This past January saw the launch of our Info Night initiative, the purpose of which is to allow students the opportunity to get as much information possible on all topics that relate to their life in Australia, from Internships, Tax, Travel, to Accommodation and Healthcare, among other subjects.

Two of our guest speakers in Sydney and Melbourne came from Australian Internships. Australian Internships is an in- ternship placement company, this year celebrating 20 years of operations. We caught up with Australian Internships after the Info Night and had the chance to ask them a few more ques- tions about what potential interns can expect from an internship program and the real outcomes of undergoing one.

GC - What is taken into account, by Australian Internships, when matching a candidate with the perfect company?

Australian Internships works with tailored internship programs that perfectly match candidates and host organisation’s needs. It is important to take into consideration each candidate’s academic background, performance during studies, work experience if they have any, and their goals for the internship. On the other hand, we also need to take into consideration the companies’ demand, industries and type of positions available and the organisation’s capability in offering training to candidates.

GC - How does Australian Internships monitor the student journey/progress through the internship?

Once candidates apply for our internship programs they are allocated one of our Internship Program Supervisors (IPS). The IPS offer comprehensive support to students, from completing strong Resumes and Cover Letters to preparing for interviews and dealing with challenges in the workplace. The IPS are in contact with the interns on a regular basis to gather feedback and check how the training is going. Interns are required to complete a weekly learning plan as well as feedback forms so that we can evaluate their progress and make necessary amendments if necessary. This feedback is also gathered from the Host Organisations, since we wish to ensure it is a win-win situation for both sides – companies and interns.

GC - What can students do to increase their chances of being placed in an internship position that they want?

In order to help us better match your needs to a suitable Host Organisation it is important to be aware of the possibilities and restrictions available within your field. Realistic expectations and clear communication with the Australian Internships’ team will help us ensure we have all the necessary information to make the best possible match available for you.

Targa- The Tasmania Ultimate Tarmac Rally -

arga Tasmania is a world class international motorsport event about to enter its 27th Event. This is a tarmac rally that travels over 2000kms with almost 40 competitive stages on closed roads for the true motoring enthusiast, catering for up to 300 selected cars approved by invitation.

TTarga Tasmania’s heritage comes from a passionate history dating back to 1906 in Sicily, where the inaugural “Targa Florio” was unveiled. Targa Florio took its name from organiser Vincenzo Florio. Each winner was presented with a plate bearing the Florio family crest. The Italian word for plate is “Targa”, hence the name, “Targa”. While Targa Florio is no longer a competitive race, every year a pilgrimage still takes place driving the Sicilian Course. The competition also draws concepts directly from the best features of the Mille Miglia, the Coupe des Alpes and the Tour de Corse to create the worlds largest Tarmac Rally with a cross section of marvellously restored classic vehicles as well as the latest in grand touring and sports vehicles.

While all competitors who cross the finish line receive a finishers medallion, those who qualify in completing each stage under a pre-set time will also receive a Targa Plate. Competing in Targa is your opportunity to share in this unique history in the making, and experience some of the most exciting and challenging tarmac roads in the world the way your car was designed to be driven.

This is the ultimate experience - this is the Ultimate Tarmac Rally. For more details on Targa & Event Categories available head to: www.targa.com.au

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour

anda Opera on Sydney Harbour is now recognised as one of the world’s greatest outdoor opera Hspectaculars alongside events such as Aida at Luxor and Turandot in the Forbidden City. Described as one of the top four opera open-air events in the world by Signature Luxury Travel and Style magazine, the annual event is a highlight of the Australian cultural calendar, attracting more than 250,000 attendees from around Australia and across the globe over the past six years.

Opera Australia expects the 2018 season will continue that successful run, with Puccini’s La Bohème known as one of the world’s all-time favourite operas, and the inspiration behind Moulin Rouge and the musical Rent.

This new production of La Bohème is set in a wintery 1960s Parisian landscape, featuring beautiful cobblestone laneways, glowing street lamps and classically bohemian costumes, along with fabulous special effects including snow falling on Sydney Harbour and fireworks illuminating the night sky completing the stunning picture.

