COO-EE November 2020 [email protected]

REMEMBRANCE DAY A wreath laying ceremony to commemorate Remembrance Day will be held at the Edithburgh War Memorial at 11am on Wednesday 11th November.

Well done to Kayleigh May (Kadina) and Shineah Goody (Edithburgh) on a great first season of football playing with Henley Sharks Division 1 Blue. The girls had a great season with their new club Henley Sharks. They were unable to continue their football career on Yorkes as their age doesn’t ena- ble them to continue in the boys league. The girls had a great year made it to their grand final but unfortunately lost by 4 points to their rival Henley Sharks White. Sun- day 18th October was Henley Sharks Division 1 Blue presentations. Kayleigh May 3rd Best and Fairest, Shineah Goody Best & Fairest, and Henley Sharks over- all Junior Girls Club Champion. Shineah was also SANFL U16 Division 1 runner up best and fairest for the league. Both Kayleigh and Shineah have had a busy year as not only playing for Henley Sharks they both were in the U16 Port Power next Generation academy, winning 3 of 3 against the Crows Academy. Early No- vember both have an invitation to training sessions with SANFLW Woodville West Torrens. Good luck to you both for you future pathways.

Birds of the Heel Jeffrey Robinson House Sparrow

The House Sparrow is a common urban bird in . These little brown birds were introduced and spread across east- ern Australia. It is hard to believe that the House Sparrow is be- coming rare in parts of the United Kingdom from whence it was introduced into South Australia by early settlers. Flocks of the House Sparrow are common in Edithburgh. They feed on our food scraps, seeds and insects. Indeed, it is often amusing to watch Sparrows welcome a parking car as they hurry to get the insects that have been squashed on the bonnet and grill. Three members of the sparrow family were brought to Australia: The House Sparrow, European Hedge Sparrow and the Dunnart. The House Sparrow is the only one that I have seen in Edithburgh. The European Hedge Sparrow is very similar to the House Spar- row. It is slightly smaller and the males have a distinguishing dark ear mark. Size ~15cm

Tues the 20th October Visit to Pt Victoria Museum

A warm, calm day ensured our wellbeing!.... for an excursion to Pt Victoria. Nearly fifty people gathered at the Museum, which was the original harbour masters office, brought out from the U.K. by ship, now comfortably sitting at the entrance to the jetty. Coffee, tea and biscuits were enjoyed as we listened to Elaine-Hall introduce the unique shipping culture of this area, then as the museum is very small, and we were so- cially distancing, people stag- gered their choices, either a walk on the cliff top or jetty, or delved into the impressive displays inside. The saying is good things come in small packages, proven here by clever use of space, with exhib- its well lit by plenty of natural sunlight. A short walk and we were inside the hotel for a pleasant lunch, followed by a wonderful talk by Stuart Moody, author of Port Victoria Ships and Shipwrecks on all the shipwrecks in this area ABOUT TOWN *Rachel Goody has had a fox visit her back yard two nights in a row and had her beloved chickens killed.

*Scott Oschmanns, from Edithburgh North has a couple of photos he has taken of a wombat while he was out walking his dogs behind the cemetery.

*The Edithburgh Noticeboard had one of it's glass doors smashed in gusty weather one night. Progress have kindly offered to pay for repairs, so we are in the process of organizing that.

*Make sure you are registered to vote in the Progress annual elections. Registrations need to be renewed every year. Forms available in the Post Office

Edithburgh Bowls Club Dinners ALL WELCOME Come along and support the club. Great food and fun at a very reasonable price Saturday 14th November 6.30pm Saturday 5th December 7pm “NUGGETT’S NOSH” MORE OF THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN WEBER

The great Aussie Weber has been around since the late 50s, but really came into its own in the 70s, then as we entered the new millennium, it got tossed to the back of the shed to collect dust, while the Weber Qs, and larger and bigger BBQs took over, and once again, the blokes took the tongs, stood around and turned a snag or two, told large, big waffles and the woman did the rest. Believe when I say I’m not a femi- nist, but I’ll be damned if I’ll let a bloke take credit for a bbq I’ve done all the bloody work for, so stand up, grab the Weber from the shed, clean it up with hot soapy water and a wire brush. It may look a bit crusty on the outside, but unless it’s got gaping holes in it, it’ll do, so c’mon, let’s go Webering again. These set of recipes will work on a bbq, Weber Q, simple firepit, or a Weber, for bigger joints of meat, fish, chicken etc, use the indirect method of heating, but for skewers, steaks, and general BBQ foods, direct heating is fine.

