T is a great pleasure to welcome you here today . Mattapoisett is indeed honored by this visit of the Old Dartmouth His t oric al Society ; and , as I hope to show , it is entirely fitting

that such a visit should take place . From the earliest settle

ments in Mattapoisett , the relationships between the seafaring and shipbuild ing citizens of this village and those of all portions

of Old Dartmou th were of the closest nature . Unfortunately , with the exception of those wise people of New Bed ford who show their good taste by choosing Mattapoisett ’ s shores for

their summer homes , there has been in recent years a deplorable tendency on the part of New B e dfo rdite s to regard Mattapoisett

as the furthest outpost of the wilderness . On many occasions have I driven the short seven miles to New Bedford for an ’ evening s entertainment , only to be greeted with an astonished , ' What ' You came all the way from Mattapoisett '” Bu t in the great days of whaling the people of New Bed ford were well acquainted with Mattapoisett and what the name stood

for . New Bed ford merchants , shipowners , whaling agents , cap m tains , and sailors which meant , of course , the entire ale population of the city knew that from the Mattapoisett ship yards came many and many of the finest wha le ships that New ’ M a t ta i B e df . o ord s great fleet could boast . Nor was that all p sett shipmasters captained New Bed ford whalers ; many young men of this v illage helped swell the crews of you r ships ; timber from the forests hereabouts was used in you r shipyards ; and on ' several occasions M a t t a poise t t shipbu ilde rs established yards in ’ New Bed ford . I won t go so far as to say that they showed

your shipbuilders a trick or two in the business , but at least they were highly regarded for what they were experts i n their

trade . In its d ay Mattapoisett was the most famous whaleship

bu ilding port in the world . The list of vessels known to have been bu il t at Mattapoisett now numbers 3 0 0 ; and all indica t ions show that i f the early Custom House records of Nantucket

and New Bed ford were available , this number would be doubled . Mattapoisett built ships not only for Nantucket and New Bed

ford , bu t for Salem , Boston , Yarmouth , Barnstable , Fairhaven , W Edgartown , Dartmouth , estport , Newport , Providence , New

. London , Sag Harbor , New York , and as far sou th as Delaware

P i er vessels were not only whalers , but sailed in the general

North European trade , in the wine trade to France and I taly , and the sal t trade with the islands o ff the coast of North A frica . She provided a fleet of coasters for the West Indies and southern coastwise trade , and vessels built where we sit tod ay brought back tea and spices from China to Boston and New York .

I t was from New Bed ford and Nantucket , however , that

- the bulk of Mattapoisett buil t vessels sailed . I t was in par t ic u l a r the great ind ustry of your whaling c ity that kept the shipyards and their 3 0 0 workers bustling along this waterfront . A n d so this afternoon I want to show how closely connected was the shipbuild ing and maritime commerce of Mattapoisett and New Bed ford for two centuries . The shipbuilders came to Mattapoisett some 2 5 years before the American Revolu tion , but before I come to that I wish to speak of the first link between Old Mat tapoisett and Old

Dartmou th . One of the best known citizens of Old Dartmou th was

Benj amin Crane , your noted land surveyor . The m an who worked with him for many years was Captain Benj amin Ham mond , one of the first settlers of Mattapoisett , and a very famous land surveyor in his own right . Some of his surveys of Old

Rochester lands are in the Plymouth Registry today . Thus , at ’ the very beginning of Mattapoisett s existence , one of her fore most citizens helped to lay out and plan much of the property and some of the towns of Old Dartmouth .

’ B ut this was by no means Captain Hammond s only oc c u a t io n p , nor his onl y l ink with Old Dartmouth . His is the

first record of maritime commerce between the two townships .

Bu t before we look into his homemade pigskin journal , let us glimpse the background of the events it brings to us .

1 6 2 The first settlers came to Old Dartmou th abou t 5 , bu t it was not until King Philip ’ s head was sa fely perched on a pole in Boston that white men d ared to come into the ' Plantacion of ” ' Ma t t a o st p y , as it was then called . This Plantacion of Matta ” o st i ic an p y was the southwestern portion of the Lands of S p p , ' ” 1 6 8 6 - in - incorporated in as Rochester Towne New England , and incl uding the present towns of Rochester , Marion , Matta o ise t t W p , and a very large share of areham . The first settlers who came to their wilderness home in Mattapoisett in 1 6 8 0 did not take up their homesteads along the harbor where the village W is now , bu t to the East in Pine Islands , where illiam Dexter and his four sons buil t their houses and a grist mill ; and to the W est , along the Mattapoisett River and on the Necks , where Benj amin Hammond and his four sons raised their houses and cleared their farms . Captain Benj amin Hammond , the sur

The more one reads the early records , the more one realizes that the opportunity of profitable commerce by sea was one 1 6 8 7 of the prime appeals of this territory . In , but seven years after these first settlers arrived , little sloops were engaged in such a brisk coasting trade that the Proprietors had to order ' Shin a les Cl a bou rd e angrily that all timber , Bourdes , Bolts , , ff Cooper Stu , or Shuch l ike , that is brought to the water side or any land ing place for transportation ou t of the town shall ” be forfi t e d and this prohibition was followed by several eq ually sharp warnings .

