A Visit with our Sister Malcolm Fitz-Earle of the Izu-Shi Friendship Society gave a presentation on the Society’s recent visit to Nelson’s sister city in Japan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Nelson’s sister-city relationship with Izu-shi. The multi-generational delegation explored connections with retiree groups, students, the arts community, business groups and local food growers and producers. The relationship focuses on the promotion of peace and economic, cultural and educational exchanges.

Electricity on the Ice—new Zamboni The RDCK will purchase an electric Zamboni for the Nelson and District Community Complex. The unit, which costs $165,950 (plus tax) will be the first of its kind used in the Kootenays. The RDCK will also install a meter in the complex to track the cost of charging the Zamboni.

Riondel to Keep on Curling The RDCK will enter into a 10-year lease agreement with the Riondel Curling Club for use of the curling rink for the period June 15, 2017 to July 31, 2027. The RDCK previously has a five-year agreement with the Club.

Get Golden earlier in Creston The Golden Guest admission/membership eligibility at the Creston and District Community Complex will drop from 85 years to 80 years as of July 1, 2017.

The RDCK Community Services Department will work with staff and commissions of the three recreation complexes to complete a review of the admissions/memberships fees and categories and amend and align the service offerings in 2017.

SK8 Park in Motion The RDCK will borrow up to $1,000,000 for the first phase of the Skatepark upgrade project at the Creston and District Community Complex. The RDCK will also apply for $3.2 million Strategic Priorities Fund grant for the project.

Bus to Creston Community Complex The Creston bus will service the community complex starting in 2018, making it easier for residents to access the many services offered.

Big Collaboration equals Big Savings The RDCK joined a collaboration of other local governments to procure software to replace the out-of- date system used in our recreation facilities. Thanks to the hard work of RDCK staff and the strength of the collaborative, the RDCK will see a 50% decrease in the cost to purchase the program.

Sunshine Bay Park Wharf to get Repairs The RDCK will grant $8,000 to the West Arm Outdoors Club to repair the wharf at Sunshine Bay Regional Park.

Water Woes in Ymir The RDCK will send a letter on behalf of the RDCK Board and the users of the RDCK-owned and operated Ymir Water System to the Minister and Deputy Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and to BC Timber Sales to request that the Province cease its preparation of operating plans for the Quartz Creek area and watershed that feeds the Ymir Water System due to the impact that this operation will have on the very sensitive volume and quality of the water that is used by Ymir residents.

Going for Grants The RDCK will submit an application to the BC Rural Dividend Program to further the development of the Trans Canada Trail connection between Morning Mountain Regional Park and the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail via Cottonwood Lake Regional Park. The RDCK has partnered with the Nelson Cycling Club for the project and is grateful to the hard work and dedication of the group to improve our trail system.

It will also apply to the Rural Dividend program on behalf of the Area A Economic Development Commission for $100,000 in funding to develop enhanced educational programming together with local partners.

The RDCK will also submit an application to the Rural Dividend Fund on behalf of the Castlegar Parks and Trails Society for the Merry Creek Trail Project in Electoral Area J.

The RDCK is supporting the Village of New Denver’s application to the Strategic Priorities Fund for grant money for capital upgrades to the Denver Siding water system. Additionally, It will support the Ootischenia Improvement District’s application to the Strategic Priorities Fund.

Arrow Award The Board has awarded the Arrow Creek Watermain Replacement and System Improvements (Phase 5) construction and post construction services to WSP Canada Inc.
