I s Belvoir Hounds , whose chronicles it my aim to collect and present to the reader 111 as
concise a form as possible , have been handed 1 7 5 0 down in an uninterrupted descent from the year , n and probably from a much earlier period , to the prese t
of time . They have always been in the possession the n Rutland family , and the greatest care and attentio
on . has , for at least a century, been bestowed them
m all Bred fro the best packs in the kingdom , their lineal descent never having been broken or interrupted by sales , or other untoward causes having, moreover, 7 0 for years , been under the control of Huntsmen
da acknowledged to have been the best of their y, can it be doubted that the Belvoir hounds possess as much
B ME MOIRS or THE BELVOIR HOUND S . excellen ce and intrinsic value as any pack can hope to attain to . This their extraordinary family likeness ,
r thei stamina in chase , their undaunted courage ,
u of and the thoro ghbred sheen their coats , bear M m ample testimony to . oreover , fro the large extent of country they are enabled to hunt over through the assistance and good will of both landed proprietors
m of and farmers , as also fro the extensive lands the
of House Belvoir , they have always had the great
of c advantage being kept up to oncert pitch , as well in t d the cub hunting as in he regular season . The woo lands also are s o extended and varied as to afford
r of d eve y facility for the education the young houn s , and for ensuring that condition and stamina for which the hounds have been ever remarkable . What can we s ay of the m en who have successively trained and

In these pages I have been able to compile a most correct account o f every good run with the Belvoir 1 7 9 9 1 8 6 t hounds from to 6 ; they are strictly correc , because each one was written directly after the event by practical sportsmen connected with the hounds . The runs selected are those considerably above the average each season omitting a vast many which have at the time been highly inte resting and successful .
S fe w of ome of the runs , and not a , are the class ably “ described by Lord Lonsdale as Historical Runs . From 1 7 9 9 each run is taken from the daily written w account (after ards printed) of the Belvoir book . up
1 8 2 8 n u to , when the pri ted books were nfortunately discontinued ; the remainder is taken from Lord ’ Forester s and my own j ournals up to the present year . It is interesting in reviewing the sp ort day by day of

6 7 how m these seasons , in number , to observe uch the same lines were chosen by foxes ; in fact the runs of the early part of the century (supposed to have been the golden age of foxhunting) and the usual run of 0 sport was about the same as during the last 2 ye ars .
f and It is true the face o the country is much altered , by draining and good farming made more easy to ride
I m f o f over, still a o opinion the sport the present
c day is as good as formerly . By referen e to the diaries
of 1 8 0 0 I quote from , some the seasons between and 1 8 8 0 were dry and bad scenting, the result being bad A sport, no straight points , and ringing foxes . gain ,
of wet n as late years , came seaso s , then straight runs
or and tired horses were the order of the day . N do I imagine that the foxhound of the present day is in
an of 1 82 0 y way changed from the hound , any more
than the well -bred hunter of to - day is a whit better or w orse than the same bred horse of that period .
as I This narrative , before said , embraces the f 7 o 6 1 7 9 9 1 86 6 . v period years , from to The Bel oir

’
S . 2 1 8 5 0 . A day s cub hunting at Irnham Park , ept , n After writi g to your Lordship last week , I found that the Cottesmore had commenced in earnest in o ur
at neutral coverts , and had been the Castle Bytham
o f D kennel . They found a great show foxes in unsby
Wood , but were beat . I therefore thought I would take the earliest opportunity o f presenting my young
a team to the Irnh m Park Wood foxes , so sent George Shepherd over to Irnham o n S aturday to say we should
M o ut be there on onday . I found afterwards that the n Cottesmore were coming there too , seemi gly disposed w to support a measure I brought for ard last year , that o f u o ro sing the neutral Wo d foxes , but which they last year opposed to the uttermost, and were angry with me for doing so , because I paid my addresses to them first . M Knowing they were coming on onday , I thought I
o f would avoid, if possible , a breach etiquette , so I ordered our whip to bring our hounds to Westby by half past seven ; and I let the C ottesmore have the
of honor going in first . I got there at daybreak to see
on what was going . They drew Irnham Park , where
m o ne they found , gave the ring round the wood and stopped them , thinking it was an old fox . They then
