Once again the successful Abingdon Food and Drink Festival will be held at the Miele centre in Abingdon on Sunday 7th June between 10am and 4pm. It combines a relaxed village fete atmosphere for the whole family with exciting food sensations from Britain and around the world. Explore around fifty food and drinks stalls located around a large green. Buy food and drink from a wide variety of vendors and enjoy a picnic on one of the many garden benches. Enjoy scintillating cooking demonstrations from seven expert celebrity chefs in Miele’s state of the art demonstration kitchens. Savour cheese and wine from Italy and Portugal with a knowledgeable presenter. There is even provision for sheltering from a summer shower if the weather is not brilliant! The first Abingdon Food and Drink Festival, in 2014, was a huge success. An estimated 1500 visitors enjoyed exploring the thirty food and drinks stalls in glorious June sunshine. Miele hosted the event and provided the perfect setting on their wide lawn where families relaxed with great local food and drink. Children decorated cupcakes, painted pottery and played games in the warm afternoon sunshine whilst adults listened to local choirs. Come along to the 2015 event to enjoy the same relaxed, village fete like atmosphere. This is a charity event and proceeds will be going to support the work of The Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper and local charity SeeSaw.

Family fun at the Cornbury Music Festival

There is a reason Cornbury Music Festival is so popular with families. It’s not just that it’s one of the safest most relaxed festivals in the country, nor that there’s music to appeal to all ages, a great range of child-friendly food and quiet camping. It’s the fantastic Kids’ Zone with activities to suit all ages running throughout each day of the festival: things to watch, things to join in with, things to have a go at, things to listen to, things to throw around, and quiet things - musical moments and gentle yoga. The Kids’ Zone is a colourful, creative, friendly space right in the middle of the festival, in sight of the main stage, so families can drop in and out whilst seeing all the festival highlights; and, unlike other festivals, all activities are free and there is no need to book in advance, just turn up and join in. Spread over three tents and an open area, the wide mix of activities means there is something for all ages on the go all the time - activities to engage and inspire, whether for a few minutes between acts or for a whole afternoon. From Clay Modelling and Lantern Making to Circus Crafts and Bollywood Dancing - plus knitting, the new rock and roll! New highlights to this year include Marky J’s Monkey Magic Show - a marvellous mix of puppets, magic and circus; Dizzy O’Dare and The Big Balloon Experiment - an amazing show featuring a VERY big balloon; and the truly nutty Professor Pumpernickel with the greatest show on earth! Kids can learn to play the ukulele with Sarah Kelly, join in Miniature Music sessions, or Songs For Kids with Nick Cope, find their inner rhythm at the Drumming workshops or pick up new moves with Sohan Kailey’s Bhangra, Bollywood and Indian Dance lessons or get crafty in the craft and making tent. As always world class street performers invade the Festival site. Ones to watch out for this year include Loz Because’s Walkabout Hula Hoop Show, Creature Encounter’s larger than life exotic avian amigos Squawk with their inquisitive beaks and joyful squawks; and leading tightrope artist, Dizzy O’Dare’s innovative tightwire shows, The Airettes and Lumi. Abbey buildings repaired Even the oldest of buildings are not immune to the ravages of time and recently, the Abbey buildings has started to look a little worse for wear in places. However, the Friends of Abingdon Civic Society have come to the rescue and made sure that the historic Abbey buildings will live to see many more days yet. The British weather throws quite a lot at the Long Gallery, which was built back in the late 15th century. A part of the Checker end had eroded so badly that there was an area of approximately 25 meters square that needed to be replaced. There was also quite a lot of foliage growth on the ornate chimney which needed to be removed. Both of these tasks have now been completed and the work was carried out by English Heritage. This means the integrity and appearance of the building have been preserved for many years to come. It is thought the Long Gallery was built to accommodate guests visiting the Abbey. After the dissolution of the monasteries it was used as living quarters before being converted into a brewery in the late 16th century. The Long Gallery now hosts local events and can be hired for private gatherings as well. The Friends of Abingdon was formed in 1944 and secured funds to buy all the Abbey buildings, some of which were due for demolition. The Long Gallery was acquired in 1948 along with several other buildings and were restored to their former glory. The society now maintains all of the buildings, which are now classified as an Ancient Monument.

Have you found people mumble a lot recently? Maybe your family keep turning the sound down on the television when you are watching it? Are you struggling to understand people at parties? do you suffer from tinnitus? All of these are a sign that your hearing may not be what it should be. But where do you go to get a test?

The Oxford Hearing Centre is a totally independent hearing aid dispensing practice that specialises in individually designed hearing health care rehabilitation, auditory training programme, and hearing instruments not available through the NHS. You are guaranteed completely impartial and professional advice for a complete and holistic solution to your hearing difficulty. Oxford Hearing Centre is able to select systems and instruments from a range of internationally recognised manufacturing companies worldwide to ensure that you can confidently receive the most up to date help available. All new technologically innovative hearing instruments are assessed and evaluated very carefully before they are included to ensure they are reliable and of good quality before they are offered at the Oxford Hearing Centre. There are many different reasons for acquiring hearing impairment, and the correct solution to an individual’s needs is equally varied. That is why it is of the utmost importance to have your hearing properly assessed and evaluated thoroughly before a decision is made about which hearing system and rehabilitation programme is the most appropriate for you. On many occasions, it is a build-up of wax preventing the sound from reaching your eardrum in the first place. It is also the main limiting factor to the continued satisfactory performance and operation of a hearing aid and up to 80% of all hearing aid repairs are as a result of wax ingression to the device. The Oxford Hearing Centre has a dedicated and fully equipped treatment room for the provision of ear-canal examination using a video-otoscopic camera, excessive earwax can be removed safely and effectively either by specialist water irrigation system, or by an instrument under the camera.

Your hearing is as important as your vision. Noel Fitzpatrick knew that veterinary medicine was his calling from an early age. Growing up on a rural farm in Northern Ireland, animals were his first friends. Today, running a successful practice in Surrey and at the helm of TV show The Supervet, he still adores his four legged companions. “I much prefer spending time in the company of animals because they don’t judge you,” he says. “They allow you to be yourself, they give unconditional love - and most human beings are incapable of love without conditions.” 10% By age 11, Fitzpatrick was coming to realise that animals weren’t being given a fair deal. “I was OFF looking at how humanity had got so much from animals over the years ... numerous drugs and * Any new Scooter if you bring this ad into store. It’s about funding projects that help study disease that attacks both humans and animals - if you fund research that helps a dog and a human at the same time then that’s far superior to giving a rabbit cancer to study cancer in humans.

66 67 Fitzpatrick will take to the stage at the London Pet Show for Supervet Live sponsored by Eukanuba to discuss advances in the veterinary profession, as well as recounting heart-warming success stories from the TV show. Embracing the good atmosphere, he’ll also be hosting the SuperDogs Live talent competition, celebrating doggies nationwide. The UK’s most talented, heroic and entertaining dogs will take centre stage, competing to win awards in a fun-filled, action packed show at the Zoflora Super Theatre. It’s what the vet describes as a rewarding public side to the work to does at the practice.

“Supervet Live and SuperDogs Live are about interacting with the people who want to experience that uplifting joy that a companion animal brings into your life, whether that’s a rabbit, cat or dog … I believe we have a moral responsibility as a society to look after animals.