Now although Captain Hammond was a busy surveyor , a prosperous farmer with vast properties and over 1 0 0 head of cattle , a Justice of the Peace holding his commission from 'ueen

Anne , a Representative to the Great and General Court , and a

Selec tman of the Town of Rochester , he still found time to take ' advantage of this profi table commerce in Timber , Bourdes , ”

i ic a n W . S pp , and areham The cargos show pl ainly that the wealth of these lands lay in the forest fence posts , rails , tar , barrel staves , shingles , cord wood , maple coal , timber , and even ”

bongs . They were transported to Nantucket and Newport , and it must have been a perilous business , what with the unwield in ess of the homemade craft , the uncharted treacherous tides and shoals , and the horrible menace of pirates . Pirates hovered o ff all along the coast in those far days , and their d anger is evinced by the bold lettered relief with which Captain Ben 3 0 j amin wrote , on the occ asion when of them were condemned ' ir a t s Rhodisla n d at Newport , The p was hanged at j u ly the

1 9 th day 1 7 2 3 .

Captain Ben had a you ng apprentice named Tom Toby , and ’ fin i f Captain Ben s hair was not alread y grey , Tom must have i he , s d the job . For this footloose you th was forever running away and his good master again and again charged u p to Tom the expenses occurred in looking for him and dragging him bac k to the farm . Perhaps the most importan t items in the journal are the following

October the 2 3 day— 1 7 1 3 Tom Toby went from me to go a whal ing and he came to — ” me again in february the 1 5 the d ay 1 7 1 4 And the next year Oc tober the 2 9 th day 1 7 1 4 Tom Toby went from me to go a whaling and he came to again in j a n n u a ry the 3 l st d ay 1 7 1 5 for looking ( for him ) when he run away from me—2 0 ” shillings . It has always been supposed that whaling in this v icinity ’ was started by Joseph Russel in New Bed ford in the 1 7 5 0 s : yet here is a whaling record of 1 7 1 3 . I t is fairly obvious that u Tom Toby , a poor boy bo nd to a farmer as an apprentice , could have travelled neither to N antucket nor to the Cape , where whaling is known to have been u nder weigh at this earl y d ate . Moreover there is in existence a record of a whaling voyage

W 1 7 3 6 . from areham in In other words , then , in add ition to the coastwise trade in timber prod uc ts , whaling was an estab lishe d maritime pursui t along these northern shores of B uz z a r ds Bay from almost the earliest dates of settlement . Captain Ben Hammond lived j ust to the northwest of the picturesq ue Arch Bridge a hal f mile up the Mattapoisett River , where the cellar hole of his house may still be seen . As the o years rolled n , the descendants of Captain Ben and his three brothers populated a whole v illage along this river . It was a flourishing community with grist and saw and shingle mills , a church , a tannery , iron works and blacksmith shops , a school , W stores , and , below the Herring eir , many l ittle landings buil t along the shores of the capacious salt pond which ran in there before the railroad embankment closed up its mouth . For over a hundred years sloops and schooners sailed from these wharves with timber , cord wood , tar , resin , turpentine , and pink granite for mill stones , carrying these cargos to Nan Sa v a n ah W tucket and Newport , to and the est Indies .

These vessels , many of them , were built along the lower

Mattapoisett River , on the harbor , and in Pine Island ; bu t their builders can in no real sense be called shipbuilders . They were farmers who went down to the sea as a means to make more money than they could farming ; and their vessels , although cal cu l a t e d to withstand the pounding of the Atlantic Ocean , were

- clumsy and blunt bowed , and today would seem little better

. Ha m m on dtow n than scows But even as , as this settlement on Y the River was rightly named , grew into a thriving ankee community , the future center of the village of Mattapoisett be came established along the harbor and it was professional ship bu ilders who pu t it there .

