Each student will become experts on one of the planets and then share what they have learnt with other students. Divide the class into 8 groups. Each group will be assigned a different planet Form groups from our solar system and become an expert on that planet. Each group will need to decide how they will collect and communicate the information they find during their research. Research Each group will respond to the following questions to become experts on their assigned planet: • What is the name of the planet? How was it named? • When was the planet discovered? • How big is the planet? • Where is the planet in the solar system? Draw a diagram. • How far away is the planet from the Sun? • What does it look like? Describe the surface of the planet and find pictures that illustrate these features. Use words from your class glossary when describing the planet. • What important discoveries have been made about the planet? List any missions. Share One student from each of the expert groups will form a new group to share the information they have collected. Students will make sure there is one expert from each group at their table. Students will share the information they have collected and learn from one another about each of the planets. Reflect Students will reflect on the activity by responding to one or more of the following questions: • What did you enjoy about this investigation? • What did you find surprising? • What would you do differently next time?     AMS, YOUR FUTURE E R DRE , OUR CHALLENG YOU News Round Up Issue Feb 14 www.blaconhighschool.net Balloon Release Parent and local resident, Lee Challinor, organised a balloon release from all the local schools to raise more money to pay for defibrillators in our local schools. Blacon High School hosted this event which was supported by SADS UK. The rain finally stopped long enough for pupils to release their balloons at around 2.15pm and the high winds did the rest! One lucky winner will receive a prize of £100 for the balloon name tag that travelled furthest. This one event has raised over £2,000 - now all the schools in Blacon will have defibrillators on site. Mr Challinor is continuing to raise more funds so that all key sites in Blacon have this potentially life-saving equipment. W hat makes me Smile? Blacon schools took part in a Short Story and Poetry Competition sponsored by Smile Fostering and Adoption Services at Cheshire West and Chester Council. Groups of students worked on their stories/poems over a number of weeks and the winning entries have been included in a glossy brochure produced by the council. The Awards Evening took place on Tuesday, 11 February in our school hall. The prize winners and their families were joined by the Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Jill Houlbrook, the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Rachel Walker and Cllr Reggie Jones with Luke Bailey (actor from Casualty and Waterloo Road) making the presentations. We are delighted that Bethany Irvine won the Key Stage 3 award with Jake Sconce as runner up.

After graduating from 8 Signal Regiment as a Telecommunication Operator (Radio Relay) he was sent to 1 (United Kingdom) Armoured Division Headquarters and Signal Regiment (Herford). During this posting he was employed as a crewman and then detachment commander on various Ptarmigan detachments within 201 Signal Squadron. In 1994 he completed his first operational tour in West Belfast, Northern Ireland and was promoted to Lance Corporal. In 1995 he saw operational experience under the IFOR banner in Bosnia and Former Republic of Yugoslavia as a Site Commander on a remote communications site. Successfully completing the Royal Signals Corporals Course and Class One in trade he was posted to 3 (United Kingdom) Armoured Division Headquarters and Signal Regiment as a detachment commander within 222 Signal Squadron. An eight month deployment to BATUS in Canada saw him promoted to Corporal and subsequently moving to 7 Armoured Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron (207) in Hohne, Germany. Whilst serving with 207 he was employed as the Troop Corporal and an armoured Radio Relay Detachment Commander for Bravo Troop. During this tour he enjoyed two successful deployments to Kosovo to provide communications in support of KFOR and successfully completed the All Arms Skill at Arms Course.

Like before, the W’ford Chamber and FNB are teaming up with the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) to bring the community a weekend to remember with vendors, food trucks, live entertainment, and cash prizes! The event will be held at a new location this year, outside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. On April 19th and 20th, bring the family over to enjoy a fun-filled weekend of entertainment as barbeque teams clash for this year’s Provided bragging rights. But that’s not the only contest going on during Pork-A- WOCS students from the Clinton campus qualified for the Association of Christian Schools International Palooza. Along with the main turn-ins of Brisket, Pork (ACSI) Area Math Olympics being held February 22.
