Copper was found there in 1846 and the Strathalbyn Mine occupied this area in the 1850’s. Donald Gollan built the homestead and later in 1874, sold the property to William Marchant. He built up a sheep station of 16,000 acres which spread from Strathalbyn to the Bremer River and Angas Plains & to Commonella west of Strathalbyn. He bought up many farms of those who left Strathalbyn districts in 1870’s for the North, S.E & Victoria in the 1870’s exodus. The Homestead has gone but an old stone shed remains near the Burnside Creek that goes north/south through what is now, Burnside Park. The property was subdivided into 5 acre blocks in late 1970’s and called Burnside Park. When William Marchant died, the S.A Government purchased the whole Estate, surveyed and sub-divided it into farms for closer settlement agriculture. Burnside Homestead was then on Block 36. Ref.