the Strangely enough , one of the first shipbuilders , perhaps W first , to come to Mattapoisett , was a man named illiam Rotch . W the W hether this was illiam Rotch later of Nantucket , Lon ’ don , Paris , and New Bed ford , I don t know . I n fac t , the only 1 7 60 W thing I know is that in , illiam Rotch , of Rochester , ship o n wright , sold the present Lowe property the harbor , and then disappears from sight . i Aside from this mysterious figure , the f rst shipbuilder to come to Mattapoisett was Charles Stetson , a shipwright from the yards of Scituate in the North River , where his ancestors 1 5 2 had been building ships for several generations . In 7 Stetson made a clicker with Deacon Constant Dexter , whose homestead comprised almost this entire village and more besides , and purchased , along with numerous woodlots , a strip of land roughly between the present Pearl and Barstow Streets ex tending from the shore three - quarters of a mile back into the forest to what is now Park Street , but was then the main highway from Ham m on dto wn to Pine Islands . As far as I know , there was n ot then a house in what is now Mattapoisett V illage ; bu t within 2 5 years that is , by the time the Minute Men rushed to Lexington , no less than eight other shipbuilders , besides to numerous mariners and shipyard laborers , came this shore , established shipyards and wharves , buil t their homes and cleared their farms . 1 8 5 So , years ago this summer , the sound of the hammers of —the shipc a r pe n t ers was heard along this harbor for the first time a resonance that rang over the fields and woods for more than a century , a sound so penetrating that woodsmen getting ship timber in the forest needed no watches to tell them when

- noon and suppertime had arrived , a hammering so all pervad ing that old people still remember i t as the dominant feature of

Mattapoisett . A t first glance one might wonder why skilled craft—smen would leave established businesses and come to this ou t - o f the ’ way , almost u ninhabited spot . But a moment s reflect ion will show that it possessed the prime requ isites for a desirable ship bu ild ing location . Here was a fine harbor in those d ays of small wooden ships the best between the North River and New

Bed ford . Here was a source of su pply an almost u ntouched supply of v irgin timber extend ing miles and miles inland . And close at hand was the third necessity markets that were greed y ’ for ships ; for N antucket s whaling and maritime commerce was W booming , and the little village on the est side of the Acushnet

River was sending ou t more and more vessels every year . Charles Stetson ’ s shipyard lay at the foot of Pearl Street extend ing from the present Town Wharf property over to where Mr . Stackpole lives . His house , which was built before 1 7 5 7 , was , it it almost certain , the lovely old house now occupied kli B a r e . by Mrs . He must have prospered ; for before long others came in 1 7 60 N athaniel Cushing from Pembroke and G ideon Barstow of the famous Barstow builders in Hanover ; 1 7 6 2 1 7 67 in Stephen Cushing from Pembroke ; in , Joshua

Studley , and later Seth Barstow , from Tisbury ; and from then on the property along the harbor passed to so many shipbu ilders and with such frequency , that it is hard to keep trac k of it . Most of these men bought strips of land extending inland from the harbor hal f a mile or more . They bu il t their houses and barns close to the shore , almost in their shipyards ; and from these their plowed fields , pastures , and orchards stretched back ; for in those pioneering days a shipbuilder was also a farmer if he wanted to eat .

Of course , at this earl y date , it is impossible to learn of the precise position of each shipyard , bu t in general it suffices to say that the Nathaniel Cushing yard lay in the corner of the harbor at Cannonville ; the Joshua Studley and later Seth Bar ’ stow s yard on the present R . L . Barstow waterfront , and Gideon ’ ’ A Barstow s yard between Mrs . Hinsdale s and the present n h r c o a ge property . Of the vessels that were built before the

Revolu tion nothing is known , save for one , and that only be cause it was named the R ochest e r and was wrecked off Nan tucket in 1 7 74 while starting on a whaling voyage . But from scattered sources we find that the shipyards were active ; that more mariners came , more wharves were built , more men sailed south and returned with molasses , corn , and sugar ; more men blo ckm a k e rs came to work in the shipyards , blacksmiths , , sail makers , caulkers , and various other craftsmen ; and the houses along the c a r t p a ths from shore to forest increased in number .

