CAGED ron bars were the only things separating us. I He sat on the cell floor, leaning against the wall, in noth- ing but a pair of jeans. I glanced at the chain binding his wrists. With his head bowed, he looked exactly the same. But he’s not. I let my fingers curl around the wet bars. Several times Ua day, holy water rained down from the sprinklers in the ceiling. I fought the urge to unlock the door and let him out. “Thanks for coming.” He hadn’t moved, but I knew he didn’t need to see me to sense I was here. “No one else will.” “Everyone’s trying to figure this out. They don’t know what to do about—” The words caught in my throat. “About me.” He rose from the floor and walked toward me—and the bars separating us. 1 Unmarked_HCtextF1.indd 1 7/26/14 1:20:26 AM As he drew closer, I counted the links in the chain hanging between his wrists. Anything to keep from look- ing him in the eye. But instead of moving away, I gripped the bars tighter. He reached out and wrapped his hands around the metal above mine. Close but not touching. “Don’t!” I shouted. Steam rose from the cold- iron bars as the holy water seared his scarred skin. He held on too long, intentionally letting his palms burn. “You shouldn’t be here,” he whispered. “It’s not safe.” Hot tears ran down my cheeks. Every decision we’d made up to this point felt wrong: the chains coiled around his wrists, the cell doused in holy water, the bars keeping him caged like an animal. “I know you’d never hurt me.” The words had barely left my lips when Jared lunged at the bars, grabbing at my throat. I jumped back, his cold fingers grazing my skin as I slipped out of reach. “You’re wrong about that, little dove.” His voice was different. Laughter echoed off the walls and chills rippled through me. I realized what everyone else had known all along. The boy I knew was gone. The one caged before me was a monster. And I was the one who had to kill him. 2 Unmarked_HCtextF1.indd 2 7/26/14 1:20:26 AM SEVEN DAYS EARLIER Unmarked_HCtextF1.indd 3 7/26/14 1:20:26 AM Unmarked_HCtextF1.indd 4 7/26/14 1:20:26 AM 2. My eyes drift down to my Ushaking hand, and I realize why. I’m the one holding the match. I bolted upright in bed, my heart pounding. Another nightmare. Be a part of the Nation’s Premier Young Adult Book Festival! The second annual YALLFest will bring 45 top young adult writers, including 25 New York Times bestsellers, to Charleston, S.C., Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, 2012. In its inaugural year, the 2011 festival brought 1,000 fans to a one-block stretch of Upper King Street. Hordes of excited fans waited in lines to meet their favorite authors, almost all of the 13 panels and talks were at standing room only, and a literary marketplace connected fans with vendors and literacy groups. The day ended with a sold-out YA Smackdown, with teams of authors competing in hilarious storytelling games. (Team Reality took home the coveted Golden Pie Trophy in a highly controversial decision.) The festival returns in 2012 with double the writers. Based on the terrific reception from year one – we expect attendance to double in 2012. Attendee comments: “Make it longer – it’s wonderful!” “Hope this becomes an annual event.” “Yallfest is my Comicon!” “Thank y’all for doing this – it’s been such a fun day!” “Great fun! Hope to see it in town again next year!” “I can’t believe I got to meet Ellen Hopkins!” (pictured, below) YALLFest Facts: Date: Nov. 9 – 10, 2012 (Annually, second weekend in November. As a teenager, she read Saint Maybe by Anne Tyler and Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner; they were her first real exposure to the world of grown-up literature (that wasn’t things like Shakespeare or Hemingway, etc.) and both books changed her life. She started writing a lot of short stories and beginnings of novels that she never finished; she also, by her own criteria, wrote incredibly, incredibly bad poetry. She went to Brigham Young University, got a degree in English Teaching and taught high school English, first in upstate New York and then in Utah. Condie always wanted to be a writer, but as she grew older, it took a back seat to teaching.

With literature we can see human nature through tragedy and romance, joy and sorrow, in approval and denial, in moments of heroism and in moments of cowardice. Literary texts are supposed to be ideological in the sense that they cannot give us knowledge of the social formation; but they do give us something to equal importance in analyzing culture, an imaginary representation of real relations (Eagleton and Milne 392). In other words literary works represent human real life and social reality. There are a lot of occurrences as outlined by the author into a literary work. Literary work frequently seizes the pictures of society and depicts significant features about tradition, history, social anthropology, and political science in every period. Records of the traditional events are often supported with description about individual, family, or social behavior though society. Every period has specific features about family tradition principles influenced by society (Jana 1). Furthermore, family tradition is daily activities that are done repeatedly in a family. In the traditions there are usually magic, spirit, and texture to our everyday lives. Traditions and rituals often tell a story about a family; it can teach children where their family came from or give them insights into their cultural or religious history, it plays an important role in digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id F a z l i n a | 2 shaping a child’s personal identity (Cox 17).
