NEW MEXICO 24

UNLV 22

University Stadium • Albuquerque, N.M. • Sept. 5, 2005 • Att. 37,533 FURIOUS COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT

UNLV 0 6 3 13 -- 22 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- It was the only turnover of the game but it was costly, as Shane Steichen’s interception with 1:26 left UNM 17 0 0 7 -- 24 ended a furious Rebel rally in a 24-22 Labor Day loss to New Mexico in new UNLV head coach Mike Sanford’s debut. The pick came right after the Rebels had recovered an onside kick, as Lobo DB Gabriel Fulbright dove in front of a pass intended for FIRST QUARTER Rebel TE Greg Estandia to preserve the UNM win that came in front of a national ESPN2 audience and 37,533 fans at UNM - Byrd 37-yd FG 9:43 University Stadium. Just moments earlier Steichen had marched the Rebels down the field in the waning moments of the UNM - Baskett 47-yd pass from McKamey game, finishing the drive with a seven-yard TD pass to Donell Wheaton in the back of the end zone. The score pulled UNLV (Byrd kick) 7:16 to within 24-22 but the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed as Erick Jackson was stopped just inches short after UNM- Moore 10-yd pass from McKamey catching a shovel pass from Steichen. The fact that the Rebels were in position to steal a win from the Lobos was an (Byrd kick) 2:47 accomplishment in itself, considering the dreadful start to the game. UNM blitzed the Rebels for 17 unanswered points in the SECOND QUARTER opening quarter, getting a field goal and two Kole KcKamey TD passes to jump out to the early lead. While the Lobo offense UNLV - E. Jackson 16-yd pass from Steichen marched down the field with relative ease, the Rebels’ new shotgun spread offense sputtered, going three-and-out in their (Aguayo missed PAT) 5:45 first two drives and gaining just 24 yards in the first stanza compared to 171 by UNM. But once they got the jitters out of their THIRD QUARTER system, both the Rebel offense and defense got going and slowly chipped away at the UNM margin. Jackson finally got the UNLV- Aguayo 31-yd FG 6:38 Rebels on the board in the second quarter, catching a 16-yard scoring strike from Steichen that made the score 17-6. FOURTH QUARTER Sophomore kicker Sergio Aguayo missed the extra-point attempt, the first miss of his UNLV career, and the mistake would UNM- Moore 1-yd run come back to haunt the Rebels late in the game. UNLV struck first in the second half with a 31-yard FG by Aguayo, setting up (Byrd kick) 13:24 a wild fourth quarter. DonTrell Moore, who was kept under control by the Rebel defense, put UNM up 24-9 with a one-yard UNLV - E. Jackson 3-yd run TD run less than two minutes into the final quarter. UNLV answered right away with a TD run of its own as Jackson darted in (Aguayo kick) 10:48 from three yards out to cut the lead to 24-16. The UNLV defense then forced the Lobos to punt, but UNM punter Tyler Gaus UNLV - Wheaton 7-yd pass from Steichen pinned the Rebels on their own five-yard line with 5:39 left in the game. Steichen was cool despite being backed up deep in (Failed two-point conversion) 1:31 his own territory and started the drive with a 39-yard hook-up with Wheaton. Steichen added a 27-yard scramble on third- and-eight and a 20-yard pass to Tremayne Kirkland before hitting Wheaton in the end zone on fourth down. Because of UNLV UNM Aguayo’s missed PAT, the Rebels were forced to try for two to tie the game but Jackson was stopped by the UNM defense First Downs 14 19 right before the goal line. IDAHO 31