Yet as a whole , shipbuilders d id not prosper in those days . Few people today realize what hard times existed in Massachusetts 1 7 6 0 1 7 7 5 from to , when the trouble between the colonies and

England was coming to a boil . There was practically no money i n those days . Even building a ship was done by barter each vessel was the property of a group of men who contributed either labor or materials toward her construction . Then if she were sold to some merchant in Nantucket or Dartmouth or New port , he promised to pay for her out of the proceeds of her voyage . And her voyage was so apt to be a total loss . The u m mortality of those little vessels was tremendous ; gales , charted coasts , French and Spanish privateers , pirates all took ’ a heavy toll . I f the merchant couldn t pay for the vessel , what happened to the shipbuilder who was responsible to the men who had financed her '

Charles Stetson , the first of the shipbuilders , furnishes a sad 1 7 67 1 7 6 8 example of this . In and numerous court executions were obtained against him , and the plaintiffs in these c ases show plainly with whom Stetson did business and for whom he buil t ships . They were Jonathan B urnell , Joseph Rotch , and Joseph Mc P h er Nicols of Nantucket , and Joseph Rotch , Jr . and John son of Dartmouth all important shipping merchants of those M P he rson V places , c being the ictim whose wharves , ships , and warehouses on the Acushnet River were burned by the British in 1 7 7 8 .

Stetson struggled along for over a year , selling his woodlots o ff and sal tm a rshes piece by piece to pay his debts , until finally there was but one left ; and on a June day in 1 7 6 8 the Constable Wa c a r t a th rode along Pine Island y , turned down the p to the shore , drew up to the house still standing there , and pulled ou t a warrant .

you cause to be paid and satisfied to the said Joseph Rotch ,

Chattels , or Lands , we command you to take the body of the said Charles Stetson and him commit into our Goal at Plymou th

And so the man who had first brought to the shores of ox ~ drawn Mattapoisett harbor the sawpit , the scaffold ing , the loads of timber , and the ever sounding hammers of the c aulkers , d went by the board and lost his shipyard . He continue to l ive i n R evol u in Mattapoisett , as did his sons , for they fought the tion as Rochester sold iers ; but when the war was over , the sons , and perhaps the old father , moved to New Bed ford and estab lishe d a shipyard qu ite a way north of the present bridge , where the Stetson sons built over 5 0 ships for the you ng village of New Bed ford ; and the descend a n ts of these men were New Bed ford i whal ng captains for many years .

Bu t Charles Stetson was not the only one . Every ship bu ilder who c ame to Mattapoisett before the Revolu tion failed n save one . Gideo Barstow , who bought his first shipyard prop e r t W 1 7 60 y from illiam Rotch in , was as prosperous as his competitors were un fortu nate , for he not only weathered the 1 7 8 4 Revolu tion , bu t by he and his sons owned every shipyard but one along this waterfront .

In that year his son , Gideon Jr . purchased the R . L . Barstow property and continued build ing there for hal f a century ; and

. W eight years later , Gideon Sr sold to another son , Captain ilson Old W Barstow , his illiam Rotch yard and what is now the W Lewis Bolles property , where Captain ilson built the house now l ived in by Mr . Bolles .

As this would indicate , a younger crop of shipbuilders was

. appearing Two of these were the Cannon brothers , Ebeneezer

. ; Jr and Eliakim and it was the descendants of these two , along with those of Gideon Barstow , who made Mattapoisett famous for shipbuild ing . For three generations Cannons and Barstows

ran most of the shipyards and furnished the finest ship carpenters .

This hereditary craftsmanship is most interesting , and reminds one of the old guilds in Europe , where the secrets of each craft were handed down for generations from father to son . A fter the Revolu tion a few names of vessels built in Mat i t t t a o se . 1 p begin to appear The first , in 7 7 8 , was the sloop Eliza A u coo t , built in by Abner Pease , probably to carry salt from the Hiller saltworks in that vicinity . Abner Pease con t in u e d to own a small shipyard there , building sloops and schoon 1 8 0 4 ers , until , when he moved to North Fairhaven where he built vessels for many years .

Likewise , we begin to get some record of vessels built on the Mattapoisett River . Accord ing to tradition , vessels were built there d uring the Revolution which were used to dodge the

British warships in Long Island Sound . There were several small shipyards along the River ; bu t the last and best known was on W the East bank only a few rods below the present Herring eir , W and was run by George ashington Gifford , the grand father of

Henry Rogers . Only a few sloops and schooners of his build B u u s 2 0 0 ing are known , except the Brig r t , of tons , built in

1 8 0 1 . Tradition has it that when she was launched , she slid across the river with such rapid ity that she stuck firmly in the mud on the opposite side , and it took six weeks to get her ou t and down into deep water . This trouble was prophetic , for A se h two years later she was lost at sea . Her master , Capt . p Willi a m a nd M a Price , who had been master of the ship ry of

New Bed ford , was lost with her .

