Nassau County Museum of Art Day Three, Tuesday: Aldred Mansion (St. Josaphat’s Monastery), King Zog's ruins, OHEKA Castle, and the Nassau County Museum of Art

St. Josaphat’s Monastery, also known as the Aldred Mansion In 1910 John E. Aldred, a public utilities magnate, William D. Guthrie, Charles H. Pratt, and John Paul Getty established an exclusive area called Lattingtown close to other millionaires of that period who populated this strip along the North Shore’s Gold Coast and built beautiful mansions. Today, few still stand as beautifully as St. Josaphat's Monastery.

King Zog's ancient ruins in the (Note: weather permitting) King Zog, the last monarch in Albania, fled after the Italian invasion of 1939 and lived in England, Egypt, and France in the years after. He acquired the 150-acre Knollwood Estate at Muttontown in 1951. But Zog never moved to the U.S. and the mansion lay abandoned. Its ruin offers a striking contrast to the history of our next castle's rescue and revival.

OHEKA Castle Tour and Lunch A century ago, financier and philanthropist built OHEKA CASTLE on the highest point on Long Island in Cold Spring Harbor. At the time of its construction, the French-style chateau was—and still is today—the second-largest private residence ever built in America. A tour is followed by lunch in the castle and a chance to meet the current owners and learn about their commitment to saving this beautiful historic property.

Nassau County Museum of Art is the former Frick "Clayton" Estate in Roslyn Harbor. Most of the Museum’s 145 acres originally belonged to William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), long-time editor of the Evening Post. The grounds developed by the Frick family were among the foremost landscapes in America. You are invited to an after hour’s Cocktail Reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres in the museum after a docent- led tour. Museum Director Dr. Charles Riley plans to join us for drinks and discussion.

Sagamore Hill, the "Summer Whitehouse" for T.R.

Coe Hall at Planting Fields Mill Neck Manor and School for the Deaf

Day Four, Wednesday: Planting Fields Arboretum including Coe Hall, Theodore Roosevelt’s and Mill Neck Manor

The day begins with a tour of the Coe Hall Historic House Museum at the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park. Located in Oyster Bay and originally landscaped by the Olmsted Brothers, the grounds feature 409 acres of greenhouses, rolling lawns, formal gardens, woodland paths and outstanding plant collections

From 1902 to 1909, Sagamore Hill served as the summer White House, where President Theodore Roosevelt conducted affairs of state. In the small library off the entrance, he hosted delegates from Russia and Japan, who resolved their conflict and secured a Nobel Peace Prize for the President. Up on the third floor, in the combination gun room and office, Roosevelt scribbled furiously, turning out books like “African Game Trails” and “Progressive Principles.”

Mill Neck Manor, a majestic Tudor Revival mansion, is set on an 86-acre scenic estate overlooking the Long Island Sound. The 34-room mansion, once called Sefton Manor, was owned by Robert Leftwich Dodge and his wife, the cosmetics heiress Lillian Sefton Dodge. Your visit supports the Mill Neck Family Organizations' programs and services for the deaf and goes toward the preservation of the historic Manor House and beautiful grounds.

Tonight's farewell dinner takes place at Ocean, one of Long Island’s favorite waterfront restaurants. The food is delicious and is enjoyed along with panoramic views of the Long Island Sound at sunset, showcasing the ageless beauty and attraction of the Gold Coast.