Sam Boyd Stadium • Las Vegas, Nev. • Sept. 10, 2005 • Att. 21,870 AGUAYO BOOTS GAME WINNER FOR REBELS LAS VEGAS - Sergio Aguayo’s 41-yard field goal into the wind split the uprights as time expired, propelling UNLV to a hard- fought 34-31 victory over Idaho before 21,870 jubilant fans at the 2005 home opener at Sam Boyd Stadium. The win snapped a six-game Rebel losing streak and in the process gave new head coach Mike Sanford his first career win. Aguayo’s FG, which IDAHO 0 14 7 10 - - 31 was the first game-winning kick for UNLV since 1992, capped a wild night had four lead changes and two ties, the final one UNLV 7 10 7 10 - - 34 coming when Erick Jackson scampered in from eight yards out to knot the game at 31 with less than eight minutes remaining. FIRST QUARTER Idaho, led by QB Steven Wichman, moved the ball down field through the air to the UNLV four-yard line behind two big UNLV - Steichen 51-yd run completions of 39 and 46 yards. Wichman, who finished the game with 390 yards through the air and three TDs, was sacked by (Aguayo kick) 14:10 Rebel DE Leon Moore on third-and-goal from the four, setting up a Vandal FG attempt. It was Moore’s third sack of the game UNLV - Aguayo 26-yd FG 11:28 SECOND QUARTER and one of the biggest defensive plays of the night. Mike Barrow, who had missed a 33-yard attempt in the first quarter, pushed UI- Sherman 60-yd run the ensuing kick wide left, keeping the score tied at 31. With the ball at the 20, UNLV began a methodical drive down the field and (Barrow kick) 10:04 into Aguayo’s range. The big play of the drive came on a fourth-and-eight at the Idaho 40-yard line with 2:01. Sanford called a UI - Smith 51-yd pass from Wichman time out and after thinking it over, decided to roll the dice and go for it on fourth. The gamble paid off as Rebel QB Shane (Barrow kick) 5:20 UNLV- Wheaton 33-yd pass from Steichen Steichen completed a nine-yard pass to Casey Flair to keep the drive going. UNLV ran three more plays before calling on (Aguayo kick) :43 Aguayo to win it. Just as the game ended with Rebel fireworks, Steichen had started the night with a bang, streaking down the THIRD QUARTER right side line for a 51-yard TD run less than a minute into the game for a 7-0 UNLV lead. The run started a big night for Steichen UNLV- Estandia 3-yd pass from Steichen as he became the first Rebel signal caller to pass for more than 200 yards (250) and rush for more than 100 (104) in a single (Aguayo kick) 7:15 UI- Octave 20-yd pass from Wichman game. Aguayo added a 26-yard FG in the second quarter for a 10-0 Rebel lead before Idaho reeled off 14-consecutive points in (Barrow kick) 4:04 the second quarter on an Antwaun Sherman 60-yard TD run and a 51-yard scoring strike from Wichman to Daniel Smith, FOURTH QUARTER making the score 14-10 i n Idaho’s favor. After the Vandals’ scoring surge the Rebels answered with 14 points of their own with UI- Barrow 41-yd FG 14:32 both scores coming from the arm of Steichen as he hooked up with Donell Wheaton from 33 yards out in the second quarter and UI- Harrison 15-yd pass from Wichman (Barrow kick) 9:52 then found Greg Estandia for a three-yard TD in the third quarter. Just as it had done earlier in the game, UI went on another UNLV - E. Jackson 8-yd run scoring streak, this one a 17-point run that gave the Vandals the lead back at 31-24. But in a game filled with runs, the Rebels’ (Aguayo kick) 7:58 final 10 points of the game proved to be the difference. UNLV - Aguayo 41-yd FG 0:00

UNLV 14

Mackay Stadium • Reno, NV • Sept. 17, 2005 • Att: 23,457 UNLV BLUE AS CANNON GOES BACK NORTH