After the Revolution , shipbuilding in the village yards evi de n tly started in where it had left off , and began to flourish . In ' 1 7 8 6 Minister Le Baron wrote : Navigation is so much the o b j e c t of our attention as to be a great disadvantage to our hus bandry we have abou t 4 vessels employed in the whaling

fishery , about the principal source of our specie . Shipbuilding and iron are two branches of manu factory not unprofitable . Scattered records are being brought to light revealing , so far , some 2 5 vessels built in the nex t twenty years for New Bed ford ,

. Nantucket , Newport , Prov idence , New London , and New York An old account book in the Whaling Museu m gives the first vessel , whose name is known , to be buil t specifically for a New Thom as Bed ford merchant . She was the Brig , buil t by Captai n

Wilson Barstow in 1 8 0 5 . She was used in the merchant trade between New Bed ford and New York for a n umber of years , and then seems to have been sold bac k to Mattapoisett . 1 8 0 0 1 8 1 2 From to , that is , j ust before the war with Eng land , this waterfront became a beehive of activ ity . Meager records alone give three , four , and five vessels a year ; and that these are but a frac tion is shown by an article i n the Massa ’ chu se t t s 1 8 1 5 Historical Society s Collec tion for , which states ' At this harbor ( Mattapoisett ) there is an increasing village 40 3 4 of perhaps houses , or wharves , a ropewal k , and shipyards , where in 1 8 1 1 upwards of 8 0 0 0 tons of shipping were con struc ted . Five vessels were ship rigged , and of the burthen of ” 3 0 0 or more tons .

8 0 0 0 Now much as I would l ike to believe it , that tons seems as if it must be a misprint . That would be twenty ships of 4 0 0 tons each , and even in the balmy d ays l ater on this figure was never reached . But it may be so . There were at least six shipyards going full blast , and if they buil t only three vessels a piece , as often happened in l ater years , this total would nearly be W reached . And i t is known that at this time illiam Moore was 0 0 - - building 4 ton ships for the New York European trade . There A ndes ' e no ho n 1 8 1 0 is a record of two of these , the and the p , in alone . At any rate , it is obvious that a tremendous amount of shipbuild ing was being done , more than in any other port in

Sou theastern Massachusetts .

Of these early shipyards not much is known . Yet one anecdote has come down the years , showing in what esteem the

- skill of these ship carpenters was held . One d ay a barefoot man walked down the sandy cart - track to one of the shipyards and asked the master carpen ter for a job . The latter demanded ’ some proof of the appl icant s skill , whereupon the newcomer ie ze d s a broadaxe , balanced himsel f on a huge stick of timber with his toes spread wide apart and c urled over the edge , raised the axe over his head , and brought it down agai n and again , striking the spaces between his toes in swift succession . He got the job . This may or may not be an exaggeration . The skill of — W these ship carpenters was something for us to marvel at . ith a few crude tools a broad axe , an adz , a chisel , a saw , and a ham mer they could fashion rough pieces of timber into a fleet ' sailing vessel . And many a man among them could wi th the broad axe hew so closely to the line , and so smoothly , that the ” plane could hardly improve the surface .

W 1 8 1 2 i m a r . d . N o The of , with H M Brig r in Buzzards Bay , put a temporary crimp in activities ; bu t after 1 8 1 5 we come to the 4 5 years when the American merchant fleet became the largest in the world , and when New Bed ford became the center of the whaling ind ustry , one of the great businesses of the world .

As the years rolled on , Mattapoisett became the premier supplier of ships for that ind ustry . Many of the vessels in the whaling fl eet were merchant ships rebuil t and al tered into whalers ; but as the years went by , agents realized the wisdom of purchasing sturdy vessels built specifically for whaling by men experienced and skilled in the craft . These shipyards of high reputation for their wha leships lay almost wholly in Mattapoisett and within the confines of Old Dart o f mouth . Of the best known these , one was in Dartmouth , three in New Bed ford , two in Fairhaven , and five in Mattapoisett .

And yet , during these years the population of Mattapoisett was much smaller than any of the rest . She was , in truth , a village of shipbu ilders .

Al though a great deal is known of the 2 0 0 - odd ships buil t in Mattapoisett during these years , of their builders and the yards , and of the Nantucket and New Bed ford firms for which they sailed , it is mani festly impossible in a short paper to speak of even a fraction of them ; so I will give merely a resum' of the shipyards and of those whalers which became well - known to

New Bed ford people . To the west of the present town wharves and extending t around by the foot of Pearl S . , lay the yard of Gideon Barstow

