Lessons from Disney Disney is a household name, known around the world for its theme parks, movies and loveable characters. Since it was founded in 1923, the company has been focused on creating magical experiences for people, whether they’re visiting a theme park, watching a Disney film, or staying in a Disney hotel. For almost 100 years, Disney has overcome failure and experienced tremendous growth. It has had to grow and evolve to deal with market challenges, advances in technology and changing customer demands. What has remained constant through this time, however, is Disney’s commitment to pioneering innovation, leveraging opportunities, and evolving their strategy to meet changing market conditions. Establishing the Disney brand Disney enjoyed tremendous success during its first 30 years. In 1928, Disney created the first film with synchronised sound, and in 1937 it created the first full length feature animated film. Both projects were world firsts, establishing Disney as an innovation leader (before innovation was a thing!). After a decline in success during the Second World War, Walt Disney recognised the need for new ways to share content and grow revenue and breathe new life back into the company. In 1950, the company made the leap to television with the release of One Hour in Wonderland, a promotion for the upcoming film, Alice in Wonderland. Disney and television In July 1954, Walt Disney started building Disneyland, and a year and a day after construction started, the park was opened. To try and recoup some of the US$17 million build cost, Disney sought to leverage his earlier television success and bring his beloved theme park to people’s homes.

It’s the special company that delivers in a bad economic environment. At a time when the U.S. has been weighed down by its slowest recovery since the Great Depression, when Europe’s currency threatens its union and, I might add when our critics flood the field with stories that refuse to move beyond the misdeeds at two of our papers in Britain, I am delighted to report something about News Corporation you Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer might not know from the headlines: News Corporation In 2012, for the second year in a row, we have brought our stockholders double-digit growth in total segment operating income. FOR THE SECOND We accomplished this because we do not consider ourselves a conventional YEAR IN A ROW, company.

  • Media Ownership Chart
In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth. • Wheeler Dealers
MONTI SAYS, KEEP ON TRUCKIN´ If you think globally, watch what you do locally. that was the message from Brussels last week as European Commission competition czar Mario Monti disallowed the takeover by Swedish truckmaker Volvo of its national competitor Scania. He banned the deal, not out of any concern that the resulting firm would dominate the European Union's total truck market, but because he believes it would stifle competition in Scandinavia. That argument seemed to fly in the face of the Commission's promotion of the E.U. as an integrated market-and its insistence that European firms have to adjust to a global marketplace. "We've always been told that there's a single market, but this ruling says it's national markets that matter," says Thierry Proteau, spokesman for the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. "It's a disturbing paradox." In reaching the controversial but widely expected decision, Monti argued that the customer rather than the producer has to define the relevant market. A merged Volvo-Scania would have controlled some 90% of the Swedish market for heavy trucks and roughly the same proportion of the city bus market in Finland and Ireland. The fact that it would hold only some 31% of the European market as a whole offers scant solace to Swedish truck buy- ers, suggested Monti. They tend to look no further than their local dealerships-overwhelmingly Scania and Volvo-when they buy, the Commission's investigation found. Leif Johansson, Volvo's CEO, said that by judging the deal on those narrow local standards, the Commission's ruling "seem[s] to go against the basic concept of the common market." The decision leaves Volvo back where it was in January 1999 when it sold its passenger car division to Ford for $5.8 billion: cash-rich and keen to buy rather than be boughtunless, of course, the price is right.

  • Liberty Global's Australian Subsidiary AUSTAR Receives a Non-Binding
Liberty Global’s Australian Subsidiary AUSTAR Receives a Non-Binding and Conditional Acquisition Proposal from FOXTEL Englewood, Colorado – May 25, 2011: Liberty Global, Inc. (“Liberty Global”) (NASDAQ: LBTYA, LBTYB and LBTYK) announced today that its 54.2%-owned subsidiary, AUSTAR United Communications Limited (“AUSTAR”), has received an indicative, non-binding and conditional proposal (“Proposal”) from FOXTEL to acquire 100% of AUSTAR for a price of 1.52 Australian dollars (AUD) in cash per share. A copy of AUSTAR’s release to the Australian Securities Exchange is set forth below. The Proposal values AUSTAR at AUD 2.5 billion (including net debt of AUD 525 million at March 31, 2011), representing an enterprise value multiple of approximately 10 times AUSTAR’s consolidated operating cash flow (as customarily defined by Liberty Global) for the 12 months ended March 31, 2011. Assuming definitive agreements are reached on the indicative terms and the conditions to closing are satisfied, Liberty Global would realize gross proceeds of AUD 1.0 billion ($1.1 billion based on the exchange rate at May 24, 2011) for its 688.5 million AUSTAR shares. In light of the non-binding and conditional nature of the Proposal, no assurance can be given that the Proposal will lead to a definitive transaction. Further, to the extent a definitive transaction is entered into, no assurance can be given that the conditions to closing that definitive transaction will ultimately be satisfied. Liberty Global is being advised by Allen & Overy in connection with this Proposal. About Liberty Global, Inc. Liberty Global is the leading international cable operator offering advanced video, voice and broadband internet services to connect its customers to the world of entertainment, communications and information.
