CANTERBURY COLLEGE SPORT TAS Sport Reports Term 1 Week 5 2018

CRICKET First XI Canterbury won the toss and elected to bat on a that looked a good track. Unfortunately, with the exception of Noah Rooney who scored a competent 26 runs in good time, none of the batsmen really got going. Luke Bayless was the only other batsman to make a contribution with 9 runs. With the assistance of 25 extras the final total was 76 runs in 27.3 overs. Westmac lost their first, and only, wicket with the score on 10 when Lachlan Wilson, had one of their openers caught trying to hook and finished with the figures of 6 overs, 1 wicket for 23. Westmac reached the target in the 13th over and won the game by 9 . Mr Laurie Maetam Coach

Third XI The Canterbury Third XI team travelled to West Moreton Anglican College (WMAC) last Saturday. There had been quite a lot of rain the night before, however the grounds and pitch were in great condition for the match. WMAC won the toss and elected to bat first. The WMAC openers got off to a flying start and were 0/22 after the first two overs. Matthew Erickson took a vital wicket in the third over and we were able to slow down the opposition’s run rate from that point. WMAC was assisted by some very ordinary fielding and catching by the Canterbury team and managed to establish a realistic total of 97 runs before they were all out in their final allotted over. Best for Canterbury was Matthew Erickson 3/20 and Jack Humrich 2/20. The Canterbury run chase started off poorly in terms of wickets lost as we were 2/12 at the end of the second over. From that point Canterbury was able to build a 75 run partnership between Ben Smith (27) and Alex Littleproud (20 n.o.). The score was assisted greatly by the WMAC sundries which contributed 34 runs to the total. The loss of 3 wickets in the 16th over seemed to swing the momentum towards WMAC as Canterbury were slightly ahead of the required run rate and appeared to be cruising to victory before losing those wickets. Some resolute batting from Alex and Blake (Iceman) Roesler took the score to 91 after 19 overs. Some wayward bowling in the last over and a boundary from Blake left Canterbury level with 2 balls to play in the match. First ball was a dot ball and then a Blake single off the final sealed the win. Once again the team would like to thank the Parents for their support and particularly Mr Christian-Greenwood for acting once again as scorer. Mr Ray Stanley Coach

Intermediate Seconds The Intermediate Seconds Boys Cricket Team had a tough game against a strong West MAC team but came out learning plenty and with confidence after a few strong performances. The team collapsed early to 4/6 and looked set to get out for a tiny total, but some brave tail-end performances took them to a respectable 40. Jashay Chetty top scored with 6 while Geoffrey Bladon batted for 40 balls - while only scoring three runs, he helped edge the score up. In reply, the boys took a chunk out of the WestMAC top order, reducing them to 3/5 through great opening bowling from Lachlan McIntyre and James Carter, with Lachlan taking 2/3. WestMAC's next two batsmen steadied the ship and took them to a 7-wicket win. Mr Shannon Blackmore Coach

Intermediate Thirds It was a challenging day for the Intermediate 3rds. West Moreton Anglican College came out firing with a targeted bowling attack that our batters struggled with. We managed to battle through and finished with a total of 44 – with Oliver Sunebeck scoring 19 of these with an impressive four boundaries. Our bowlers were focused and ready to try to limit WMAC’s total; however, we were hampered by some inconsistencies in our attack which resulted in a number of wides. WMAC made the required runs quite comfortably; however, our boys put in a valiant effort. Mrs Shona Sunebeck Manager

BASKETBALL

Firsts Even though the Firsts Team did not get the win, it was the best game we have played all season! Congratulations to Holly Anstee for making her debut game in Firsts a great one. We played great as a team, executed the plays and had a strong defensive presence all game. Unfortunately for us, West Moreton Anglican College had a team that punished us after every turn over by finishing their shots. WMAC hardly missed, but that did not stop us from staying together as a team and running hard until the last buzzer. Congratulations to the girls’ for their efforts. I am extremely proud of how they are coming together as a team! Miss Bridget O’Brien Coach

Seconds On the weekend, the Second Girls’ Basketball Team faced an evenly matched West Moreton Anglican College. After a week off with the bye, the girls came into the game with heaps of energy and enthusiasm. The girls strong man on man defence, coupled with their fast pace made scoring opportunities for the opposition difficult. The girls should be proud of the win and their continued improvement throughout the season. Miss Jessica Bohan Coach

Year 10 The Year 10’s did not have a great game on the weekend, but were able to come away with the win. Congratulations to Irene Irankunda and Daniella Spink for coming on and giving the team some energy with their efforts defensively. We have a lot to work on in training. Miss Bridget O’Brien Coach