Sr . , which later passed to his son Gideon Jr . and his grandson Wi ’ Wilson . lson Barstow s yard was one of the most noted of its time . He was no business man he failed three times but he hired the finest master builders available , and for over a quarter of a century , down his ways slid three , four , and five ships a year , and the majority sailed out of the harbor and around the Neck to join the New Bedford and Fairhaven whaling fleets . From his yard , also , came the largest vessel ever bu ilt in e o r e Lee 6 5 0 1 8 5 4 Mattapoisett , the Ship G g , of tons , built in for the shipping firm of Cabot 86 Lee 85 Co . of Boston . On the presen t Town W/ harf property was the shipyard of 1 7 9 2 r . Ebeneezer Cannon J , established in and continuing until

first newspaper . The present Shipyard Park was the site of the famous

1 8 1 2 . Holmes shipyard , started in by Josiah Holmes Sr and con a nd e er tin n ing until the Bark W r , built where the bandstand 1 8 7 8 sits now , slid down the ways in , the last vessel ever lau nched in Mattapoisett . Josiah Holmes first formed a partnership with Benj amin Barstow ; bu t in 1 8 2 6 they agreed to d isagree , and after tha t Holmes ran the yard by himsel f and then with ’ his sons , Josiah Jr . and Jonathan . A fter the old man s death , in the firm of Josiah Holmes Jr . and Brother was well known i deed n New Bed ford , and particularly was it popular with the

'uaker whaling agents , for Josiah Jr . was of this faith . A fter W a r the Civil had ruined the industry , he moved to New Bed ford

Co . and started the Holmes Coal , la ter c arried on by his son and grandson . Where the Anchorage is now was the yard of Will iam 1 8 0 0 Moore , established in and perhaps the first to bu ild large 8 1 8 . 1 ships for New York Moore failed i n , and the yard was pu rchased by Uncle Leonard Hammond , as he was called , a very versatile business man , and one of the shrewdest of shrewd Yan kees . He ran the Plymou th Cou nty House , a tavern which sat between the present Anchorage and the street , and which burned on a bitterly cold Febru ar y night in 1 8 5 5 when New Bed ford sent a fire engine down that wou ldn ’ t p ump u nti l its insides were heated by hot bricks . ( Also , it is related , many of the fire fighters were in a like fi x u ntil rum was used for the same purpose ) . I t is said that on one occasion a farmer on the Neck had run up q uite a bill for rum at the Cou nty House , and Uncle

Leonard had his weather eye out for some means of collecting . The farmer had a very l arge hog ; bu t there was a law that i f a

man possessed onl y one pig , it could not be attached for debt . his So Uncle Leonard bided his time until sow had a l itter . Then h e gave the runt to the farmer and drove pell - mell over to the

Neck and took the hog for debt .

Besides running the shipyard , the Cou nty House , an exten sive sal t works on the Neck , a coastwise trade to Charleston ,

Savannah , and New Orleans , Uncle Leonard was a Government

Lighthouse contractor . He buil t the lights at Mattapoisett and 1 8 3 8 Gay Head , and in he sailed from Mattapoisett with two ships and a large crew of men to construct two lighthouses on the Gul f of Mexico . I t is related that Uncle Leonard did not

finish the Mattapoisett light within the specified time , and when the Governmen t Inspector arrived , Uncle Leonard sent a man posthaste to lay some planks on barrels to give the impression that the floor was completed . A fter a friendly glass of rum , Uncle Leonard d rove the Inspector down to view the job ; but u nfortunately the Inspector stepped on the end of a plank not over a barrel , and d isappeared into the foundation . W/ Next to the East from the Anchorage , on the old illiam W Rotch yard , Captain ilson Barstow built until he failed in 1 8 0 7 W . illiam Moore took it over and buil t u ntil he failed ; and then the yard was run by El iakim Cannon until be failed in

1 8 2 7 . I t is said that in this yard the bowsprits of the ships on the stocks hung far ou t over the street , so i f you had arrived in Mattapoisett 1 1 5 years ago in the New Bed ford and Plymou th

Stage Coach , you would have ridden under the overhanging rigging as you jounced up to the Mattapoisett House across the street .

A t the foot of Mechanic Street , on the present Hinsdale property , was the famous Meigs shipyard . Joseph Meigs , Esq . , was a prominent Citizen , State Senator , prosperous shipping merchant , and successful shipbu ilder . He built and ran an old fashioned country tavern and store in what is now the Bay

V iew Hotel . The tavern business must have been thriving , for i t is said that Squire Meigs stood on a hill and every farm he could see was mortgaged for rum . In his early days he was Com mission Merchant for the Rotches , Howlands , and Rodmans of

New Bed ford , handling their trade in Naval Stores , Lumber ,

Sugar , Molasses , and Cotton in Savannah , Charleston , and New ’ York . Of Squire Meigs two sons , Joseph Jr . was by far the smarter , and his tragic death in his early thirties when he had ’ j ust taken over the shipyard , broke the old man s spirit , and he

