. 2)I can share the parts I want with my students or other colleagues. 3)I can maintain different versions of same things for different subjects. 4)I can use the resources available within the platform for my work. 5)I can use it wherever I go or whenever I want.

Disadvantages: 1)It exist many different platforms, with a different use (but same ideas). 2)I should try to know the best for me (normally I should use the one that my school provide). 3)Abuse of their use instead of real teaching. Now (with LMS)

• The e-learning platforms can cluster all these features, needs, strategies ...

and ... join several others, such as monitoring and recording the activities of actors in a course and their statistics, use of tools that allow assessment and self-assessment

stepping the issue of collaborative work at a distance.

16 For effective use of LMS (Learning Management Systems) - Interaction; - The contents need to be restructured (different characteristics of the teaching paradigm); - Motivating the community ; - Strategies depend on several factors (depending on the purpose of education and the characteristics of the people involved: - The age group is an illustrative example. The crossword module "hot potatoes" can be interesting and motivating for a student in the 9th grade, however can not be a proper activity for a module 2nd cycle (Masters). A Wiki can have disastrous and embarrassing consequences if used by teenagers uncivilized.

17 • How many LMS platforms are there? • It is difficult to know the exact number of LMS platforms that exist nowadays. • We can talk here about two very famous • (www.claroline.net) • Moodle (www.moodle.org) • FirstClass • ANGEL Learning • FrogTeacher • Apex Learning K-12 • Fronter • ATutor • ILIAS • Blackboard • Kaleidos • Bodington • Link on Learning • Buenas Fuentes) • LON-CAPA • Engrade • MOSYLE - Educational Platform for Tablets • • OLAT • ClassCentral • Ossett • Click-a-teacher • Paradiso LMS • CLIX • PEG • Desire2Learn • redAlumnos • Digilearn² • Project • Docebo • Scholar360 • Dokeos • Studywiz • eCollege • SWAD • E-doceo (es.e-doceo.net) • Teletop • Edoome • VClass • Edumate • WebCT Source: Wikipedia + own info Top LMS

26 Teaching & Learning

• Imagine that if you want to teach a certain pass rugby.

• We have several hypotheses:

27 Example 1: with a lot of words…

1. Develop the skill of spin passing on the run • The player reaches for the ball. Catching it early gives him more time on the ball to assess his options and gives the player outside him more time and space. • After catching the ball, it is repositioned in the hands. At the same time, the ball carrier is looking for the target presented by the receiver. • With the ball repositioned the player winds up by pulling the ball back. He opens up his hips by turning his upper body. This makes it easier to give an accurate pass out in front of the receiver. • The ball is released with a flick of the wrists and the passer’s hands follow through towards the target. Having already turned his hips slightly towards the receiver, he is now in a perfect position to follow his pass and support the new ball carrier. (site http://www.betterrugbycoaching.com/)

33 What about a Chemistry Lab?

• Not all schools have the chemistry laboratories and reagents are expensive. Nothing like an explanation through a free video. And you can stop, go backwards or forwards ...
