The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) - Region Sponsorship Opportunity

Presented with gratitude to Township of King

November 2015

Nature Conservancy of Page 9 of 32 Canada - Nature Talks

Thank you for thinking of NCC.

November 17, 2015

Dear Ms. Kathryn McLellan and Ms. Sara Olivieri:

I would like to thank you for inviting the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to submit a pro- posal to the Township of King to support our Nature Talks event, “Conservation by Air”, with the renowned filmmaker, photographer and author, Bill Lishman.

On Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Kingbridge Conference Centre in King City, Ontario, between 100 and 150 guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, book signing opportunity, and presentation by Bill Lishman, aka, Father Goose. Bill is a pioneer in ultralight aviation and the first human to lead birds in formation. He also pioneered the use of ultralight aircraft in establishing new mi- gration routes for precocial birds. His work has been documented numerous times, including in ABC's 20/20, CBC’s the Nature of Things and two hit feature films, Fly Away Home and The Winged Migration, which were inspired by his work.

In addition, guests will learn about a beautiful natural area in their own backyard. Located in King Township in the northwest of the GTA, the (HVF) is one of the largest remaining intact forests on Canada’s Oak Ridge Moraine. This 1560-acre area supports more than 110 breeding bird species and is an outstanding example of the mature sugar maple and beech upland forests that are characteristic of many parts of the Moraine. NCC has helped con- serve 630 acres of this amazing forest to date. The Nature Talks series gives NCC an opportuni- ty to encourage people to take time for nature by visiting natural areas such as HVF.

We hope that the Township of King will partner with NCC on this event, and in doing so, help ensure that King’s incredible natural areas are conserved for the future.

Once again, thank you for taking our proposal into account. I will follow up with a phone call to address any unanswered questions you may have or to arrange an opportunity to discuss our Nature Talks series in person.

Sincerely,

Linda Branderhorst Coordinator, Events—Ontario The Nature Conservancy of Canada 148 Fullarton Street, Suite 1606 London, Ontario, N6A 5P3 Office: 519-640-6822 Ext 35 [email protected]

About NCC

Who we Are

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the nation’s leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization working to protect our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain.

More than fifty years ago our founding directors embraced that mission. Distraught by the damage to the natural world they saw all around them, they launched a program to take di- rect, private action to protect natural spaces and promote conservation.

Since 1962 NCC and its partners have helped to protect more than 2.7 million acres coast to coast and 185,000 acres in Ontario. By investing in conservation we are ensuring that our natural world remains a home for wildlife, a haven for recreation and a vital resource that cleans the air we breathe and the water we drink. Through strong partnerships NCC works to safeguard our natural areas so that our children and grandchildren will have the chance to en- joy them.

NCC has made tremendous gains, but the threats to our landscapes have more than kept pace.

 The pressure on our land, water and species has never been greater  The conservation challenge has never been larger  The need for action has never been more immediate

NCC Gets Top Marks Again!

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) tops the conservation sector again in MoneySense Magazine. NCC has been awarded an overall grade of A in the environment and conservation sector. This marks the 6th straight year NCC has been ranked highest in this sector! http://www.moneysense.ca/planning/2016-charity- 100-grades/

NCC Outreach

NCC continues to leverage opportunities to engage the public and raise awareness for NCC’s mission and conservation work. We have committed to increasing our exposure through events, continued articles in Canada’s top newspapers, as well as a variety of social media channels.

NCC’s Nature Talks series is approaching its third year. The goal of this series is to promote NCC’s work and educate the public on the important of nature in our lives.

Highlights from some of our past events include:

 A sunset cruise aboard the Serendipity Princess on Kempenfelt Bay, David Phillips, Senior Cli- matologist with Environment Canada— entertained guests with stories of extreme weather moments.

 During cocktails on the St. Lawrence River in 2015, Brock Fenton, bat expert & Emeritus Professor of Biology, Western University, shared with us his studies on the life of bats.

 Most recently in nearby Grafton, Ontario, Pro- David Phillips, Senior Climatologist, Environment fessor Michael Peterman, historian and Profes- Canada. Photo by NCC. sor Emeritus of English Literature, Trent Uni- versity, shared his historical perspectives on pioneer and tallgrass trailblazer, Catharine Parr Traill.