1 8 4 6 . passed away a few years later , in The other son , Loring , carried on the business until he was ru ined by the panic of 1 8 5 7 . Down at Cannonville at the foot of Ship Street , were two more yards of high reputation . The first was that of Benj amin

Barstow , a nephew of old G ideon , who came from the Hanover 0 0 shipyards before 1 8 , learned his trade in Mattapoisett , and then moved to New Bed ford where he bought the shipyard which had been run by Colonel George Claghorn before he went to

Boston and bu il t the Constitution . Here Benj amin built ships for several years ; then retu rned to Mattapoisett and went into W the partnership with Josiah Holmes . hen this broke u p in

1 8 2 6 , he started the yard at Cannonville , later taking his sons ,

N athan H . and Henry into the firm , which continued in busi ness u ntil the d iscovery of gold in California in 1 8 49 sent N athan and Henry , along with over a hund red other Mattapoisett men , arou nd the Horn and u p to the gold fields . From this yard lli e Wi a m . N came many ships , among them the Ship C y , the

first live oak vessel bu ilt in Ma ttapoiset t , whose workmanship w a s so expert that 1 0 years later a New Bed ford newspaper spoke of it . The other yard at Cannonville was that of Ebeneezer Can ’ 1 8 0 s rd . 3 non 3 This yard ran for onl y a few years d uri ng the , but at least two fine ships a year were l aunched there to aug ment the Nantucket whaling fleet . On one occ asion Dr . Rob bins tells in his d iary of two full rigged ships launched on suc i cess ve d ays . What a business this was when these shipyards were in full swing ' Anywhere from six to sixteen vessels were launched each hi ht ide year , and i f the g came in the cool of the evening , the townspeople flocked to the shore to see the graceful vessel gl ide into the water . Four hund red men thronged the streets every morning , noon , and night , on their way to work in the ship o r yards their allied shops . Fi fteen or twenty whalers sailing reg l l u a r y . Schooners and brigs coming into the wharves with lum ber yellow pine fro m Ch ar leston and Savannah ; live oak from Jacksonv ille and New Orleans ; white pine and oak and spruce from Maine . In the bac k sections of the town a dozen saw

- mills whined all day long . Seventy fiv e yoke of oxen hauled the timber from the woods to the mills and from the mills to the shipyards .

The whole waterfront was a scene of intense activity ; ves sels with their tall rigging towering over the wharves ; hal f - bu ilt ships bellying u p on the stocks ; c aulkers perched on the sc a f

1 8 2 8 river . And in September , the New Bed ford Mercury had this to say

' Despatch The ship Alexander Barclay , Joseph Du n 1 4 bar , Master , left this port on the th May and arrived

in Baltimore in 4 d ays passage , where her ballast was 8 0 0 hhds discharged , and the bulk of of Tobacco taken V 1 2 t h on board . She left the Capes of irginia on the 2 7 of June , arrived at Bremen in d ays passage , dis 2 0 0 charged and sold part of her cargo , took on board 5 0 tons of ballast , arrived in Gottenburg in hours , dis o 60 0 charged her ballast and t ok on board tons of iron , 2 th 3 1 and left on the 5 August . She arrived here in 4 days passage , having performed the voyage in months

and 1 3 days . But I suppose the best known New Bed ford W haler buil t ou n hoe ni x in Mattapoisett d uring this period was the Y g P , built in 1 8 2 2 by Barstow and Holmes . In a private New Bed ford newspaper O f the period we read this rather prej udiced a c count :

2 8 1 8 2 2 M r . . September , ; Arrived , John A Parker s new ship from Mattapoisett ; she has been for some time on her way , being unfortuna te , we u nderstand , that her name is the You ng Phoe nix and Captain Joseph Dunbar is going master of her .

The Y ou ng Phoe nix sailed for four years between New

Bed ford and Sweden in the iron trade for John A . Parker , 1 8 5 and then he handled her as a W haler for 3 0 years . I n 7 W 85 she was sold to illiam Phillips Son , and it was while sailing for that firm that she made the famous resc ue of the 42 sur v ivo rs of the wreck of the Scottish Bark Si ra t/a more on one of the Crozet Islands in the Ind ian Ocean . This was her last 1 8 7 9 voyage , for in she was abandoned in the Arc tic ice pack .

Yet the old ship would not give up . Instead of going to pieces , she remained nearly intac t , and was reportedly carried about ' ” by the ice for a year or two , a silent and deserted ghost ship to mystify observers .