UNLV 7007--14 RENO – Turnovers and missed opportunities plagued UNLV (1-2) in a 22-14 loss to Nevada, Reno, breaking the UNR 9 0 3 10 -- 22 Rebels’ five-game winning streak in the hotly contested series and sending the Fremont Cannon back North. In a sloppy game played before 23,457 fans at Mackay Stadium and an ESPNU audience, Rebel QB Shane Steichen FIRST QUARTER UNR - Hubbard 1-yd run fumbled twice, threw an interception and struggled passing the ball as he had just one passing yard at halftime (Jaekle kick) 9:58 and finished the game with 58. The Wolf Pack scored first, taking the opening kickoff 80 yards in 13 plays for the UNR- Jaekle 25-yd FG 2:12 game’s first touchdown on a one-yard run by Robert Hubbard. Brett Jaekle missed the PAT and UNR had a 6-0 UNLV - Steichen 70-yd run lead. UNLV was forced to punt on its first possession of the game and Nevada, Reno added another score, this (Aguayo kick) 2:01 time a 25-yard FG from Jaekle, pushing the lead to 9-0 with 3:12 left in the opening quarter. Three plays later the THIRD QUARTER Rebels cut into the lead as Steichen faked an option hand off that drew the Wolf Pack defenders into the middle UNR - Jaekle 26-yd FG 2:35 of the field which allowed him to go around the left side of the line and sprint 70 yards for the TD. Steichen’s jaunt FOURTH QUARTER was the longest scoring play by a UNLV QB and it was the second-longest rush ever by a Rebel signal caller since UNR - Jaekle 22-yd FG 8:09 Jason Thomas’ 72-yard run against BYU in 2000. The score would stay at 9-7 throughout the rest of the half, but UNR - Hubbard 1-yd run the Rebels blew a golden opportunity to take the lead. With a first-and-goal on the UNR six-yard line, UNLV self- (Jaekle kick) 2:33 destructed, as two penalties wiped away TDs and another took away a completion that would have moved the ball UNLV - Estandia 16-yd pass from Steichen (Aguayo kick), 1:09 to the one-foot line. On third-and-goal from the 27 after the third infraction, Steichen was sacked for a loss of 15 yards, taking the Rebels out of FG range and forcing them to punt. After a scoreless third quarter UNR added UNLV UNR another Jaekle three pointer, this one from 22 yards for a 15-7 lead in the middle of the fourth quarter. UNLV was First Downs 12 24 driving and had the ball at midfield when Steichen tried to go over the middle and was intercepted by Roderick Rushing-Yards 34-205 49-131 Stallings, who returned the pick 32 yards to the UNLV 34. Six plays later Hubbard scored again, his second one- Passing Yards 58 265 yard run of the game, giving UNR a 22-7 lead. The Rebels got a 16-yard TD pass from Steichen to TE Greg Passes (A-C-I) 26-7-1 33-21-0 Estandia with 1:09 left in the game, but the ensuing UNLV onside kick was recovered by UNR, allowing it to run Total Offense 263 396 out the game. UNLV 24

