THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Stieg Larsson | 608 pages | 09 Jul 2009 | Quercus Publishing | 9781906694180 | English | London, United Kingdom The Girl Who Played with Fire () - IMDb She buys a new apartment with the money she stole from a corrupt businessman and sells half of it to Miriam Wu, a former sex partner, for only one kronor in exchange for Miriam promising to forward all her mail. Lisbeth returns to Milton Security, the cyber security firm where she works. Her boss, Dragan Armansky, scolds her for leaving her job without notice and tells her that Holger Palmgren, who was her legal guardian before Bjurman, is still alive. Lisbeth, who believed Palmgren had died of a stroke, is overjoyed at the news and goes to visit him at the rehabilitation center where he lives. Lisbeth sees the blond man meeting with Bjurman several months later and suspects that he may be up to no good. Mikhail Blomkvist, an investigative reporter and publisher of the Millennium magazine in Stockholm, is covering a story on corrupt public officials who are involved in an underground sex trafficking ring. He has not heard from Lisbeth in a long time. Dag Svensson, a young journalist who wrote his graduate thesis on sex trafficking, offers to help write the article. However, she still does not contact Blomkvist. Lisbeth appears to be the prime suspect since her fingerprints are found on the murder weapon. The police make a call to Bjurman, since the gun found at the scene is registered to him. They find him dead, presumably murdered with the same gun used to kill Dag and Mia. Blomkvist and Erika Berger, the editor-in-chief of Millennium magazine, decide to comb through their research on the sex trafficking article for potential evidence linking the article to the murders. Blomkvist suspects that Lisbeth may be hacking into his computer files, and leaves her a message on his computer offering to help. She replies that he should look for information on Zala. Blomkvist takes her advice and questions Gunnar Bjorck, a corrupt police officer involved in the sex ring, on what he knows about the man named Zala. Bjorck offers to tell Blomkvist everything he knows in exchange for his name being excluded from the article. Roberto knocks the giant out with a plank of wood. The man later burns the warehouse to the ground to destroy evidence. Blomkvist finds out from Bjorck that Zala is a Russian defector living under protection of the Swedish secret police, and that he is a sex trafficker. He also discovers the identity and address of the giant blond man, who is called Ronald Niedermann. Zalachenko and Niedermann capture Lisbeth and hold her hostage at their farm. When she was thirteen, Lisbeth tried to set her father on fire with a milk carton full of gasoline to stop him from beating her mother. He survived, but had to have his leg amputated. Zalachenko shoots Lisbeth several times, and he and Niedermann bury her in a makeshift grave. Larssen himself is pretty guilty of plundering many genre tropes and plot staples. Astonishingly, for this he seems to draw on Star Wars , and particularly the third act revelations in The Empire Strikes Back. Really, one thing The Girl Who Played With Fire lacks is a self-contained narrative arc; something to give the film its own satisfactory ending. The degrees of abuse she undergoes, particularly, remind me in places of the Seventies horror exploitation cycle. Axes are involved. It feels like a TV film, and while at its heart these books are largely police procedurals, they lack the qualities of, say, Prime Suspect. Sign in. Log into your account. Forgot your password? Edit Did You Know? Trivia Boxer Paolo Roberto is featured as a character in the original novel and plays himself in the movie. This is quite possibly only the fourth time in film and literature that this has happened. Previously, Richard Kiley was the tour guide voice in the movie Jurassic Park , having been identified as such in Michael Crichton 's novel. Lady Chablis played herself in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil after being a character in the original non-fiction book by John Berendt. Finnish painter Kimmo Kaivanto played himself in Farewell, Mr. Goofs The Mac Book laptops in the movie are clearly not powered as the Apple logo on the reverse side of the screen normally glows brightly when switched on. After Blomkvist leaves information that he has discovered about the case on his computer for Salander to hack into and read, she leaves a message to him saying, "Thank you for being my friend. A disguised Salander visits Miriam in hospital to apologize for getting her involved. Without giving anything away, Salander confirms the police sketch of Niedermann with Miriam and then disappears. Knowing now that he is Salander's friend, Miriam calls Blomkvist to the hospital to give him keys that Lisbeth dropped during her visit. Noticing that one of them is for a post office box, Blomkvist is able to access and read Salander's mail and locate her apartment. Meanwhile, Salander continues her efforts to find Niedermann by patiently staking out his post office box. She eventually sees someone retrieve his mail and follows him to a small house near Gosseberga. Reading the material in Lisbeth's apartment, Blomkvist finds the video of Bjurman raping Salander. In the offices of Millennium magazine, Paolo explains that he tracked down Niedermann and learned that he has congenital analgesia which makes him unable to feel pain. They trace Niedermann to a company owned by "Karl Axel Bodin. Salander crosses the grounds and enters the Gosseberga house, but Niedermann has been alerted by motion detectors and knocks her out. She awakens to see her father, Alexander "Zala" Zalachenko, an old man who walks with a stick and is heavily scarred by the burns that she inflicted as a child. He dismisses her mother as a whore and belittles her rape at the hands of Bjurman. He reveals that Niedermann is her half-brother and that Niedermann killed Bjurman to prevent him from revealing any of Zalachenko's secrets. They lead Lisbeth to a shallow grave in the woods. She tells him that the police will find him soon and all that he has said has been published online through her hidden cellphone. Seeing through her bluff, he shoots Lisbeth several times as she attempts to escape and buries her alive. Salander digs her way out using her cigarette case. Hidden in the woodshed, she surprises Zalachenko sticking an axe into his leg. She then keeps Niedermann at bay with Zalachenko's gun as Blomkvist comes coasting up the driveway. Ambulances and police arrive to take away Salander and Zalachenko who are both very badly injured. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, although some noted it a step down from its predecessor. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gives the film three and a half out of four stars, describing the film as a step down from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo , but only because the first film was so "fresh and unexpected". Scott of The New York Times praises Rapace's performance, stating, "tiny and agile, her steely rage showing now and then the tiniest crack of vulnerability, belongs to another dimension altogether. She makes this movie good enough, but also makes you wish it were much better. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune writes that the film is much the same as its predecessor, despite the new director Daniel Alfredson and screenwriter Jonas Frykberg , and is likely to please those who enjoyed the first film. He observes that Rapace remains the chief asset of the series, and that she works well with Michael Nyqvist , who he likens to a more sincere, Swedish version of Larry Hagman. He writes further that even though Rapace and Nyqvist "could not be better" in their roles, the film should acknowledge the middle ground between the righteous heroes and the evil villains in order to work better as cinematic pulp fiction.
