PROTECTION STRATEGY INFORMATION Tidal Range (FT): Average Current (KTS): Ease of Protection: Min. Boom Length (FT): 7,200 Boom Type: Harbor Booming Method: Deflection, Protection/Exclusion

Protection Strategy: Please reference the South Sound Tidal Inlet Protection Strategy for booming strategy depiction. TIPS require 1,000' deflection boom and 6,200' of protection boom. Place another 400' exclusion boom at mouth of creek. No dispersants or in-situ burning Minimum resources needed for on water recovery: 2 shallow water skimmers. 5,000' deflection boom, size and type to be determined by location of spill and weather conditions to include wind and sea state. Response strategy to be based on over flight observations and trajectory modeling if available. Availability of collection/deflection booms and weather/tidal conditions will affect tactics and resource protection strategies. Protection will be focused on choke points to prevent contamination of sensitive areas. Near shore, consider sorbent boom or snare boom deployed by shallow water vessels to protect sensitive shorelines.

PROTECTION STRATEGY INFORMATION Tidal Range (FT): Average Current (KTS): Ease of Protection: Min. Boom Length (FT): 5,000 Boom Type: Booming Method: Deflection, Protection/Exclusion

Protection Strategy: 5,000' shoreline protection booming. No dispersants or in-situ burning. Minimum resources needed for on water recovery: 2 shallow water skimmers.

Report produced by Florida FWC - Fish and Wildlife Research Institue on: Thursday, May 17, 2012 For additional information, please contact FWC-FWRI Center for Spatial Analysis (727) 896-8626 INLET SUMMARY SHEET

SITE: South Sound Creek, Monroe County, Florida

DATE AND TIME OF ORIGINAL FIELD SURVEY [TIDE]: 23 June 1994; 1300 [Low @ 1522 (-0.6); Mosquito Bank]

UPDATED: In October 2011 using imagery collected in 2010 and 2011.

RANKING (DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY): (see ranking scale)

B.

PRINCIPAL RESOURCES AT RISK: Mangroves, wading birds, and seabirds. For further information refer to the recent ESI map and data and the GRP.

PRELIMINARY PROTECTION STRATEGY: Use a combination of deflection boom and protection boom to divert oil away form the main inlet channel and place a short line of protection boom across the main inlet channel itself where it exits the mangroves. Also extend double lines of protection boom both north and south of the inlet to protect the extensive mangrove shorelines. Open water collection would be the most efficient means of recovering spilled product in this area. Therefore, we are proposing that skimmer systems be placed outside the main inlet area to do open water collection.