By bringing people together we share our message about the importance of conserving na- ture, and hopefully inspire our guests to support NCC’s mission. NCC invites you to become a valued sponsor of this exciting and new event in King City.

4.5 School Outreach Update & YMCA Outreach Update

School Outreach Update

Councillor David Boyd advised Committee that invites have been extended to the Chairs of the York Region and Catholic School Boards (Peter Adams and Elizabeth Crowe) to attend the January 20th Sustainability Advisory Committee meeting.

The Committee discussed the purpose of the meeting and it was determined that the purpose would be to discuss how to get the School Boards to integrate sustainability into the curriculum and align it with the programs that currently exist. The Committee would like to advise the School Board Chairs of what the Committee does and how the Committee can work with them.

Susan Plamondon suggested that the Committee consider reaching out to the Supervisory Officers for the School Boards as they may be in a better position.

Action: Councillor Boyd will continue making progress on this by building momentum he has with the catholic school.

YMCA Outreach Update

John Bartella and Rick Sikorski visited with Brandon McClounie at YMCA Cedar Glen on November 11th, 2015. They advised Committee that they had a great tour of the entire

Minutes of the Sustainability Page 27 of 32 Advisory Committee Sustainability Advisory Committee Meeting Agenda Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

facility which is very large and impressive and accommodates about 40,000 kids per year. The purpose of the meeting was to explore ways to work with the camp. Three topics were discussed and are summarized below:

1. Of the 40,000 people that visit, a majority are from the city and there is no evidence of the community in which they are visiting. It was discussed that integrating some program or signage about King Township, the history, its agricultural centre, etc. to bring awareness to the kids about where they are would be beneficial.

2. Very few people in King Township have any sense of the Cedar Glen facility. Raising the profile of the facility through articles, having open houses, etc. was discussed. There is even an opportunity to do an Experience King video about YMCA Cedar Glen and other camps in King.

3. Farming camps were discussed as Cedar Glen would like to grow and expand the size of the farm. With all the community gardens that are being established in King there is an opportunity to build knowledge and awareness. There is also the opportunity for the Schomberg Farm Tour to include Cedar Glen.

A motion was made by Susan Beharriell and seconded by Tashko Sarakinov that the Committee discuss working with Township staff to develop an Experience King video focusing on camps in King and look for opportunities to finance this in 2016. The motion carried with all in favour.

The Committee discussed holding a future meeting at Cold Creek Conservation Area and also suggested that the venues for future meetings be changed to different facilities around the Township.

Action: Sara Olivieri to reach out to the Clear Impact, who developed the Experience King videos, to explore the idea of doing an Experience King video focusing on camps in King.

4.6 Sustainable King Grant Application – Christ Church Kettleby

The Committee reviewed the application and commented that it was the most impressive and detailed application they have received to date. The Committee agreed that the project definitely merits a grant from the Committee.

A motion was by Councillor Debbie Schaefer and seconded by Susan Beharriell that $3000.00 be granted to Christ Church Kettleby to assist with the creation and publishing of CHRONICLES of a Country Village Church, subject to the following: that Sustainable King be cited in the book as a supporter; and that four copies of the book be provided to the King Township’s Libraries (King City, Nobleton, Schomberg & Ansnorveldt). The motion carried with all in favour.

Minutes of the Sustainability Page 28 of 32 Advisory Committee Sustainability Advisory Committee Meeting Agenda Tuesday, November 24th, 2015 4.7 Waste Reduction Initiative/Idea

Tashko Sarakinov shared with Committee an idea in regards to waste reduction when grocery shopping. People often put things like bananas, lemons, limes and onions in the plastic grocery bags when it is not necessary to do so. It was suggested that reusable bags be made available for people to carry their produce from the cart to the grocery checkout bag.

The Committee discussed that the reusable bags may not work due to health standards/ issues but an awareness campaign would be a good start. It was suggested that the Committee reach out to John at No Frills in Nobleton to start a signage campaign.

Action: Taskho will work on putting together signage.
