Hello, my name is Wade Szakacs. Welcome to the Commander’s Corner. We are Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4850, Jasper, Alabama. Our goal is to speed the rehabilitation of our nation’s disabled and needy veterans and assist their widows, orphans and dependents. We promote Americanism by providing service to our local community and teaching others about patriotism. This month we would like to recognize our Iraq veterans and welcome them home. Our first casualty from Walker County was Richard Gilmore, III. The Post will be honoring him at our POW/MIA Ceremony on September 18th, at 5:30 p.m. at the VFW Post, 3401 Veterans Drive, Jasper Al 35501. If you are a Gold Star family or a Blue Star family, we invite you to join us so we can honor you and your loved one’s service to our country. Weather permitting, the POW/MIA ceremony will be held outside. Come hungry, dinner served, boston butt with buns and sides. We would like to take a moment to reflect on one of the key elements of what the VFW stands for and what we do. Community and county-wide, we do a lot of community service. If you don’t know about it it’s because we don’t brag about it. On a department/state level we give financially to Disaster Relief. We have designated drop-off points at the top, middle and lower part of the state where we combine our efforts with others to assist the Disaster Relief efforts. We fill vehicles full of supplies and send them to the state or specific area that currently needs them. On a national level, we introduce and push for legislation (as none of your senators or congressman wake up and say, “I think I’ll sign a bill into legislation to help a veteran today.”). We fight hard to make sure our troops have as much comfort and safety as is possible on the battlefield or duty assignments. The Forever GI Bill, VA Accountability Act and Blue Water Bill are just some of the legislation we have fought for for our veterans. Furthermore, we assist veterans as they transition from military to civilian life by providing guidance and the means for filing claims for service connected issues. Additionally, there are $30,000 and $5,000 scholarships available such as “Patriot’s Pen” and “Voice of Democracy”. Please inquire at the VFW Post for more information or how to apply. In closing, please be aware that our Canteen Hours are still limited and we are required to close by 11 p.m. The number of participants at Bingo on Mondays and Thursdays is also limited due to social distancing guidelines. Please take care of yourselves and each other and stay safe. God Bless!

The Daily Mountain Eagle Football Contest for 2020 is possible through the sponsorship of the area businesses appearing on this page. The contest will appear each Tuesday throughout the season. 2. In each of the ads of the sponsoring firms, contestants will find a football game to be played the following weekend. All the contestant has to do is circle the winning team on this page. All submissions must be made on an original contest form from a purchased newspaper. 3. The score of the two games appearing at the middle of the page are the only scores that the contestant has to predict. These scores will serve as the tiebreaker. Contestants selecting correct winners of tiebreakers will be considered first in breaking tie. 4. Winners will be determined by the number of correct answers they predict. In the event of a tie, the earliest entry received by the Daily Mountain Eagle will be declared the winner. 5. All entries for the week must be in the Daily Mountain Eagle business office no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday pre- ceding the games. Winners will be announced the following week. 6. Contest is open to everyone over the age of 16 except employees of the Daily Mountain Eagle and their immedi- ate families. 7. The decision of the judges will be considered final. No entries will be returned. 8. Contestants may only win 1 (one) prize per week, per family. 9. Limit 5 entries per contestant each week.