Romney Stadium • Logan, UT • Sept. 24, 2005 • Att: 12,408

UNLV 10 0 14 0 - - 24 TURNOVERS DERAIL REBEL OFFENSE USU 7987--31 LOGAN, Utah – UNLV (1-3) dropped its third-straight road game, a 31-24 defeat against Utah State (1-1) that was almost identical to 2004’s meeting between the two teams in Las Vegas, as the Rebels dominated the statistics but fell short on the FIRST QUARTER UNLV- Jackson 19-yd run scoreboard. UNLV out gained the Aggies by more than 100 yards, recorded more first downs and limited USU to just 61 yards (Aguayo kick) 14:03 of rushing. But untimely turnovers did in the Rebels on a chilly fall night at Romney Stadium. Early on it appeared that things USU - Pennyman 92-yd kickoff return were going to go UNLV’s way, as quarterback Shane Steichen threw an interception on the first play of the game that was (Jakubiak kick) 13:50 nullified due to a roughing-the-passer penalty. Three plays later the Rebels were in the end zone, scoring the first points of the UNLV - Aguayo 44-yd FG 8:48 game on a 19-yard burst by Erick Jackson for a 7-0 lead 57 seconds in. It didn’t take long for USU to answer as Tony SECOND QUARTER Pennyman took the ensuing kickoff through the middle of the field 92 yards to tie the game. Sergio Aguayo gave the Rebels USU - Jakubiak 25-yd FG 3:23 the lead back, kicking a career-long 44-yarder for a 10-7 advantage midway through the opening quarter. In the second USU - Pennyman 12-yd pass from Jackson quarter the Aggies knotted the score at 10 on a Jarrod Jakubiak 25-yard FG and then took the lead with less than two minutes (PAT blocked), 1:15 THIRD QUARTER remaining in the half as Leon Jackson connected on a 12-yard TD pass. UNLV DE Isaac Watts blocked the PAT, to make the UNLV - Wheaton 34-yd pass from Steichen score 16-10. UNLV had a chance to score before the half ended and had moved the ball down to the 19-yard line of USU with (Aguayo kick) 8:31 eight seconds left. Instead of attempting a field goal, UNLV head coach Mike Sanford decided to try for a TD once more and UNLV - Kirkland 13-yd pass from Steichen Steichen was intercepted in the end zone by Jarrett Bush to end the half. UNLV opened the second half strong, scoring 14 (Aguayo kick) 4:13 unanswered points to vault ahead 24-16 behind the arm of Steichen. Playing with a broken finger on his left hand since the USU - Robinson 19-yd run first quarter, Steichen threw a 34-yard scoring strike to Donnell Wheaton and then found Tremayne Kirkland for a 13-yard (Jackson rush) :52 score. Steichen finished the game with career highs of 265 yards and 25 completions. But that would be the end of the Rebel FOURTH QUARTER offense on the night, as they wouldn’t score again the rest of the game. USU tied the game at 24 late in the third quarter on a USU- Robinson 15-yd pass from Jackson (Jakubiak kick) 9:31 19-yard run by Kevin Robinson and a two-point conversion run by Jackson on a QB keeper. The lead would return to the Aggies in the fourth with Robinson again reaching the end zone, this time on a 15-yard pass from Jackson that pushed the UNLV USU scored to 31-24. The Rebels had a chance to tie, getting the ball back at the USU 48-yard line with 30 seconds left in the game. On a sunny day at War Memorial Stadium there were FIRST QUARTER few bright spots for the Rebels as the Cowboys score a pair of first-quarter touchdowns and never looked back. UW - Betschart 31-yd pass from Bramlet (Yaussi kick) 9:55 Making his first career I-A start for UNLV was junior signal caller Jarrod Jackson, who was thrust into the starting UW - Bouknight 29-yd pass from Bramlet lineup due to Shane Steichen having surgery on a broken finger on his left hand. Jackson threw for 239 yards and two (Yaussi kick) 4:32 touchdowns, but the Rebels could not sustain any drives in the opening three quarters as turnovers and penalties SECOND QUARTER hindered UNLV all afternoon. UW got on the board first on a 31-yard TD pass from Corey Bramlet to tight end Wade UNLV - Aguayo 29-yd FG 11:28 Betschart for an early 7-0 Cowboy lead. The scoring strike was a sign of things to come from Bramlet, who finished the UW - Martin 10-yd interception return (Yaussi kick) 7:59 game with a career-high 315 yards passing with three TD tosses. Five minutes later, after a UNLV punt, Bramlet tossed UW - Seldon 2-yd run his second TD pass of the quarter, a 29-yard strike to Jovon Bouknight that pushed the lead to 14 points. UNLV scored (Yaussi kick) 4:05 its first points of the game early in the second quarter on a 29-yard FG by Sergio Aguayo that made the score 14-3. THIRD QUARTER UNLV’s defense then forced the Cowboys to punt but UW punter Scott Parker lofted a 35-yard punt that pinned the UW - Bouknight 34-yd pass from Bramlet Rebels at the seven-yard line. With their backs in the end zone, Jackson threw a quick out toward Donell Wheaton to (Yaussi kick) 10:49 FOURTH QUARTER get a little breathing room. Cowboy Derrick Martin read the play and broke on the ball, picking it off and UW - Seldon 3-yd run strolling into the end zone for a 10-yard TD that pushed the lead to 21-7. SAN DIEGO

