Cotati has a long history that began with its hexagonal plaza (La Plaza Park) and street grid that was designed during the 1890s by Newton Erin Armstrong Smyth as an alternative to the traditional grid. Dr. Thomas Page's barn once stood where the plaza is today, and each of the streets surrounding the plaza is named Farmer's Market 2017 after one of his sons. For a small city, Cotati has an impressive number of parks with varied recreation offerings for all ages. Chief among them is La Plaza Park in the heart of town, with a bandstand, picnic tables, play equipment and modern restrooms. Shaded by large trees, it is a popular gathering place for small groups or informal meals, as well as city festivals.
