Ever since its birth in 1972, the IGCP has been heavily involved, by definition and "ex officio", in stratigraphic correlation. A remarkable variety of approaches and techniques of cor relation have been applied by the various IGCP projects deal ing with widely different geological formations of the Earth, ranging from eco- and chemostratigraphy through magnetnstra- tigraphy and seismostratigraphy to geomathematics. However, biostratigraphy has maintained its priority wherever
