The Hellenedyne ismyflagship regenerativereflexreceiver .SinceIwasachildIwanted todesignasimpletuberadiothatcould “hear it all” .Wouldyoubelievethereisasingleactive devicereceiverthat:1)canheardowntothenoisefloor,2)employsnoRFtransformers,3)has regenerationthatissmoothasglass,4)uses16ohmearphones,5)runsoff18voltsofplate,6) iscomposedofonlytenparts,and7)usesasingle?Goddecidedtomakethisourreality.

2. 3GK5 TRIODE

RecentlyIreadmyfirst450pagevacuumtubetheorybook.Usingthenewknowledgeand sophisticatedpowermodelsIarrivedatauniquetriode,the 3GK5 .Thismodest $5 B7Gbasetube canberunofftwo“D”typeandtwo“9V”typebatteriesforabout30hours.Thistriodeexhibitsa largeplateresistanceandtransconductanceatlowvoltages.Thiswasdeterminedusingdatafrom manufacturer’scurves.At20VIcalculatethe3GK5tohaveaplatecurrentof5.2mAat0Vgrid. Plateresistanceis4660ohmsandtransconductanceamassive 7300MHOs .Spacechargetubes, forexamplethe 12K5 popularizedby Norm Leal ’svenerableregenboast15000MHOsbutreach only15%ofthe3GK5’spower,inmycircuit.The3GK5isahighMu(78)“gaincontrolled”triode boastingdualcathodeleads,4.7dBnoisefigure,2.8Vheater(450mA),anddissipationof2.5W. The3GK5uses“framegrid ”construction:wireonetenthousandthsofaninchindiameter iswrappedtightlyaroundasturdypictureframestructure(photoabove).Normallygridsareself supportingandspotweldedtosupports.Therigidframegridsupportseachgridwirevianotches. Avacuumtube’sgainisinverselyrelatedtodistancefromitscathodetogrid,aswellascathode surfacearea.Framegridsallowproductionofconsistentlyhighgain( Gm )tubes.Thetubeshave lownoisefiguressincenoiseisinverselyrelatedtoGm.Capacitancesareloweredduetoashield existingbetweenthegridandplate.Basicallytheseare beam .Framegridsaretechnology from1958whenstartedtakingoff.Theseruggedbottleswereusedforvideo/radar.

3. 1AD DESIGN MUSING

Most 1AD radiosfallintothreegroups:superheterodyne,regenerative,or Harkness style regenreflex.Somedesignssimplychopoffanexistingradiobeyondthefirstgainstageandrely onsensitivealbeitintricatesoundpoweredphones.Ifelt1ADsuperheterodyneswereuninviting: complex,lowoverallgain,andsingle“ can ”selectivity.Contrarytocommonbeliefaregenerative radiodoesnothaveinfinitegain.Gainof~78dBcanbeachievedbeforebreakingintooscillation; another7dBforusingaregenin“CW”(beyondoscillationaladirectconversion)mode.Regenis onlypowerfulenoughtoboostupan S0 (0.1V)signal5:1antennacoupledtoabout3.875mV.

Consideringmodernreceiversshootfor+150dBofgain;itbehoovedmetoreflex.Iwas impressedwithdesignslikeTomPolk ’sMacrohenrydyne(www.tompolk.com ), Robert Bazian ’scircuitson CharlesWenzel 'swebsite( www.techlib.com ),andtheHarknessof TimKilboy . WhatI,unfortunately,foundinmyowndesignswasjusthowcantankeroustransistorscouldbe: especiallyatcutoffandsaturation.Mixingthiswithsensitiveearphonesoftenprovedpainful.Ilike theHarknessmediumMutriodereceiver;although,IwantedtodoawaywithboththeAFandRF transformers.Ironicallythedesignbelow,aftertryinghundreds,israthersimple.Isnotitalways thatway?Thesimplecircuitthatasphyxiatedthe1ADmonsteralsoeludeddetectionfor50years.

4. HELLENEDYNE CONFIGURATION TheHellenedynedesignusesthetriodeasa cathodefollower(commonplate)atRF andas a groundedgridatAF .ItiscommonknowledgeamongstenthusiaststhathighMutubes makepoorregenerativereceivers.However,thisismostlytruebecauseweareusingthetubesin plateloadedconfiguration.Theprimarypurposeoftheregenerativestageoftheradioistoboost currentsothattheticklerandcanbepowered.Cathodefollowershaveinputimpedances of 500Mohms,which protectsthetank’sQ .VoltagegainonthehighMutubeisreducedtoabout unity(one).Thisbufferingcoupledwiththenoninvertingoutputmakeforasmoothregeneration. Theoutputimpedanceislow,currentgainishighandnearlywithoutdistortion.Afterrectification theaudioentersthetubeingroundedgridconfiguration.Inputimpedanceislow,outputishigh, whichmatchesthe80kohmearphonessetuporsoundpoweredphonesorpiezos.Outputisvery stable,voltagegainishigh,currentgainisnearunity,andpowergainisagainmedium.Itshould benotedthatmanyolderhighMutubesachievegainbyhavinghighRpandlowGm.Thesetubes cannotsustainthecurrentnecessaryforthissetuptoworkproperly,especiallyatlowplatevolts.

5. HELLENEDYNE CIRCUIT TheHellenedynecircuitryaboveusesa3GK5as cathodefolloweratRF andasa grounded gridamplifieratAF .Thisbuildupusesa3turnantennatap,T1062tankcore(coveringthe31M, 41M,49M,and60Mbands),25footantennawire,1000ohmregenerativecontrol(on/offswitch), 1N34A,3GK5tube,27mHRFchoke,BogenT725transformer,and16ohmKossSparkplug earphones(rated112dBSPL/mW).Yes,thetubeisdrawninvertedandpin6istheinternalshield aroundtheframegridposts.The3GK5tubeglows,runshot,andtakes~ 15seconds forwarmup. Regenerationisslowlyaddeduntilbackground“hiss”isheard.Lowerpotvaluesworkevenbetter. Therecanbemanycircuitvariations.Thetank/ticklercanbechangedforuseonBCB.On filamentarytubesutilizean RFC .Thepotentiometerandassociatedcapacitorcanbereplacedwith anairvariablecapacitor;however,thismightalterfrequency.Othercanbeusedincluding thermionic ones,possiblyenclosedinthesametube.TheRFchokeisreplaceablewitha“dualRC” network.Thelowsensitivity16ohmphonescanbereplacedwithsoundpoweredelements.This circuitcanberunathigherplatevoltagesbut Idonotrecommendanythingover45volts asthis canbedangerousandisunnecessary.Otherworkabletubesinclude:2GK5,4GK5,6GK5,6FQ5A, etc.Triodestrappedpentodescanbeusedbutatlowplatevoltagetheyhave no advantage inmy circuit.The$40USlegendary 7788 at70Vputsoutonly50%thepowerofa3GK5inthisdesign.