SPRUIKWIRE - MAGAZINE 9

Director Andy Morton has been charged with bringing this vision to life. Mr Morton has worked on the past five Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour productions and is delighted to be taking the reins of a new show for the first time. Celebrated set and costume designer Dan Potra is making a welcome return to the outdoor stage after working his magic on Turandot in 2016.

Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini is thrilled ‘his brain-child’ has gone on to become such an international success. “Watching this event evolve over the past six years has certainly been an exciting time. To see all the elements come together so spectacularly each year and to see how much joy it brings to the audiences, who have really taken it to their hearts, it’s been incredibly satisfying,” Mr Terracini said. “It’s no wonder the event has become such a hit with visitors. With its harbour-side setting, spectacular views of the famous Sydney skyline, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, along with a monumental set, stunning costumes, world-class performers and a nightly burst of fireworks, it’s an unforgettable experience.”

The custom-built site opens two and a half hours before the show starts, giving guests a fabulous opportunity to take in the spectacular views overlooking Sydney Harbour. Dinner and show packages are available with variable components that include a three-course dinner, interval drinks, program and performance.

SPRUIKWIRE - MAGAZINE 13 Intership at Peterpans At the beginning of my internship I didn’t know what to expect. I was a bit nervous to be honest, but once it started I got way more confident.

I think I have gotten much better at my people skills, since I have to talk to people. The part I love the most is that I get to know people - you ask them things about their life, experiences in order to see what trip is better for them.

I have gotten to learn a lot about Australia and the many cool places and things It has to offer. As in anything in life there are pros and cons but I think the pros outweigh the cons by a lot.

I love the fact that the team is very international, and you get to work with people from different parts of the world. While you work you get to see awesome places you can visit later on. You can pick the music as long as it’s within reason (not death metal, etc…) Overall, I have enjoyed my internship a lot and, most important of all, I have learnt a lot.

The tour guide knows the stories, the history, the animals and the nature around the Red Centre and that makes the trip truly amazing! The first two days you’ll visit Uluru and Kata Tjuta and at night you’ll sleep in swags under the stunning starry skies.

It has to be early, because in the dessert it gets hot very quickly! On the fourth day you’ll drive through the dessert to Cooper Pedy, an old mining tow which looks and feels like a ghost town, because 80% of the inhabitants live in caves - which is where you’ll sleep as well!

After Cooper Pedy, the trip goes through the Flinders Rangers, where you spend the night. This day is full of nice stops and you’ll have enough time to have some fun on the highway. You’ll sleep in the beautiful green nature of Flinders Rangers and the next day you’ll go for a beautiful walk. After this you’ll have a goodbye lunch with your group, who are your friends now, and drive on to your final destination: Adelaide.

Arriving in Woolgoolga near Coffs Harbour (easily accessible by bus from Sydney) I was met by the Spot X shuttle bus that whisked me off to the surf camp. Arriving late meant that the reception was closed, however, the surf instructor showed me to my container - yes I slept in a container! Inside it was like being in a 6-bed dorm.

After breakfast (all food is included) we had our first surf lesson and we geared up with wetsuits and sunscreen, which were provided for us. Following this we had a comprehensive introduction to the ocean, surfing and all the safety that comes with the sport. Down to the beach we went to practice our ‘POP up’ on the sand before jumping in the water to give it a go for real.

The instructors were amazing giving out loads of advice and helping each person to stand up. During the evenings there are also activities, such as movie night, party night and game night.

We started the next day with another surf lesson, followed by some ocean rafting in the afternoon. This was great fun rafting on huge waves! The surf camp is so inclusive with so many fun activities and yummy food - I would recommend it to everyone!

Get to know Santiago Villamil:

What is your favourite thing about Melbourne? Melbourne has a lot of things that I like, but my favourite is walking along the Yarra River. It has amazing views and restaurants.

What are some of your favourite hobbies and things to do in Melbourne? In winter, I really enjoy snowboarding and during summer, I enjoy surfing.

In my home country, Colombia, we do not experience multiples seasons. As a result the sports I mentioned above are not practiced in my country.

What is the biggest cultural difference you have noticed between your home country and Melbourne? The biggest cultural difference is that in Melbourne, you can find people from all over the world along, with their traditions and cuisines. Whereas in Colombia, most of the travellers are just from America. In Melbourne, I’m interacting with someone from a different part of the world everyday.