Sam Boyd Stadium • Las Vegas, Nev. • Oct. 8, 2005 • Att. 18,372 AGUAYOSTATE AUTOMATIC AT THE END 10 LAS VEGAS — For the second-straight home game, UNLV (2-4, 1-2) was lifted to a victory by the left leg of Sergio Aguayo, who booted a 52-yard FG with nine seconds left to propel the Rebels past visiting San Diego State 13-10. On a blustery day that had wind gusts of over 25 MPH, 18,372 fans and an ESPN+ Regional television audience watched as Aguayo, who had connected on a 52-yard FG earlier in the fourth quarter, split the uprights to end the Rebels’ three-game losing streak and give head coach Mike SDSU 0 7 3 0 - - 10 Sanford his first MWC coaching victory. In the Rebels’ home opener Aguayo drilled a 41-yard FG as time expired to lift UNLV to a UNLV 0 7 0 6 - - 13 34-31 win. Unlike that game, this tilt against SDSU was a defensive affair as the Rebels turned in one of their most dominating performances on that side of the ball in recent history. UNLV limited the Aztecs to just 34 yards rushing, 106 yards passing for a SECOND QUARTER paltry 140 yards of total offense. SDSU also failed to convert a single third-down attempt, going 0-15 in the game. In fact, if it was SDSU -Martin 86-yd interception return not for Rebel mistakes, SDSU may not have scored, as the Aztecs got their 10 points off of UNLV turnovers. After a scoreless (Palmer kick) 5:17 UNLV - Riley 5-yd run opening period, the Aztecs got on the board first as LB Joe Martin stepped in front of a pass from UNLV QB Jarrod Jackson and (Aguayo kick) 2:26 returned it 86 yards for a TD. UNLV answered on its next drive, capatalizing on a poor kickoff by the Aztecs that went just 18 yards THIRD QUARTER to the UNLV 47. Eight plays later JaJa Riley rumbled in from five yards out for his first collegiate TD, knotting the game at 7-7 SDSU - Palmer 22-yd FG 0:58 heading into halftime. San Diego State broke the tie late in the third quarter, again benefitting from a Rebel turnover. Jarrod FOURTH QUARTER Jackson threw a bad pitch on an option play and SDSU LB Reggie Grigsby returned it 39 yards to the UNLV four-yard line. The UNLV - Aguayo 52-yd FG 5:05 Rebel defense stiffened, stopping two consecutive rushing plays and then forcing an incompletion to keep the Aztecs out of the UNLV - Aguayo 52-yd FG 0:09 end zone and limiting them to a FG, making the score 10-7. The fourth started with both teams combining for three consecutive three-and-outs and then another SDSU punt after a five-play drive that gave the Rebels the ball at the UNLV 45-yard line with the SDSU UNLV wind at their back. UNLV took advantage of the great field position, and not needing many yards to get into Aguayo’s range, moved First Downs 10 13 the ball to SDSU’s 35-yard line. Aguayo booted his first FG of the game, his first-ever make from over 50 yards to tie the game at Rushing-Yards 35-34 49-153 10 with 5:05 left. UNLV’s defense then forced another three-and-out, with Beau Bell sacking SDSU QB Kevin O’Connell for a five- Passing Yards 106 88 yard loss on third down. The sack brought Bell’s total to 3.5 in the game and the sophomore LB also recorded a career-high 14 Passes (A-C-I) 28-14-3 18-8-2 tackles on the day. After another short SDSU punt into the wind, the Rebels took over and handed the ball off six consecutive times Total Offense 140 241 to Erick Jackson, who finished the game with career highs of 29 carries for 109 yards. Jackson’s final carry brought the ball back Punt returns-Yards 3-29 1- -1 to the SDSU 35, setting up Aguayo to be the hero once again. UNLV ERRORS = FALCON ROUT

UNLV 0700--7 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Looking to break a seven-game road losing streak, a banged up UNLV (2-5/1-3) AIR FORCE 0 21 7 14 -- 42 instead turned in enough mistakes to allow Air Force (3-4/2-3) to blow out the Rebels 42-7 on a beautiful morning at Falcon Stadium. Up early for a Las Vegas kickoff time of 9 a.m., UNLV took its opening drive right into AFA territory SECOND QUARTER but a direct snap to Tremayne Kirkland sailed over the receiver’s head for a drive-killing 19-yard loss. After a scoreless AF - Carney 11-yd run first quarter a Falcon drive was stopped at the UNLV 22-yard line. However, a roughing-the-passer penalty bailed out (Eberle kick) 14:43 AF- Carney 8-yd run Air Force, which capitalized quickly with QB Shaun Carney’s first of four rushing touchdowns. Still stunned, the (Eberle kick) 13:56 Rebels then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and saw Carney take it in again from eight yards out to suddenly make it 14- UNLV - Flair 58-yd pass from Kirkland 0. The visitors answered, however, with a nifty trick play that saw Kirkland take a pitch from QB Jarrod Jackson and (Aguayo kick) 12:38 hit Casey Flair down field for a 58-yard score. AFA then rolled 80 yards into the end zone for a 21-7 lead before UNLV AF - Peeples 20-yd run went on its own long drive. Jackson took his team to a first-and-goal at the home five before getting sacked and then (Eberle kick) 8:19 tossing an interception in the end zone to Chris Sutton. The visitors had one more gasp after Howie Fuimaono THIRD QUARTER forced and recovered a fumble at the AFA 33. However, center Aaron Mueller sailed another snap over his quarterback’s AF- Carney 8-yd run (Eberle kick) 16:01 head for a 21-yard loss and UNLV eventually punted. In the third quarter, UNLV saw two drives go nowhere while the FOURTH QUARTER Falcons set up another Carney eight-yarder to essentially put the game out of reach at 28-7. Carney’s fourth TD rush AF- Carney 4-yd run came in the fourth quarter before Jim Ollis’ five-yarder finished the scoring.
