    A Directory of Wetlands in New Zealand NELSON/MARLBOROUGH CONSERVANCY Farewell Spit (39) Location: 40o32'S, 172o50'E. At the northern extremity of Golden Bay and the northwestern extremity of South Island, 38 km from the town of Takaka, Tasman District. Area: 11,388 ha (land area c.1,961 ha; inter-tidal zone c.9,427 ha). Altitude: Sea level to 3 m. - 155 - A Directory of Wetlands in New Zealand Overview: Farewell Spit is a classic recurved spit, approximately 30 km long, composed predominantly of uniform quartz sand derived from rivers draining westwards and transported northward by the westland current. The north is exposed to the Tasman Sea, but the south has extensive tidal mudflats. These provide feeding areas for large numbers of waterfowl. Some 95 species were recorded on the spit in March 1974, and more than 83 species of wetland birds are regularly recorded at the spit. The sand dunes provide habitat for a diverse and unusual plant community. Farewell Spit was listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on 13 August 1976. Physical features: Farewell Spit is a classic recurved spit. The material forming the spit is derived from erosion of the Southern Alps and West Coast sea cliffs, transported northwards by a long-shore current. Since the estimated origin of the spit 6,500 years ago, an estimated 2.2 million cubic metres of sand have been deposited per annum. Wind transports more surface sand towards Golden Bay, although the majority of sand lies below the mean low water mark.

MARINE PLACE – Hautai Marine Reserve: South Westland A team of four staff carried out an intertidal survey within Hautai Marine Reserve during the last week of March. A lot of good information and data was gathered with a view to establishing a baseline for future and on-going monitoring. Flyovers to check for illegal fishing by the Royal NZ Air Force and other aircraft that regularly fly in the area have been arranged for the Kahurangi and Punakaiki Marine Reserves. MONITORING The West Coast monitoring team have completed most of the planned field work for the season. Data is now been analysed and all projects will be reported on during the next couple of months. DOCDM-3015153 - Status Report May 2017 1 KARAMEA PLACE Planning Resource Consents received, Concessions/Permissions, Management Plans A one-off concession was processed for a sporting event in the Oparara Basin. District comments were completed for helicopter landings. Visitor Management Summer Heaphy hut wardens contract ended 21st of April. Mackay Hill gravelling completed finishing the Heaphy track upgrade. However, January storm damage meant more work around the coastal track is underway to fix track damages including re-routing the track inland to keep away from wave surges on south Heaphy beach.

Premature opening-out of schrunds and crevasses, however, added to the diffi culty of the greater climbs; a great advance was made in the use of crampons. Mt. Cook was ascended three times by th e Linda route : On December 19, 1927, by three guides- Vic Williams, A1f Brustad, J ack Pope-in 19 hours. This party established a record by being absent from the Hermitage only three days. On J anuary 4, 1928, by Mr. Eric Lewis, Vic Williams, and J ack Pope. On J anuary 12, 1928, by Mr. R. Aubin and J ack Pope . The low peak of Mt. Cook was also ascended , after long neglect, by Mr. B. Murray and Vic Williams. Two ascents were made of the Minarets and Footstool, and one each of Malte Brun, Hamilton, and Darby. Professor and Mrs. Algie, with A1f Brustad and K. Grinling, made a very successful expedition up the Murchison Valley. They made the first ascent of Bell Peak (9250 ft.) and of two smaller unnamed peaks to th e north of it, and the second ascent of th e two­ peaked Mt. Hutton (9297 ft.). The first winter ascent of Elie de Beaumont (10,200 ft.) was made on September 13, 1928, by Mr.H . Coxhead and J ack Pope ; they used skis to Lendenfeld Saddle and crampons from th ere to th e summit.

    Reis - Home and Away on Stewart Island HOME AND AWAY Constructions of place on Stewart Island ARIANNE CARVALHEDO REIS Southern Cross University <[email protected]> Abstract Located south of the South Island of New Zealand, separated by Foveaux Strait, Stewart Island is the southern-most of New Zealand’s three main islands. Stewart Island's magnificent landscapes and wildlife provide excellent opportunities for hiking and hunting. The nature of these experiences, however, is quite distinct from one another. The vast majority of hikers visiting the island are international tourists and first- time visitors, while most hunters are New Zealanders, who have been visiting the island for several years. This difference in background facilitates experiences of place that are distinct from one another, and the performances of these visitors are highly modulated by how place is constructed by themselves and by others with whom they share their experiences. This article explores these constructions of place and the production of a space that allows for these distinct experiences to occur simultaneously and in the same location. It investigates the roles a remote island destination plays in the experience of visitors/tourists, and how these roles are constructed and subsequently performed.     Appendix 1 A NEW ZEALAND WILDERNESS PHILOSOPHY Section A Wilderness: New Zealand’s Heritage Each of us has our own concept of wilderness which is important to us. What is wilderness? Wilderness is part of New Zealand’s heritage. As a land the New Zealand ‘region’ has been isolated from the other continents for 80 million years—at the close of the age of reptiles. During this long period a natural landscape that is distinctively New Zealand in character has evolved. Man has been an element in that landscape for only 1000 years or so. Yet, in that comparatively short period, man has changed the New Zealand landscape at a rate rarely exceeded in other parts of the world. Since the coming of the Polynesian the primeval forest cover has been reduced from approximately 80 percent of the land to only 23 percent—and most of that remaining forest is confined to the West Coast of the South Island and more mountainous areas. Nature needs time for growing and sleeping, free from automobile fumes and massive tractors, away from the cacophony of snowmobiles and trail bikes. There are plenty of tamed wonders for all to goggle at through vehicle windows—we must also retain our wilderness areas where nature can develop in its own calm way and where only those humans who are prepared to walk and sweat a little qualify to go.
