McLaughlin—the man who built our Church, school, rectory and convent buildings—we are featuring some of the religious architecture at OLQM that is his legacy. The Main Altar Reredos According to a 1941 Parish Monthly (the precursor to our weekly bulletin), Msgr. McLaughlin noted that “everything in the church is intended to teach in some way or another and to express in a fitting manner the great truths of our Holy Faith.” The altarpiece that rises behind the main altar of our church—also known as a reredos—expresses a sacred theme about the relation of religion to the social order.

The reredos has five painted panels. The central panel is, of course, Christ, showing His compassionate heart. Two upper panels to the left and right of the central panel show St. Dominic and St. Francis of Assisi; they represent “the protest of religion against the evils of social order … and the solution offered by the Catholic philosophy of life.” Two lower panels show St. Patrick and St. Boniface, “patron saints of the Irish and German immigrants who formed the great masses of Catholics throughout the country The painted panels and statuettes of the Main Altar Reredos, envisioned by and especially in New York” at the time. Msgr. McLaughlin, created by artist Frederick de Henwood, installed in 1940-41.

The reredos also has carved statuettes of 16 holy men and women. Since we are praying the Novena to St. John Vianney this week in advance of his feast day on August 4, it’s fitting to point out that he is one of four saints of parish priests depicted as a carved statue. These four were chosen by Msgr. McLaughlin and his artist with a special point in mind: St. John Vianney, by his priestly ministrations, “transformed his parish from one of the worst in France to a veritable heaven on earth.” St. John Nepomucene, the martyr of the Seal of the Confessional, “gave his life rather than reveal what he heard in confession.” St. Charles Borromeo and St. Philip Neri were both “beloved for their pastoral ministrations.” Visit ourladyqueenofmartyrs.org/our-church-history for further information. There, click on About Our Church Architecture and the Main Altar to find the stories of all the saints depicted as statues on the reredos. Above photo of the main altar is courtesy Rosalind Chan. Thank you to our communications office volunteer Lorraine Garvilla for creating the web pages on each of the reredos saint statues. More next week… St. John Vianney statuette

Weekend Mass Schedule: Bishop DiMarzio has requested that parishes evaluate their weekend schedule of Masses in relationship to the number of people who participate in the Mass and the number of priests available to celebrate the Masses. We encourage you to read the Bishop’s letter, which can be found on our website under the Diocesan News section (ourladyqueenofmartyrs.org/category/diocesan-news). Because we continue to have the help of Fathers Chris Turczany and Joseph Cunningham, we have not made a change in our weekend schedule at this time. We thank you for your continued prayers and support.—Bishop , Father Frank Passenant, Father Antonín Kocurek
