A TALE OF TWO PASSIONS: Crossing the Boundary between Math and Art Mathematics texts are filled with equations and formulas made with strange symbols that cause the average person to shudder and turn to other pursuits. But behind these strange formulas lies visual beauty beyond the imagination. People may be vaguely aware of the geometry in the beautiful art of early cultures, such as Islamic art, Celtic art and the art of some primitive people around the world. But in the newer branches of mathematics such as calculus, differential equations, topology and complex analysis the interpretation of formulas as color, shape and motion produces some astonishing beauty.

I am active in an international organization, “Bridges: Mathematical Connections in Art, Music and Science” which began as a small group of people in Kansas in 1998 and has grown to a huge international organization which meets once a year; this summer it met at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. One of the components of its yearly meetings is a Math-Art show, of which I am a co- organizer. In my talk I will show some of my favorite submissions to this show and a fantastic animation of the construction of a geometric tiling of the plane. Another yearly event is the Math-Art Exhibition at the joint meetings of the two largest mathematical associations in the US. I am also a co-organizer of this exhibition which has grown from a tiny handful of math-artists a few years ago to one of the most popular events of the Joint Meetings with prizes and publicity. I will show some of the prize-winning art from this exhibit.

I will also show some of my own recent work which deals with interpreting fluid flows from Differential Equations as artwork, some of it animated. The parameters in an equation can be used as
