Museum - Museum as a definition, is a non – profit permanent institute in the service of Society and its development, open to public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of human and its environment for the purpose of education , study and enjoyment. (ICOM 2007)

District Museum Mangaldoi – on the river bank of Mangola as referred in early literatures Yoginitantra and Kalika Puran the District Museum Mangaldoi, which is under the Directorate of Museums, Assam, was established on 03rd of March, year 1987. It has been temporarily functioning in a rented house at Bhebarghat, which was previously known as Bandarchoa, surrounded by various educational institutes like Girls Collage, Law Collage, Mangaldoi Collage, Collegiate High School etc. The museum is situated only a few minutes distance from the ASTC station and adjusent to the public bus stand.

After serving 25years in a temporary accommodation, the District Museum, Mangaldoi has finely got its permanent shed. For better, scientific and permanent display of museum collection and office use, in the month of November year 2010, the new RCC building and museum campus was officially handed over to the District Museum Mangaldai. The new Museum building site is situated near by roadside of National Highway no.52, build in a two acre Government land, very near by the South corner of the Mangaldoi Collage. This new RCC Building, which is house of three galleries and two office rooms as well as for future development, the building has the provisions of extensions further. Under the financial year 2012-13, shifting of the Museum from the rented place to its new location for better permanent, authentic and scientific display and exhibition of museum collection the fund allotment an amount of Rs. 10,0000.00/- (Rupees ten Lacs) has been sanctioned and the official procedure for the mentioned work are going on.

Aim of the District Museum, Mangaldoi – in the year c. 1814 AD established as the capital at Mohanpur, Devaranga or Darranga now known as Darrang by the Koch King Dharma Narayana, the District has its own historical importance. By collecting archaeological, historical and tangible & intangible cultural objects of people of the District and near by places; in the mean of exhibit them for the purpose of study, research and entertainment for the public. And to avoid decay and preserve those for the future generation by mean of putting those antiquities under one roof is the main of aim of District Museum Mangaldoi. Each objects of the District Museum posses historic, archaeological as well as artistic value which helps us to to understand the cultural diversity of the State and the region.

Museum Collection Starting with a few objects the District Museum, Mangaldoi after 25 years at present the museum is having more 600 objects of various subjects by mean of purchase and donation from various sources. The collection includes copper & Silver Coins, Copper inscriptions of Ahom rulers, Stone, metal as well as wooden sculptures, Silver; Value – One rupee

Paper & Palm leaf manuscripts with Sanskrit as well as old Assamese scripts and languages, musical instruments, textiles & jeweleries along with day to day used items of of various communities of the society which have been loosing their importance day by day.