Year 8 Canterbury defeated West Moreton Anglican College. Outside in the heat against a determined opposition it looked as though it was going to be a tough morning. West Mac started quickly and soon led 6-2 as a result of a number of long passes and fast breaks down the court. We seemed confused on defence and weren’t staying close to our opponent and they were good at finding the gaps and the unguarded player. After a timeout and a check of our opponents we started to play strong defence and pass quickly in offence, as a result we shut down their scoring and found the gaps ourselves. At quarter time, we had earned a slender lead and were ahead 9-6. In the 2nd quarter West Mac fought back and aggressively attacked the ball – on numerous occasions we had the ball taken from us, as they applied the pressure. However, it was very pleasing to see that we responded well to this challenge. We continued to run hard both ways and held West Mac to 2 points for the quarter. This was a critical turning point in the game and by half time we had opened up a 20 point lead with the score 28-8. In the hot conditions the 2nd half was a test of our commitment and fitness. All players did an excellent job and we steadily extended the lead to eventually win 52-14. It was another excellent win and the girls should all be congratulated on their effort. Well done to Ema-Lamei, Kadasha, Vicki, Baylee, Tahmira, Jaimee (first game back after injury) and Madisen (who had just arrived back from overseas). Mr John Cantwell Coach

Year 7 Navy On the weekend Year 7 Navy Basketball Girls travelled to West Moreton Anglican College. The girls played extremely well winning the game 27-6. Building on previous weeks games the girls are really starting to gel, sharing the ball and defending really well. Great work Girls. Mr Christian Johnstone Coach

VOLLEYBALL

Seconds On the weekend we played against West Moreton Anglican College at their home ground, winning 3-0. The players were comprised of Caleb Richardson, Arya Assarinaeini, Hamish Harlen, Lachlan James, Jesse Hendrickx, Leonardo and Keagan Dell. We unfortunately started the game off with a yellow card, for certain teammates hitting across the line in the warmup. None the less, everyone played extremely well, especially Leonardo who hit some game winning spikes. The team had very good composition across the court, the ball was almost always returned from the pass hitter. The game helped the team build their confidence for the upcoming game next week against St Paul’s. Good luck everyone next week. Mr Andrew Porter Volleyball Coordinator

Year 10 Our game on the weekend was a win for Canterbury 2-1. The first set was a win, however it was a win that could have been a lot quicker. Lack of communication was a major factor that impacted the loss of points for the first and second set and it also took players some time to get into the game (they were not in a game mindset yet). The second set was better than the previous set as more communication was happening. The final set was a loss however as near the end, communication started diminishing and more points were loss due to confusion on court regarding who was receiving and who the setter was. Positioning was also something that majority of people were confused about because it was something that hasn't really been focused on in detail. Mr Andrew Porter Volleyball Coordinator

Year 9 Navy What a fantastic game. We played West Moreton Anglican College on Saturday and we were in front by two sets with that last set a tie at 24 which didn’t settle until Westmac won at 27: 26. Charlie Dean saved most of the close shaves at the net with a quick flick of the wrist. Anderson Som and Zy Gonzaga showed some wonderful talent diving for the ball on more than one occasion and getting it up for a set. It was a great game to watch with most parents from both sides crowding around to see the action. Brilliant work gentlemen. Mrs Yvette O’Keefe Manager

Year 9/10 Red Last week, the lads were made to forfeit and technically lose a game in which they won 3-0. This week, they were eager to win a game 3-0 and actually come away with a win – which they did! Some great sportsmanship and excellent serving sprees helped them claim the victory. Mr Jason Baber Coach

Year 8 The boys made the trip out to West Moreton Anglican College early Saturday morning to play under the warm sun. CC took the first set, and only narrowly lost the second set due to some service errors. Unfortunately, the third set was also stolen from us, but we made sure we didn’t go down without a fight! Mr Jason Baber Coach

Year 7 This week the Canterbury Year 7 Volleyball Team travelled to West Morton Anglican College. Their game began early at 8am, and this team were looking for their first win. Early in the first set the boys’ had a comfortable lead and ending up winning the first set. In the second set some good serving from Hunter and Jarred gave the team a good lead, however towards the back end of the set a few silly errors let the Westmac team come back and win the second set 26-24. The same silly errors gave the Westmac team confidence and they won the third set 25-22. Overall the Canterbury team did well and will try again next week to get their first win. The team is ready to beat the Westmac team next time around. Let’s go Canterbury Jack Henry Captain