From 1 8 3 0 to 1 8 4 0 over fi fty wh a l e ships were launched from the Mattapoisett yards . To Nantucket went most of these , although not a few sailed under flags of New Bed ford firms ; and of cou rse many Nantucket whalers ultimately were sold to New Bed ford . A Nantucket anecdote shows in what high regard these

vessels were held . Some 3 0 years ago a Mattapoisett man was

visiting in Nantucket , and without letting on where he was

from , asked an old whaleman where Nantucket got her whale ships . The old timer replied

’ Oh , we got em from everywheres ; but we got our best

ones from a l ittle place near New Bed ford , a town called

Mattapoisett . The best known whaler bu ilt here d uring these ten years S/J a ron 85 1 8 was the Ship , built by Gideon Barstow Son in 3 7 1 8 42 for Gibbs and Jenney of Fairhaven . In the Sharon , - P a cific while whaling in mid , was the scene of a peculiar

mutiny . The crew were all ou t chasing whales , leaving the

K . captain , the cabin boy , and three anaka sailors to tend ship K Sneaking u p behind the captain , the anakas struc k him dead , W and then chased the cabin boy in the rigging . hen the boats

returned , the natives threatened to kill the first man to set

foot on board . The crew waited u ntil dark ; then the 3 rd

mate climbed u p the rudder and through the stern windows , and by a attack killed one of the mutineers and held o ff the others u ntil the rest of the crew got aboard . The ru nning of a shipyard was an undertaking requiring

a great deal of shrewdness , j udgment , and business acumen . Not only did the shipbuilder need a complete knowledge of f ship construction , and the vagaries of d i ferent kinds of tim 5 0 6 0 ber , but he also handled or men all of whom had to

be good . He had to be able to calculate up into tens of thous ands of doll ars on a job involving all sorts of material tim

ber , iron , oaku m , lead , paint , spars , canvass , cord age , and var

nish . He had to keep his eye on the general financial con

d ition of the nation , for shipbuilding is always the first in d u s t r y that depression brings to a standstill . He had to keep in touch with all sorts of new appliances and size up their

true worth at short notice . And above all he had to be a a d shrewd man at fi nances and keeping costs down , for an dit ion a l few hu ndred dollars in costs would come near to

pu tting him ou t of business .

In the early days , money actual money was a rare

commod ity ; and consequently , in order to enable himsel f to

pay his men , every shipbu ilder ran a store in connection with

his yard . The present Anchorage Gift Shop was such a store , buil t by Barstow 8L Holmes in 1 8 2 0 . These stores were kept stocked with provisions brought from New York by packet sloops , o f which each shipbu ilder had one or two ; and with the goods thus bought at wholesale , the workmen were paid at shi c a r e n ter retail . No p p received wages ; he traded at his em ’ lo er s p y store , and from time to time a reckoning was made and the amount of his purchases balanced against so many d ays ’ work on the ship . One is struck , and amused , by the frequency wi th which these two col umns prec isely balance each other

Only rarel y d id the shipbu ilder owe his men any c ash . The bu ild ing of each ship called for an elaborate contract speci fying each item in great detail . From the nails in the hull to the varnish on the topmast , not a thing was left u nder stood , and any change of these sacred decisions req uired weighty 1 8 5 6 deliberation . W . R . ing of New Bed ford Everything had , of course , been definitely stated , bu t the bu ilder wanted to move the mizzen mast fu rther forward . The following is the reply of the Wing firm

The shipyard owners , of course , ran their whole ship building business , bu t often they seem not to have taken direc t charge of the construction of the vessels . This was the end . For the last time Arvin Cannon with his lips pursed over his toothless gums carefully drew ou t the ’ vessel s hull in the loft over the Holmes Office . For the last time the hammering of the caulkers awakened echoes through the streets and across the farms into the woods . For the last time the shipc a r pe n t e rs had their glass of grog at eleven and four . And for the last time the townspeople gathered to see the graceful vessel start slowly , and then gl ide down the greased ways into the harbor of the shipbuilders . I t was the end of a Yankee seaport village where native W born sons worked all their l ives in a native ind ustry . here every house and most of them are still here was the home i n W sh ca r e te r . of a p p , outfitter , or whaleman here the schools and churches and homes were bu il t with money from the shipyards . And where practically every man was an expert cra ftsman of high in tegrity . I t seems entirely fi tting that the mizzen mast of the

Wa nde re r should stand as a flagpole in Shipyard Park , a few feet from where she was buil t . And even more , it seems a a nde e proper coincidence that the W r r , the l ast vessel buil t in Mattapoisett should be the l ast whaleship to sail from New re Bed ford New Bed ford , whose whaling ind ustry was ’ sponsible for Mattapoisett s shipbuilding fame .
