SUB THEME: GODLY LEADERSHIP AND CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP.

TOPIC: Christian Discipleship: Essence and Effects. TEXT: Acts 2:41-47.

AIMS: i. to findout what marks out Christian Discipleship; ii. to appreciate the impact of Christian Discipleship in the life of the Church; iii. to see the consequences of failing to carry out Christian Discipleship.

INTRODUCTION: The word ‘Christian’ in ‘Christian Discipleship’ suggests that other forms of discipleship exist. It demands that we examine whether the current discipleship schemes/efforts in Churches meet withBiblical standards. Some have been engaged in Christian Discipleship but there remains the question about the quality and depth of commitment of such efforts needed to biblical stipulations. The key statement of today’s study is that Christian discipleship should be done well, longitudinally, painstakingly and with enviable thoroughness. In one word, Christian discipleship should be done really biblically.

STUDY GUIDE 1. Discuss briefly what constitutes the essence of Christian Discipleship. a. It gives birth to new Christian (John 3:3); b. It Produces those who demonstrate obedience to the revealed truth of Christ (John 8:31); c. It Produces those who epitomize the love of Christ, especially for fellow disciples (John 13:35); d. It Produces passionate proclaimers of the word of God (Mk.16:20; 1 Cor.9:16); e. It Produces those who live to please God (Eph.5:1-2; 2 Tim.2:4); f. It Produces genuine participants in the fellowship and communion of the saints (Acts 2:42); g. It Produces Christians who desires to be like-Christ (1 Cor.11:1); h. It produces those who live in the will of God, that is, in sanctification and honour (1 Thess.4:3-4). 2. Discuss the benefits to God’s Church when discipleship efforts discussed above are applied in God’s Church today. 3. What are some consequences of the Church’s failure to do discipleship? a. the Church will be filled with people who lack depth in faith (Luke 8:13; Col.2:6-7) b. there will be a shortage of faithful leaders and disciple makers (Luke 10:2; Heb.5:12) c. there will be so many “half baked” Christians in the Church (Hos. 7:8) d. the Church will find it difficult to develop to herfullest potential (Acts 2:41-47) e. The Devil and his agents willgain much ground in the Church.

CONCLUSION: If the Church today does Christian Discipleship with conscientiousness, we will secure the future of the Church. If the Church fails to do it, she will give more ground to the devil.God’s Church should be committed to and do Christian discipleship.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The Church failure in discipleship promotes Satan’s success in his own discipleship efforts.

A SAFE STRONGHOLD OUR GOD IS STILL,

A safe stronghold our God is still, A trusty shield and weapon; He’ll help us clear from all the ill That hath us now o’ertaken. The ancient prince of hell Hath risen with purpose fell; Strong mail of craft and power He weareth in this hour; On earth is not his fellow.

With force of arms we nothing can, Full soon were we down-ridden; But for us fights the proper Man, Whom God Himself hath bidden. Ask ye, who is this same? Christ Jesus is His name, The Lord Sabaoth’s Son; He, and no other one, Shall conquer in the battle.

And were this world all devils o’er, And watching to devour us, We lay it not to heart so sore; Not they can overpower us. And let the prince of ill Look grim as e’er he will, He harms us not a whit; For why? — his doom is writ; A word shall quickly slay him.

God’s Word, for all their craft and force, One moment will not linger, But, spite of hell, shall have its course; ’Tis written by His finger. And though they take our life, Goods, honor, children, wife, Yet is their profit small; These things shall vanish all: The City of God remaineth! CHRISTMAS CAROL 22ND DECEMBER

DIOCESAN ANTHEM. 1. Lagos Diocese, premier Diocese, Of ; We are primus inter pares, First among equals, bless’d one. Tenth December, nineteen, nineteen Praise the Lord! He’s done great things, Lagos Diocese, foremost Diocese, Came to be, through love and peace.

2. Our Divine Mandate of five-fold, Clear and apt, to build the Church; From above came like that of old, For the mission of the Church, Priestly, Pastoral, Prophetic, Pray’r and Praise to reach a peak. Help, O Lord Thy charge to fulfil, Thy perfect will to do still.

3. God our Father, bless our Diocese, Bless our Bishop, we pray Thee, Bless Thy people of this Diocese, Our existence, keep for Thee, All believers to edify, And Thy name to glorify, Multiply Disciples for Thee, And at last to reign with Thee. Amen. GOD: OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH

Longman Modern English dictionary defines the word, refuge as: shelter or protection from danger, distress or difficulty. To take refuge is to put oneself in a place or state that provide protection.

It also gives the meaning of ‘strength’ thus: “capacity to exert force; ability to resist attack; capacity to resist strain, stress etc. Knowing God as our refuge enables us to trust Him more. David is a great example of someone who knew God as his refuge. At different points in his life, David was on the run from people who wanted to kill him, but he always found safety in God. “My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge” (Psalm 62:7–8.

We need not fear situations or people who threaten our well-being, whether in a physical or spiritual sense. There is no situation we will ever face that is out of God’s control, so the best place to be, always, is right with Him. “The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs18:10).

Israel was always in trouble with her neighbors, but while other nations boasted of their high cities walls, secured with iron gates and protected by fierce warriors, Israel was in a safer position than all of them till date. God has been her refuge and her strength. Therefore, the people of Israel could live in a

confident manner, regardless of the situation around them, because they know God is in their midst. We can be confident that God will be our refuge in troublesome times. When things are changing and threatening around you, focus your attention on God. He is with you; you have His presence, since you believe and put your trust in Him. He is your refuge, you have His protection. He will help you by His power.

No matter what our circumstance, the safest place to be is always in the center of God’s will. He promises to be our refuge: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:5–6). God will defend and keep you all the days of your life in Jesus name. Have a safe and blessed week.