“CHICKEN MONTERAY” INGREDIENTS:- 4 whole chicken breasts, tenderloin and skin removed, 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/2 cup white wine,( go on, then, have a slurp yourself or two), 2 cloves crushed garlic, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 ripe avocados, 4 hard boiled eggs, a side salad to be proud of, crusty sour dough.

METHOD:- cut the chicken open and flatten out with a mallet or rolling pinto about1cm(1/2”),combine white wine, olive oil, salt, garlic and marinate chicken in it, bung this in the fridge for an hour. Peel avocados and sprinkle with lemon juice, (stops from going brown). Now pop an egg inside each avocado half and wrap the chicken around it, try to keep it neat, secure with toothpicks. Pop in an aluminium shallow tray, bung in the weber with the lid on and vents open,

TANTARA HONEY DRESSING:- 2/3 cup of good mayo, 1/4 cup veg oil, 2 tbsps. Honey, 1tbsp Dijon mus- tard, 1/3 cup minced onion, 1 tsp of both parsley and lemon juice. Mix well and set aside.

30 mins later check the chicken, remove the tray, and place on grill to brown off and mark well. Serve chicken with tantara sauce and side salad. Man does this taste good, have another glass of wine, you’ve done well.

EASY PEASEY WEBER

A great piece of steak, like Scotch fillet( my fav), a medium size spud that’s been cooked in the nuke (microwave), sour cream, 1 small chilli finely diced, seeds removed, and a pinch of cumin, salt and pepper. Cook your steak to your liking, mix the sour cream, chilli etc and open up the spud, find a quiet spot in the garden, crack a brewski, and wonder what your mates are eating.

HAPPY NOSHING FOLKS

8852 6023 EDITHBURGH INSTITUTE COMMITTEE INC. Our committee is pleased to report on recent activities in the Edithburgh Institute

**BOOK LAUNCH EVENT “The Godmothers”, presented and discussed by author Monica McInerney, held at the Institute on October 4th was enjoyed by those that attended. Thankyou to the supporters of this shared event that raised $1,000.00 for the Institute and $1,000.00 for the Friends of the Library. Restricted by Covid, how to format this event added additional planning time and effort but the result was evident. Institute Committee Members gave 100% support and worked hard in conjunction with the Friends of the Library to make it the success it was. We are also most appreciative for the donations of food and time that were readily offered by people in the community. Our sincere thanks to all. We also appreciated the prompt mowing of the side lawn by Council.

**INTERIOR PAINTING has been completed. The stage curtains had to be taken down to accommodate the painting so on Saturday10th October four “agile youngsters”, Neil, Keryn, Phil and John successfully tackled this task. The curtains, heavy and dusty have now been vacuumed and rehung with some assistance from Council workers. Great painting by Ian, Cody, and Bailey. Thank you to the Y.P. Council for funding this work. Numerous volunteer hours have been spent in shifting, lifting, cleaning, replacing and organising to get the Institute “ship shape “ again . How fresh the building looks!!

**ELECTRICAL WORK…..supply and installation of new LED battens to replace all existing fluros as well as 2 remote control dimmable floodlights, with upgrade to electrics where necessary has been completed by Tape Electrical. The cost of this $4,125.00

** Our committee strives to maintain and improve the Institute so that it serves our community well. Support and ideas for improvements are always welcome. Next mreeting 18th November 2020, 7.30pm Beth Braund. Secretary. Edithburgh Institute Committee Inc.

Did you know that the Edithburgh has many great exhibits and artefacts!! We have an extensive filing system as well. Part of the files concentrate on events, organisations and businesses etc. The other files relate to families who live or have lived in the town and district over the last 150 years. Contrib- utors are continually donating family histories, family trees, copies of documentation regarding births, deaths, mar- riages and service history. We have also been given many eulogies and funeral memorial cards and photos. Many of our emails, calls and visits are from someone trying to trace down past family. Perhaps you could find out or add to a family file or start a new one.
